Of all your Schuyler street vids, this one is best! Short line, switching, street runner! Thanks. We used to have lots of street running here in RI (port of Providence, Allens Avenue) but they're long gone. P&W still crosses the street but no longer runs on it.

Thanks so much, glad you liked it. I almost missed the action (in fact I didn’t arrive on-scene until just after they made the initial shove up from the yard, about a mile or so north of the brewery).

Thanks for documenting the brew house train operations! Wish I lived in one of those houses! If someone is curious, that single frame that flashed was a triangle with the words “media offline”
@railroadingrambler2184 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. That “Media Offline” message will sometimes come up in my program, “DaVinci Resolve,” and usually I catch it before rendering the video. Alas, not this time.

This is a great shot and I view with interest as I hit that turn out on my bicycle while riding down the center of the tracks in October. I had a camera rolling at the time but the violent crash caused a failure of the write of the data, so I have no footage. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon and I was trying to get the cab view of Schuyler St. I will never look at that switch the same again. The rail will grab the front wheel of a bicycle or motorcycle and snap to to the left. I went over the handlebars and suffered a broken rib, broken nose, two black eyes and a split lip. Two people stopped to help and they were very nice to me, a credit to the people of this great city. Apparently the last time it was a motorcycle and the rider was taken away by ambulance. Luckily I did not go to the hospital and recovered quicker than I would have thought. These are great videos, and the railroad on the street is a treasure for Utica. Please be aware of the dangers of two wheeled vehicles crossing RR track at anything less than 90 degrees. I had crossed the other way multiple time with no issues. Keep up the good work on these videos! (Do I notice a fresh patch to the pavement right where I crashed?)

I was returning from a bike trip up north approx 30 years ago and got off the Arterial at Oriskany Blvd. I then got onto Schuyler and my bike tires got caught in the grooves and down I went! Someone rushed over to see how I was but, fortunately, nothing but a few scratches. I was likely going about 10 mph. Glad you liked the video!

GREAT CATCH!! Probably the only time you'll see 2 locomotives in the brewery. Especially the one from MA&N. Always look forward to your vids.

Oh man! I could watch 1000 of these videos in and out of the brewery and never get tired of it! I need to figure out how to find their beer here in NE Ohio!? Maybe online?
@meme-xn6wr4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I would suggest looking up FXmattbrewing online, and see what happens. Idk if they deliver. From what I understand, their product doesn’t get very far out of NY state, since it’s actually a somewhat small brewery (from what I understand)

For bulk operations, once the infrastructure is in place, rail is by far more economical, especially when dealing with a short line. Since the rail is already there it's most likely more economical (on a short line) than the number of trucks they'd need to replace them. Gross weight restrictions on railroad is 286,000 lbs. Average grain hopper tare weight is about 61,000 lbs allowing for about 225,000 lbs of grain per hopper. Finding a standard weight on tandem-axle grain hopper trailers is proving to be more difficult because of the number of size variations available, but the average for over-the-road ones seems to be about 25,000 lbs. After that, it's a simple case of math and economics. To replace two railcars, regardless of the time frame, you'd instead need around 18 semi trailers delivered and hauled, either from the originating facility or a transload facility nearby. At that point you're also partially paying for the drivers, insurance, trucking company overhead, etc. When talking about Class 1 common carriers like CSX, I think the economical standpoint dwindles because I believe they've jacked up their prices considerably. History would seem to indicate that CC's would much rather perform the long haul operations and let short lines handle the end-users, unless it's on the order of multiple cars a day. (This is from an outsider's perspective, I could be totally wrong on that). The infrastructure installation to put this into place is a much larger capital expense, however, so you really only see it on cases where the rails were already there and have been maintained, unless the company has a lot of money to throw at it early on in the hopes of offsetting it over a long time.

An E8 got stuck in the brewery back in Erie-Lackawanna days and, according to a retired NYS&W engineer, he once brought an SD45 into the brewery.
