If only people of all political persuasions would read this book, maybe America could be made better. I have never seen such a wonderful film of the race itself. It was because they had learned, somehow, to deal with adversity and they dealt with it that day!

Very entertaining, but also extremely strange. I think the premise of the book is all wrong. If you really look at it, the story would’ve been if the Italians beat the US in the Olympics. The United States was absolutely dominant. We never lost the gold medal in eights from 1920 to 1960. If the University of Washington would’ve lost the trials in the United States, one of our other boats would’ve won the gold medal. In fact, we probably had four boats that would’ve won the gold medal. So it’s really no big deal. The story here is if the Italians beat us in the gold medal race.

My point is the United States was absolutely dominant in eight man shells. We won the gold medal from 1920 to 1960, uninterrupted. The Italians had a really good crew that year. Older guys. Very big very strong. We only beat them by a few feet. The bigger story would’ve been if the Italians upset the mighty Americans. That’s the story. The United States probably had four crew at home that would’ve won that gold medal. I don’t see the big deal about the university of Washington winning the medal. There were a lot of American crews that would’ve won that gold medal. We were absolutely dominant for 40 years. Go look it up.
