I'm new to Orthodoxy and have never heard of him. Nonetheless, after learning of him burning the Lenin portrait, he is now my hero! 😅 YES! God gives us courage to destroy evil. We just need to remember that!
@m4rix20364 ай бұрын
Well the reason the portrait was burned was because people were idolizing Lenin, in particular this was during the period after Stalin died when religious persecution began again under Khrushchev after Stalin had ended it. Khrushchev spread all these famous lies about Stalin, such as the idea that Trotsky was the rightful successor to Lenin and that Lenin hated Stalin. Those who idolized Lenin were Trotskyites, and this was precisely the evil that St. Gabriel opposed. "Stalin fought for the greatness of Russia and actually preserved the Church of Christ from the pogrom carried out by the Trotskyites, most of them hated the Church, Russia and the Russian people with its history. Stalin preserved Russia, showed what it means to the world. Therefore, as an Orthodox Christian and a Russian patriot, I bow low to Stalin." -Saint Luke of Crimea

@@m4rix2036 Why are you spreading such heresy as worshipping Stalin
@lindaphillips46464 ай бұрын
@@m4rix2036i have assumed that they were basically the same. If St. Luke said that, i suppose i must consider it. Stalin had been an altar server in Georgia, who had developed a hatred for the Church, so i had been told. He clearly did terrible things. A bit hard to reconcile the words of St. Luke to what i have known..
@SlickJim24 ай бұрын
I think the biggest reason the pause of christian persecution under Stalin happened was the bad situation mid WW2. They just couldn't afford murdering their own religious countrymen anymore and had to delay that project until national stability was restored.

I’m still a mere catechumen, lord willing soon to be baptized and received into the Orthodox Church, and as many have said “your patron Saint will pick you” Well, when I heard of St. Gabriel many months ago shortly after my first liturgy, and heard his life story, I wept and wept. There are many, many of Gods saints I adore and love and admire, but St. Gabriel chose me, and I accept! Glory to god for ALL things and may holy St. Gabriel intercede for the salvation of our souls. Amen. ☦️

Hi, I’m very new to the faith. I didn’t know that you needed to pick (or be picked 😊) a Saint as your patreon to follow his/her example. I’m moved by this. Even before considering it or being interested in reading about Orthodoxy I’ve bought icons of St. George I don’t know why. Since the first time I saw a statue of him, I can stop thinking about him. Even if I didn’t search about his life or without knowing anything about him. If there is an image of him anywhere I can find it I don’t know how. Even I bought icons and pendants of Christ and Theotokos and also of St. George as a last minute choice without knowing why. Is this a sign? I don’t know how is the process.
@fed_zeppelin_4 ай бұрын
@@MTech07you don’t need to necessarily just follow your patron saints example, rather, all of Christs beloved saints we should follow as examples for our own struggle, as they teach us different lessons regarding different facets of life. However, if Saint George is speaking to you in that way, and you feel drawn toward him, then maybe this could be a consideration for your patron saint. St. George is the name of my Parish and he is a wonderful Saint, a great example of courage, and may he intercede to Christ God that our souls be saved!

Absolutely love the title and reference. St. Gabriel is one of my favorite saints ever since I learned about that event. As to our neighbors and friends becoming saints ... for the last three years of my wife's life, she suffered incredibly, but fought to live on. She determined last year that it was time to go on hospice. She spent the last two months of her life preparing to die and die well. In the presence of about twenty people, including a priest, after she passed, the room was flooded with the smell of myrrh. The smell continued into her requiem liturgy, right up until the casket was closed. There are other things I could share, but the point is, she is **living** proof that dying in the odor of sanctity is still possible today! Handmaiden of God, Veronica, pray for us!

I never get tired of hearing about St Gabriel of Samtavro. They call him a fool-for-Christ, and I understand why. I would probably think that he was unhinged if I saw him. But, here's the thing, he's not mad and he's no fool, even though he may appear to be, to people like me. It is I who is the fool, the one who lives irrationally. I may not have stayed prostrated before the altar, such as Fr. Gabriel ordered visitors to do, and may have been frightened out of Church by the voice of one so strange ordering me to my knees. But, then again, by the Grace of God, I may not have done these things. Lord, have mercy! St. Gabriel, pray for me, an irrational sinner!

I was misdiagnosed schizophrenic too, although my story isn't nearly as harrowing as Saint Gabriel's, and I've sinned grievously in my nearly 32 years, so I don't mean to measure up with such a great man. The last therapist I was seeing introduced me to Internal Family Systems Therapy, in which patients are encouraged to explore separate subpersonalities or "parts" of the mind that act independently from one another. A short while later, my Doctor prescribed a long-acting injectable antipsychotic "to help with the voices." I responded, "Who said anything about voices?". For years, I've been telling therapists that its just me in my head but, despite all that effort and multiple other redundant diagnoses, _experts_ have now diagnosed me schizophrenic. I am very concerned many others have fallen into this trap. A statistic I've seen being tossed around is that 90% of people suffering from schizophrenia reject their diagnosis, alarming numbers considering those diagnosed might be right to do so. Even today, with all our _advances_ in medicine, it is not possible for mental health practitioners to monolithically arrive at any consensus and, when they pretend to, its sacrosanct, which runs counter to the scientific process. Competence varies among them too, or they're selectively empathetic when their worldview places patients outside of their salience frames. Doctors are human, they get stumped, rely on shoddy guesswork, convince themselves its not guesswork and make hasty decisions like everyone else. I've never heard voices of any kind, nor have I experienced visual hallucinations, thankfully not from demons but also nothing holy. As far as my rational mind can explain, its just been me up there considering conflicting perspectives and wavering between right and wrong. Although, just now, I'm reminded of a quote: "the Devil's greatest trick was convincing the world he didn't exist" and I wonder how our thoughts are influenced. Now that I'm done wasting time with those people and, this time, managed to dodge a psych ward, I'm hoping I'll find a home in Orthodox Christianity going forward, as learning about the Saints and their many miracles has been helping me find solace and make sense of the chaos in the world today.

My mother personally knew St. Gabriel and he would often invite her into his cell. He had a very interesting reputation; people were simultaneously scared of him and they also admired him. When my mom first started visiting the monastery people would tell her to be careful around him and to also remember everything he tells her because oftentimes it would come true. One day my mom was invited into his cell along with another lay woman and he asked them to help peel potatoes. In the room there was only 1 chair and my mom was in her early 20s at that time and St. Gabriel and the woman was much much older. St. Gabriel tells my mom "go sit down" and my mom kindly refuses because she felt bad that they were going to stand instead. He demanded her again, "go sit down" and my mother humbly refused again. And this really made him mad and he was yelling at her repeating, "you are so stubborn, do as I tell you". And my mom instantly sat down on the tiny wooden chair. 😂 After this situation unfolded he was looking at her, like looking deeply into her soul, and he said "I see your fate being far far away.... you have a tough life ahead of you but after 40 you will get everything you wish for". At that time my mom had truly no idea what he meant by that because they lived in Georgia when the Soviet regime was "flourishing" and my mom had no intentions of getting married or anything of that sort. Well... fast forward to the collapse of the soviet union and my mom had no other choice but to leave the country because she had to support her family since the economy and everything was just in total collapse and destruction. My mother came to America to work and she ended up finding my father and they got married in the US and had me and my brother. ☺️ My mother always remembers his words and it has an impact on her to this day. He was an amazing individual and the stories she shares with me will give you goosebumps. We love St. Gabriel❤️ Thank you for sharing a piece of his story, Father Josiah. 🙏🏼
