We are finally getting around to show off "The Brake Trick" that Bill of The Old Man's Garage let out of the bag a few weeks back, and it's nothing miraculous but we always try to be as honest as we can so here it is. At least most of it. Fortunately, we happen to have our customers LS swapped S10 in the shop for brake / front suspension / steering work so it's a prime candidate to use.
As you'll see in this video none of what we are doing is rocket surgery, it's just simple maintenance and proper setup. As good as it gets in this video we have still more "bits" we are going to do to make it even better. Decreased rolling resistance is a good thing and we're going to make this thing as good as we can!
Huge thanks as always to all our subscribers, followers, fans, and customers who have made our business successful and gotten our channel to where it is today. Special thanks to the SRC / Street Racing Channel / SRC Garage / Old Man's Garage / Junkyard Digs folks for showing such amazing support for us over the past several months. Without all of you we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are today. We hope you enjoy this one!

The most missed part of brake jobs for sure. Thank you for all you do to help us backyard mechanics and the rest learn a few things. It’s appreciated.

Great tips. I'm interested to see if the oil will work. Possibly may have to up grade the rear seal.

Been using that same permatex grease on brakes since I started installing transmissions 15 years ago at 16. Attention to detail is key! Wheels on my old Impala spin like that. Thanks for keeping the OMG and SRC cars running straight to keep those guys safe!

Thanks Rich. This makes me realize just how bad the drag is on the front brakes of my C10. I’ll use these tips and see if I can reduce it.

The cap will need to “ vent “ or it will expand and push the seal out or leak. That’s why they have a small vent hole in 18 wheeler trailer axles

Look into bearing spacers. They are used a lot in dirt track racing. Aloes you to properly preload the wheel bearings and still keep the drag low.

Nice Rich 👍 Even with a seal I'd be paranoid about the gear oil flinging around and contaminating the pads. The results are going to be interesting for sure.

GM introduced "low drag" calipers in the early 80's by adding a taper to the square cut piston seal. And the seal groove in the caliper may be cut with a taper as well (my memory).

@@LucoreAuto So a little gear oil won't hurt? With the grease of course. I'm anxious for part 2 to see how the gear oil works out. Have you ever thought about either kind of undersizing the pins or oversizing the holes to reduce drag. I'm not talking like a bunch.

A little gear oil won't hurt, it will mix with the bearing grease after a drive or two. Semis run flooded front bearings with straight gear oil. I would guess it provides better heat transfer.

@@richardlucore6813 I've done that with a lot of full float rear bearings. Never thought about it on the front...also the wire wheel on the shop's bench grinder has been my friend over the years, brake pin cleaning etc. Know you aren't supposed to do that but better clean if you can't replace!

I would imagine bending those tabs would also help keep pads from scraping and dragging. My rear disc conversion squeaks once warmed up. I thought it was drum prop valve dragging the rears but switched to disc/disc valve and there has been no change

Great low buck tips and tricks Rich . I’m upgrading my 88 S10 . I’ve installed a 4.8 LS with an eBay GT45 turbo, Turbo 400 with a Jegs converter . Out back a Ford 8.8 . I’m thinking bigger brakes up front , any low buck suggestions ? . Thanks , still loving your videos.

@@mikejohns3104 thanks. I’d like to keep my drop spindles and if I purchase drop spindles for an 98 then there goes the low buck angle. I know of a way to use Camaro/CTSV etc brakes but some machining is in order. UMI offer a bracket to achieve this but some machining is still in order.

I've got a 76 Nova with the 11" disc and non-low drag stock calipers. Short of swapping to wilwoods, got anr tricks that would lower the drag on them? All new parts, tires will rotate about 3/4s of a turn before stopping. Thanks.

About to repack my 4cyl fox brakes, thanks for the tips! How did the gear oil do on the bearing? I know there are special low drag greases out there, do you recommend a certain brand grease that's budget and low drag?

Cool Video.. I have to ask, if you were going to bleed brakes (disc on all 4 corners) by yourself, how would you recommend doing it? And are there any tools you would suggest, to make it easier?

You be surprised how bad of a job guys do, when doing brake jobs. Guys hammering new pads in the bracket cause they’re too lazy to clean the rust out of the brackets.
