Excellent question! I was there when they destroyed the old mass, I did not understand why they chose to ignore the sensibilities and generations of continuity and the beautiful chant and the reverence replace it with the odd stark, stripped thing they delivered, and then for good measure they ripped our the altar rails, and then there was the decline in homiletics that persists to this day, and then they still play games with the words of the prayers. It was an altogether soul sucking attack on the people of God, absolute disrespect for the people and worse, for God Himself. The current pope is lousy, and Benedict should have rode it out and gone out with his boots on even if had to be wheeled around - guess what - YOU DON"T QUIT BEING A FATHER, not for sickness, old age, poverty, NOTHING. Fatherhood is until death -period and that goes for the pope. You can bet Franky will be pulling the levers hard left until his last breath and his likely successor probably will be much worse. So, it's going to be a long wait. IMHO Feel free to disagree entirely.

@@matthewjoseph9897 Of course it is humble, since as I stated anyone can feel free disagree entirely, which you do, thus proving my claim that one can disagree, disagreement is not in debate, however, disagreement and ad hominem are not the same. And that is not IMHO but fact.

Excellent observation, Father. I have a great respect for the Eastern Orthodox Church ☦ and their priests. It is perhaps hard for Catholics ✝️ to acknowledge, but nowadays this Church represents the purest form of Christianity with the least contamination by secular / liberal ideology. Orthodox priests take their faith very seriously (as the name suggests) and as a result the Orthodox faith is growing. There are thousands of new Orthodox churches being built in Romania, including the largest Orthodox cathedral in the world in Bucharest. The faith is growing in Serbia, Russia and even in most surprising places like hyperliberal California (for Irish audience I highly recommend KZbin channels of Father Josiah Trenham - Partistic Nectar Films and channel of Father Moses). The Orthodox liturgy is absolutely beautiful, very God-centred, you can feel the divine presence. I have attended mass in various churches in Ireland and it is not difficult to see why the Catholic church is declining so rapidly whilst the Orthodox church is growing. Mass is being celebrated like a procedure in a very unsincere manner. Homilies are without any deeper spiritual or moral message, focused on ecumenism and social justice rather than teaching of Christ, generic reading from the Bible, sloppy handling of the Eucharist by the priest, people attending in sportswear, shorts or short skirts, Eucharist being dispensed on hand by non-clergy, even worse, by a woman. Mass in Ireland became a tea party and community gathering of old ladies by old ladies. People and especially young people are expecting more than that. Just "being nice" doesn't cut it. In church people seek moral and spiritual guidance and encounter with the transcendent. They expect explanation of the Scriptures by the priest and its translation and implication in the modern world. They expect spiritually uplifting liturgy. The Catholic Church is failing to deliver most of those expectations (thumbs up for the exceptional priests who do). On the other hand the Orthodox Church does not suffer with these issues, definitely not to do an extent that the Catholic church does. There won't be any revival of the Catholic faith in Ireland until the following issues are addressed: 1. Catholic priests must become a much more serious about the faith, about the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist and celebrate Mass as true representation of the Last Supper not as Sunday social gathering. 2. Catholic priests must act like spiritual and moral leaders, offer people guidance and answers for questions that secular society cannot answer. They need to be brave and not afraid to defend Catholic values and to speak up on controversial topics (abortion, divorce, lgbt, consumerism, liberalism, war). The Catholic church needs to realize that it is under attack of the liberal / secular / leftist establishment. It needs to move in this spiritual war from defensive position to offensive position. The Catholic church needs to speak on behalf of and defend other Christians, eg. In Nigeria, Egypt, China, Pakistan and even in the West. The current silence of the church leaders on these topics is deafening! 3. Liturgy need to be improved in terms of dignity, piety and mysticism. Wider participation of the laity in choirs etc. is needed. 4. Catholicism needs to re-invent itself as a life-long commitment and lifestyle, rather than Sunday morning hobby. Catholicism also needs to re-invent itself as a keystone of Irish culture. People in Ireland need to stop being ashamed of their Catholic faith and display religious symbols like crosses, every Catholic home should have a crucifix and a water font. 5. Steps towards reconciliation with the Orthodox Church would be very appreciated. Not embracing liberalism and unlimited ecumenism as is the current trend. 6. Ireland needs to re-create popular Catholic culture and deeper discussion about philosophy, theology and purpose of life. This needs to happen on both levels, within the Catholic infrastructure and as a grassroots popular movement. It is currently almost non-existent. On the other hand, the United States has vibrant culture in terms of books, podcasts, philosophical and religious societies. As an inspiration I recommend following KZbin channels: Fathers of Mercy (USA) - traditional Catholic priests promoting Catholic values Our lady of the Gulf Catholic Church - Fr. Mike O'Connor - similar, great homilies Popular podcasts like Pints with Aquinas, The Catholic Gentlemen, The Catholic Talk Show, The Catholic Man Show, The Fr. Mike Schmitz Catholic Podcast a thousands of others. Although this culture does exist in Ireland (Immaculata Production / Breandan Option is the proof of it), it is very much stagnant and doesn't have a great momentum.

