As far as I remember, the mystery song at 26:25 was improvised on the spot. It's possible it was something we'd been working on but never finished, but most likely it was made up as we went. A lot of the early material was written like that, and most concerts had at least one improvised jam. It's possible that was a precursor to Hyperventilation, similar vibe. It's funny seeing skinny little baby me going all "wasted Alex Chilton" on Silent Night at the end. Thanks for throwing this up, Todd. Hope you're well.

Anton seems to rip on Jeff, Dean and Matt in interviews when he says things like ‘none of the guys in Dig! are in the industry anymore, but I am.’ Okay, but this lineup was gold. Take it From the Man! is one of the best albums of all time, and it’s because of the chemistry of this group that Anton’s singing and songwriting was able to shine. I’ll never forget the first time I heard “Vacuum Boots” and “Who.” I had been listening to the Beatles/Byrds/Stones and the San Francisco sound for years. These guys took me by surprise.

When watching this show live @Todd’s Tapes did you think, these guys are going to be big, different? Or did it feel like it was just a really good local band?
@ToddsTapes3 жыл бұрын
Felix that is such a great question. Even back in 1995 it was special when BJM played at the Starcleaners. Lots of bands came through there over the years but when BJM played it was an event. I believe Anton was dating someone from Noise Star that fall and when he was just hanging around the space it sorta felt like a celebrity was there (at least to me, I won't speak for everyone else). It's fun seeing him in the background of other videos I have been going through. If you look closely you'll see him in the audience for the Knittles World Contact Day album recording. Personally, while I appreciated their music and respected the performances, I gotta say I was into other local bands more than BJM at the time. As you can see the bulk of my tapes are Fantasy, Gun and Doll Show and the Sunshine Club. Music touches everyone differently I guess and those bands were hitting that nerve just a bit more for me than BJM back then. So to answer your question, no I had no clue they would go on to be that big and that different, but I knew very well that they were much more than a good local band :) I hope that answers your question and thanks for watching!!

Matt Hollywood - I've always looked at him as rather insignificant in the Big Picture (Sorry Matt) But the best thing he did in BJM IMO was lay down those classy, sloppy but right on bass lines. I saw them in 2010 and he wasn't even playing bass. He was just standing there. But I can't deny he helped shape the early BJM sound with his reckless bass. JMHO = thanks!
@fcmhockeyvideos2 жыл бұрын
Your humble opinion isn't all that humble and is very wrong. Matt Hollywood has some of BJM's finest contributions in their prime years - 1996 to 1998 - and he pretty much finalized BJM's 1998 albun Strung Out In Heaven since Anton wasn't contributing as much due to his addiction problems. Matt's vocals also weren't exploited to its full potential.
