I love joey switching languages. Any person who speaks more than 1 language probably has experienced this, it might seem pretentious to other people, but it's just a bug in brain and whenever there is an environment with 2 languages you know are mingled (language classes for example) you keep speaking with the wrong language to people, completely subconsciously.

8:00 for those who learn Japanese I need to say that Joey’s explanation of keigo is a bit wrong. We don’t really change the verb of a sentence depending on who exactly we’re talking to - to both the emperor and a boss we say these nuts omeshiagari kudasai (お召し上がりください). Also, I’d say otabe kudasai (お食べください) is grammatically correct but unnatural, I personally have never said it unless ironically and definitely not to my boss. So basically, while teineigo (丁寧語) is simply a polite way of saying stuff, kenjogo (謙譲語) and sonkeigo (尊敬語) convey respect for sb in particular. The difference between these two lies in who’s the subject of a sentence - ‘I’ the speaker or someone like the emperor/boss. To say ‘I read your email’ to a boss respectfully is to speak kenjogo, and the verb is gonna be 拝読する (ーした in the past tense). ‘Kenjo’ means modesty in Japanese, so by using the verb I’m lowering my position and therefore showing respect. Whereas if I’m just a third person saying ‘the boss read someone’s email’ (with the emphasis on respect for the boss), I use a ‘sonkeigo’ verb お読みになる (-なった). I know it’s fucking complicated!
@void_sum3 жыл бұрын
I imagine Joey knows how to use keigo correctly, but for some reason when he's explaining some concepts to an audience he goes all over the place, like he's trying super hard to make people think "wow, Japanese is such a whacky weird language!" lol. If you want a lot more examples of this just look up his "Japanese class" stream (I think someone reuploaded it on KZbin), Joey just jumps from one thing to the next, and to the next, making things seem way worse than they actually are.

Yeah, the epitome of drip. BUT, it's only the chapter pages, anime openings/endings and other stuff. In the actual manga and show, they do what the boys were memeing on, they always wear the same thing. @Shigure99343 жыл бұрын
What do you meant by that? That one is superior to another? If that was your intention I have to disagree my friend, you definitely don't need a classroom nor a teacher to learn Japanese or any language, you just need to spend time with the language constantly everyday and you'll get good faster than anyone doing classes 2 times a week, just gotta keep at it

I have higher comprehension than Connor, and I'm self-taught. The only reason why Connor is better than Garnt is because he's more consistent, which is a plus side for classes. The downside for classes is that you stay the same pace as everyone else even if you want to go further.

N1 will have a lot of questions that FEEL really hard even for a native speaker, but because the passing mark is 55% I doubt any high school educated native speaker would have a hard time scraping by. You only need to do a little better than narrowing each question down to a 50/50. Coincidentally, this 55% passing mark is also why the test is kind of worthless as a language measure (it encourages memorizing a wide net of information rather than focusing on proficiency and fluency) and the Japanese government is (slowly) trying to reform testing to be more in line with European language testing standards... but the JLPT is the best that companies have so an N2 or N1 is still really useful if you're applying for visa work.
@RyuKatolikeseaweed3 жыл бұрын
It tests a lot of things a native wouldn't learn. I'm Japanese and I wouldn't know the differences between different types of keigo, I just kinda do it by instinct/what I know to be used in each scenario. I don't know what category of keigo I'm using; you never have to learn that in school. Most people learn it through family/on the job. The other stuff on the test should be easy for a native though, so a middle/high schooler should pass with no issues.
@RyuKatolikeseaweed3 жыл бұрын
Also no one would ever say お食べください. I've never heard that in my entire life and so I laughed when Joey said it.
@TheJSStraussMr3 жыл бұрын
But then why is it that the passing rates for N1 are still fairly low? Genuine question. They are well below 50% and usually around the 30% mark. If you compare it to the Cambridge English C2 Proficiency test for example, that one has a passing rate above 70%. Sources: Wikipedia 'JLPT' Google 'cambridge english test passing rates' (I can't give links because KZbin will delete my comment.)

Fun fact related to the whole "Jesus" pronunciation thing. The name "Jesus" actually has the same root as the name "Joshua", this being the Hebrew name "Yeshua / Y'shua". The reason we have these two different names, is that "Jesus" went from Hebrew through Greek and Latin and into English; whereas "Joshua" had a more direct path.

43:23 To follow up on Connor's comment: As someone who has learned to write, stroke order is something that 1. differs depending on whether you've received a Chinese or Japanese education. Their orders slightly differ. 2. even native Chinese peeps sometimes disagree on minute details in stroke order: I have no doubt this partially results from #1 Of course, learning the stroke order to be *mostly correct will make you look normal than being fully rogue with it. Learning to write is endeavour nontheless.

When it comes to anime character drip, I always think of Yu Yu Hakusho and Ranma 1/2, and even Sailor Moon (especially the manga) have all these fits that are just so perfect for the pre-bleach era of anime fashion, and they definitely kept up with mulitple closets worth of casual wear throughout their runs, that deserves RESPECT.

The way Joey wrote 女 follows a generally accepted principle of writing in Japanese: left to right, top to bottom. It didn't come from a place of "I prefer this". Rather it came from following principles. For people interested in calligraphy, following the stroke order the way Joey explained (く then / then ー) allows for a fluid brush flourish. Otherwise, it's going to be a disjointed stroke (the way Joey originally wrote it in).