@@matthewjoseph9897 Yes, of course it's not. Corruption is a part of human nature and no institution is immune to it. I am sure that Orthodox church has plenty skeletons hidden in the closet, in Russia it is and has been closely tied with oppressive state power. And it has been corrupt in other countries too. There must be power struggle in the church and bullying in monasteries. But in general as an institution it sticks to doctrine of the early Christian Church and doesn't bent easily to modern ideologies.

@@jirislavicek9954 Not sure your plan would work, you would just be preaching to the choir. If anything, the Church must appeal to young people in modern Ireland, now! Addressing current situations, such as LGBTQ++ etc... there is a long list. Re stating old trench lines and dogma just won't work. The Church has a choice, sink or swim, adapt or disappear. I should say I'm a generally practising Catholic.

Father, the C of E church near me is now St Makarius Romanian and it's bursting at the seams every Sunday morning. The priests are young. The church is quite old and woodwork and pews by Mousy Thompson. The graveyard is old and the congregation take good care of it. The church down the hill St Wilfreds previously Catholic is now leased by Indian Catholic/Christians, this church is absolutely full on Sunday mornings and services sound very happy and joyous. I feel as things are developing we need in England to keep close to our Christian brothers and sistets.

Thanks Fr. Brendan, very good advice. A challenge to all of us retired ancients who have more time than most practicing Catholics. Go to, say 12 Masses (reverently) in 12 different parishes ( not easy to do) and afterwards note the differences between the Celebration of the Holy Mass in the different parishes. If you find two that celebrate the Holy Mass the same you will be blessed. Far too many priests seem to believe that they have to entertain the congregation, rather than offer the Sacrifice of The Holy Mass to Our Eternal Father for every one present and for all parishioners, living and deceased, unless it's offered for a special intention. The personalised offering of Holy Mass needs to stop. If priests show little or no respect for the Eucharist can the congregation be expected to know Who and What we are receiving. Thanks again Fr. for airing this very serious issue, v

So beautifully put, especially your closing thoughts. We are fortunate to live near a monastery that celebrates a very beautiful form of the Mass with incense and Gregorian Chant. The Brothers there have opened their doors to the small number of people who are attracted, including many young families. Such a joyful place! And it shows how we can partake of the old and new, have quiet and reverence mixed together with a spirit of rejoicing and community.

