I know people were off put that Samson is a 4-8-4 in the year 1895 but put that off the side because he works in this film because he establishes the future and what future locomotives supposed to look like. If that said the concept of a Northern in the 1890s sounds actually really freaking cool!

The engine Samson was based on was a nkp Berkshire but he is NOT a Berkshire because he has a 4-8-4 wheelbase

I think he was based off a up steam engine the logo on his tender looks like a Union Pacific logo obviously the logo is out of date but he was based off some loco

According to concept art he was based on the Nickel Plate Road S2 Berkshire, which is the same thing as the as 1225 in real life. Of course he was made into a 4-8-4

pm 1225 is a n-1 berkshire and s-2 is nkp 765 so samson is the prototype of the nkp s-2

Side note, just to clarify, cuz I've seen at least one person in these comments confused, Samson is a 4-8-4, aka the Northern Type (or Niagra if you prefer the New York Central term, or Heavy Mountain if you prefer the Santa Fe terminology)
