I think the reason Bender remains my favorite character is because he's really the only one 'brave enough' to be himself,..and pay the price for it. Everyone else is just hiding in their own way. Bender was a trouble maker because he didn't care about anything. Which was a result of his abuse. Him escaping home for detention just doesn't make any sense.

Love the late Paul Gleason, he plays these "tin can" authoritarians extremely well (IE Die Hard and Trading Places). From what I've read Gleason was totally opposite these characters, he even helped coach and mentor the child actors in "the Breakfast Club" RIP Paul..