Father Brendan, Your Heart is moving in the right direction. When I was born shortly after the NO came in, my parents had already ditched it and turned back to the TLM, which in those days was underground. Just like the Mass Rocks. Just like the English Recusants. Pope Paul VI had begun a liturgical journey with the NO. My Parents weren't able to travel with him. Clown and Folk Masses and Priests not adhering to the new Missal turned them off the NO. Things improved eventually when Archbishop Lefebvre ordained the first priests of the SSPX. Today we also have the Fraternity of St. Peter and the Institute of Christ the King. Interestingly these groups whose priests exclusively celebrate the TLM have waiting lists for their seminaries. I am not even counting traditional Benedictines who have one community in Ireland. Perhaps the Holy Ghost is trying to tell us something! We have a centuries old ready made Liturgy: the TLM. It is now under persecution by Pope Francis and Cardinal Roche. His Eminence really enjoys implementing Traditiones Custodes. Pope Francis refers to people like me (Traditional Roman Catholics) as BACKWARD. I have an engineering degree from Trinity College in Dublin. How remiss of the university to award a BACKWARD man a first class honours degree!!!! Perhaps I should send my degree parchment to Pope Francis. Problem is, it's in Latin. The Holy Father HATES LATIN. Finally, a quote from my favourite Pope, St. Pius V, OP. It is taken from his Apostolic Constitution Quo Primum. 'We grant and concede in perpetuity that, for the chanting or reading of the Mass in any church whatsoever, this Missal is hereafter to be followed absolutely, without any scruple of conscience or fear of incurring any penalty, judgment, or censure, and may freely and lawfully be used. Nor are superiors, administrators, canons, chaplains, and other secular priests, or religious, of whatever title designated, obliged to celebrate the Mass otherwise than as enjoined by Us. "

Quite correct, to my shame i have a superb latin mass about 45 minutes away but i do not go anywhere near enough. As a man, it strikes deeper than my regular mass / parish, which although fine in many respects seems to not have gravity of what mass is. This is a reminder to go. Support TLM where you can. I do not know why NO is not an exact mirror of Old Rite but in vernacular so all can understand - I thought that was purpose of Vatican 2.

Thank you Father that was wonderful. I.m SW Scotland and attend on a Wednesday when i can an ordinariate rite Mass as it is full of reverence and splendour and right worship. No latin but a little greek. My parish is not spectacular but i m able now to transport myself to Calvary so it doesnt matter so much. But would love a reverent parish 🙏🤫

Father!!! We threw out the baby with the bath water!!! We had such a lovely sacred mass , with beautiful choirs accompanied by the choir to raise our voices to the heavens. What do we have now? A Protestant communal attempt at singing a simple song, and a communal mass that has forgotten the incense, the awakening of the crucifixion!! Oh God forgive us!

You’re bang on as always. The old Latin Mass was both beautiful and mysterious. I don't think that Catholics are required to fully understand what is happening in the Mass. Even in the vernacular, most people still don't get it. We are just required to attend the Mass and witness the sacrifice and, if we are able, to receive the Eucharist. There is plenty of evidence at this stage demonstrating that young people are much more attracted to the old Latin Mass than the Novus Ordo. Unfortunately, some exponents of the Latin Mass have a puritanical view on the matter and, ironically enough, risk communion with the Church over their extreme views. Hopefully (and soon), we will see some elements of the Latin Mass brought back, especially the Liturgy of the Eucharist. There’s nothing wrong with the Novus Ordo as such. It’s just loses its mystery and is often taken for granted because it’s in the everyday vernacular.

We want to play our part. Can you guide us ? Or is they smashing for too much . God Spare you the vision and meet you safe

Novus ordo can be said with latin singing as in the old mass. This is still done at a parish local to me. It was never meant to be abandoned. It is our heritage. The Russian Orthodox church has sadly become an instrument of the state but as with the anglican church what has survived are elements of the beauty of its former glory. Its liturgy is done on an altar behind a big screen. Im not sure if this is transcendant or not. Its an experience to attend such a service but in the final analysis even the most humble novus ordo mass has the real presence and all the icons in the world can't compete with that for me. Never forget irelands mass rocks and the humble masses performed there that eventually fed glogal evangelisation . The real presence is all you need. The trappings of transcendence are no substitute ....

The Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches are truest to the teachings of Christ, the services are solemn and reverent with very little attempt to entertain or the compulsion to have witty humorous sermons full of personal anecdotes. Some PPs have fallen in Ireland but most work very hard in an increasingly hostile environment. However, the problems are higher up the power structure, the Irish Bishops with a few exceptions are cowardly and have a very tenuous belief in anything transcendent, the curia and current papal incumbent are masonic Luciferians and are driving towards a one world church and bow to the power of this world. The future church will be a break away rump who remain truthful to the teachings of Christ, more like the early Church than the faux church of today. Thank you Fr.Kilcoyne.

