People with short memories tend to forget the Chiefs went through a lot of adversity during that long losing sequence and have come out the other side stronger for it. They had to fast track and blood younger guys like Taukei'aho, Tupou Vaa'i, Aidan Ross now they're established players. This has been a great comeback from a team that Gatland almost destroyed their self confidence and belief with his Northern Hemisphere style coaching. Well done Clayton McMillan and team you deserve all the praise but the reality is nothings won yet. Blues went on a mighty winning streak last season and got struck down when it mattered, no one's writing the Crusaders off just yet.
@Tuhoeterra Жыл бұрын
That’s a bit unfair to Gatland the chiefs were going great guns at the start of the 2020 season. We fell into a slump with the SR Aotearoa competition though.
@johndiamond6931 Жыл бұрын
@@TuhoeterraI think under Gatland the Chiefs went backwards. Under McMillan they've improved immensely and have been constantly good with McMillan making the Aotearoa final in 2021 but then fell away whenever Gatland came back. It's true the first 3 or 4 games in 2020 Chiefs looked good early in the competition but Blues also did well especially in South Africa, while Crusaders had their usual slow start to the season. However it's hard to judge a team in the first few rounds and the eventual winners Crusaders did what they always do. But this is definitely a different Chiefs team from what was under Gatland, many of the same players but coached in way where they've become much more successful. And the recruitment especially this year by Clayton McMillan and his team has been great too. There's quality back up in every position.

@johndiamond6931 Жыл бұрын
I would have thought the Rugby Championship would be used to build on the new combinations in the midfield since Jordie moved to 12. And to settle on the back three and loose forward combinations. Foster indicated that they've already penciled in their first five but at tge same time also said it could change 😆 the guy struggles to make up his mind lol. But it will likely be Mounga and either BB or Dmac on the bench.
@Wilkinson7 Жыл бұрын
I think Foster should do both. Due to Foster's own meddling the squad doesn't realy have settled combinations. We need all our combinations to get as much game time together as possible. On the other end, there are 2,3 players going well in S. R that II would like to see if they can translate their form into Test Level and the Rugby Championship is the best platform because you're not going to try new combinations at a World Cup. So, yes.. Some game time for D Mac at first five so we can see how he plays. Also I think Mounga has forced us to consider another first five because he hasn't realy replicated his excellent S. R form into Test rugby. Narawa, the Chiefs Winger is someone I would also like to see given a chance in the Rugby Championship

The difference between Chiefs and crusaders at moment is Richie got no support from the back 3. Past seasons he had game breakers like Sevu and Jordan who opened up defenses. Now all the responsibility falls on Richie to create play.Burke aint a full back who can create play. Damien got two guys Stevenson and Narawa who played fullback most of their cariers and got some sting from the back. I thought the calls were against the saders in first half. Jacobson were lucky for not been give a card for his shoulder to the head of Gardner near the end of first 40.
@Trajan2401 Жыл бұрын
That supports the theory that he only looked good in the past because the Crusaders were the best side with the best players would he look so good if he was in an average side like the Highlanders?
@richardmatatahi4563 Жыл бұрын
Well I think that is the difference between Damian & Richie, they have options (Chiefs) of playing Damian at fullback or 10, he has shown he can spark an attack from anywhere, and not glued to the number 10 position and shifting Stevenson to wing where he's also good in that position. I felt Richie went missing again in the match. Damian still knows how to spot and hit a gap, always been his natural game. But didn't have it all his own way in the 1st half, with a couple of charge downs and a missed tackle that led to a fired up Crusaders 1st try but, saved a try in the corner just before half time. "" 2nd half they sorted themselves out, and got the win, something they seem to be making a habit off. I'm not counting the Crusaders out, when there is only 4 points separating 2nd & 5th place Crusaders, but that's now in the hands of the Blue's & Hurricane's who would want to cement their spot in the top 4.

@@Olivierstreet TJs replacement at the Canes has been playign well I would put him as well with those 3 over TJ.
@johndiamond6931 Жыл бұрын
@@Olivierstreet thought Webber still throws too many low passes throughput a game, needs to work on that. Even Snith sometimes is afraid to get in a ruck when his forwards aren't at the breakdown and he's standing right there with the ball at his feet but lets the opposition win it. Both have their work ons but I'm glad we have two great young 9s coming through in Ratima and Roigard. Once Xavier Roe comes back from injury that's another who can be added to that list.

Why is JK so obsessed with signing Beaudy on a long term contract to the next world? If we can't find a 10 by then we are screwed..there a few young, promising first five's coming through we would be far better off bringing them on over the next world cup cycle. Beauden will still be valuable as a mentor/senior player over the next couple of years, but other then that his contract would be a waste of money

I think Perofeta is still good potential, Ioane as well. They might try Sullivan at 10 in the future. Brett Cameron, I think, has also shown some of the form that got him an AB cap. Let's not forget that Plummer is a 10 too, I think playing at 12 is good for him and it will probably make him a big and tough 10.
@johndiamond6931 Жыл бұрын
@@OlivierstreetPlummer is good for Auckland but hasn't really been used for Blues at 10. Brett Cameron, Josh Ioane, Dmac, Ruben Love, Zarn Sullivan, Stephen Perofeta and Sam Gilbert whose being wasted at every other position all have potential to be greatc10s. So yes we definitely have the cattle it's just a matter of them getting opportunities now.

Macmillan should have been in the Razor ‘s ABS staff coaching. He is better than Leon McDonald and Jason holland !
@Olivierstreet Жыл бұрын
Holland for sure. I've liked Clayton since he took over that season before Gats returned. I'm sure it all has to do with Razors prior working relationship with all of them, plus Clayton is helming at the Maori team. If he keeps it up, he's sure to get in the mix in the future or maybe after Razor.
@johndiamond6931 Жыл бұрын
It's actually crucial that Clayton stays in Super Rugby to help develop NZ players to become ABs. We need great coaches at that level for that sole reason. I'm glad he's still with the Chiefs, because he will continue to find talent, recruit them and develop them. It's the best thing that has happpened for NZ Rugby now that Razor has left Super in 2024.

Emoni Narawa should sign a massive contract in the uk and then play for Fiji. All blacks will only cap in 1-2 games and not select him again like how they did with Pita Gus.

I would like to know why teams decide to go for penalty goals only a few minutes into the game? My suggestion would be to go for a line out and putting opposition under pressure, especially so early on the game. Why kick and miss when the reward is so much greater for a 7 pointer.

Mt Smart and Rugby union just dnt go together, Mt Smart will always be the home of the warriors, & modern years NZRL, Auckland R.League and O.G Kiwis league will always be Carlaw park . Eden park Kiwis league have struggled there & warriors have never won there why it's Auckland Rugby, NZ rugby, NZ Cricket not league Pasifika Moana 2me should maybe have started at a grassroots stadium like Counties Manukau Rugby have it build some potential revenue to bit by bit renovate counties stadium to become a home for them... People gota remember that P.Moana is still a new franchise and most of Aucklands Rugby union supporters are too engrained Heavily Auckland Blues Supporters.

How? 2 of their disallowed tries were knock ons? And they also scored less points. I thought the team at the end of the game with the most points wins the game? Besides they only looked good in the first half, the 2nd half Chiefs were clearly the better team. Maybe if Jordan was playing he wouldn't have made the same mistakes as Burke. Next time hopefully Jordan will be available.
