The Breguet Type XX ref. 3800 is Dead. What Comes Next?

Since its launch in 1994, the Breguet Type XX ref. 3800 has been the cornerstone of this iconic French brand's aviation range functionally and aesthetically. However, after a quarter of a century, it has finally been discontinued - an event which has made us all question just what Breguet have in mind for its successor. After all, how do you follow up such an icon? Happy to bought my Type xx just before they discontinued it. I think that it was not so prestigious for the same reasons it Will be popular and hunted by collectionneurs in the future: 39mm, pré swatch group design, lemania mvt, 26 years on the field to strike memories with its unique design.

I think you nailed it: Breguet has to do the same as Blancpain. A modern movement that fits the smaller case of the type XX and then use it as the backbone of different versions referencing the past as the 50 fathoms does.

Great video on a topic I've been thinking about at length. While I hope the Type XX moves in the direction of the 2019 and 2021 Only Watch pieces, I think you're right that it doesn't make sense within the full Type XX / XXI lineup. Whatever they do...I'm wondering what the timeline will be. I hope a new Type XX in coming soon...in 2021 or 2022.

I have a late 90’s Type XX Transatlantique which still gets substantial wrist time. Runs great, looks great and is very durable. It’s one of my favorite watches.

Since three days, we finally know the answer - your instinct proved you right with regards to the One Watch 2019 and the One Watch 2021. And while the design is less triumphant than the previous Type XX, the movement is a huge and positive surprise. But whether there is a market for the new Type 20/ Type XX given the price tag of US$18, has to be seen.

I love the type 20. I would love to see an in-house, or, at the very least, exclusive caliber as well as an automotive-themed model (since early motorists and rallyists wore aviators chronographs all the way through the 70s). The dive watch market is oversatured at the moment in my opinion.

I can see why many would like to see an “in house” but the 582(Q) movement based on the Lemania 1378 or 1372 are not only great movements but built exclusively for Breguet, which is very similar.

Swatch seems to have both Breguet and Blancpain dead in the water and releasing only limited or special edition watches. I hope this changes real soon.

Had a lot of hope, all they needed to do was 38mm and copy the only watch version. The new versions are too big and the date placement looks awful

The type XX family always come close to being a watch I want to own but then ruin it with some overly ornate or retro element. I wish they would ditch the 24hr dial from the XXI for instance and offer it with a half decent movement.

Might be time for a new movement in the type xxi but the lemana will be the collective models as said. The beautiful finish and fly back feature is nice and not seen in many chrono models today along with the 24 hour subdial knowing if you are in am or pm. Models like the B1 and heavy produced modern movements are nice and are work horses but just not finished like a Breguet. The new in-house movement will also push the 13-14k price tag way up, you have to consider who is your target market for these models and not out price your customers,Jeff.

I disagree. Lemania 1350 is a fantastic movement, even though it is not column wheel. Maybe it is not on par with El Primero but it is high end too comparable to Frederic Piguet 1185.

The Type XX/XXI watches never quite appealed to me. Their design was a bit too gilded and ornate for my taste. That’s more or less been Breguet’s design style and you either like it or you don’t. I chose to pass on it.