Excellent observation! The church structure is highly compromised and contaminated with secular / liberal / freemasonic agenda. The higher you go on the ladder, the worse it gets. The cowardness and compliance of the church leaders is even a bigger problem. The Orthodox church is in much better condition because its core lies in Russia and Eastern Europe, where it is out of reach of the freemasonic power.

KZbin doesn't like my reply and deleted it. The higher you climb in the church hierarchy the more secular / liberal / masonic and Christly it gets. The complience with the current establishment and cowardness is a serious problem in the Church.

I learned the Latin Mass by heart when I was an alter boy and can still say every word of it in my head. Faith is a personal thing …but faith and religion are not the same thing. The catholic religion was destroyed in Ireland by the clergy, they treated the people’s faith with contempt. I notice some comments on here longing for the past….if I might reference that controversial school book discussed recently, this longing for the past is typical family A behaviour…the past is when the clergy treated you like dirt, grabbed your money and laughed at you behind your back. The Irish Catholic Church was never for the poor, it was a religion for the well off… they took away peoples joy in living and replaced it with fear and guilt while all the time indulging their every degenerate perversion. They made every women and child second class citizens…..look to the future and to science.

Why are we talking about bringing another new mass, novus ordo II? I discovered the Latin mass recently, I know exactly what you're talking about fr Brendan, it's beauty is beyond this world. Why don't we just go back to that? I wholeheartedly agree we are short-changing people immensely by not giving the sacred liturgy to them, in its proper form. As another priest said to me, if the Latin and novus ordo masses can't co exist together then the novus ordo should be the one to go. Also before you assume I'm a non Negotiable trad, i love both masses. How could I not. Albeit Latin mass is my preference. And I go to my local novus ordo. But I bring my kids to the Latin mass at least once a month, I don't want them missing it. I agree fr, bring back the smells and bells and enchanting beautiful churches, not auditoriums. I'm not a hater of the current state, but we must agree they tried to make the mass more attractive to get people in, and it simply didn't work. PS another priest I know only does Latin baptisms in his novus ordo church. He said people just lost interest with the new rite. But the congregation are glued to proceedings when Latin is done. PPS Mass of the ages, if you haven't seem it here on KZbin is a superb watch. 3 part show Thank you for your common sense talks fr, keep them coming One final thought, do you do mass ad orientum fr? And Alter rails. We do in our local novus ordo church here in Australia. It's one way of bringing some reverence back.

Father, if you wouldn’t mind, I’d like to make a suggestion. Many viewers will skip your videos because you make no mention in your title what your subject concerns. If you would elaborate a bit more and mention what specific topic is covered in a particular video, you might get more curious viewers who are interested in the topic. For instance in this video, you could have entitled this video: “Ireland and the Modern Diversity found in Her Worship”. Or, “A Need for a Fine-Tuning of the Catholic Mass” Just saying... God bless.

The church makes huge mistakes when the church goes to meet the people where the people are rather than the people going to where the church is. Not all progress is is progress in a positive direction. Our church must stay steadfast.

According to 1 Corinthians 1:10-17, Paul says that Christ is not divided. In this passage, Paul urges Christians in Corinth to stop dividing themselves into factions based on their loyalty to different Christian leaders. He asks if he was the one who was crucified to pay for their sin, and he says that they were not baptized in his name. Just Sayin, But I am glad Jesus Christ told it with Clarity & said, “I Will Build MY Church “.. Not Men building their own church ! As in ; “ Many will come claiming I am he”. ? Sure enough, that has happened .

Soooo…It’s good to have liturgies in Roman Catholic Churches offered by priests not in communion with Rome ? 🙄. Respectfully, this is not the route back to a more reverent NO Mass. Returning to Roman Catholic liturgical roots is the answer. Respectfully submitted.
