Very good analysis. I personally believe Nicholson purposely called on the detonator. In the scène previous to that, he comments “What have I done”, showing that he shows regret for building the bridge, and that his act was treasonous. In his final moment before death, he wanted to redeem himself and not be labeled as a traitor to the crown. Also, he realizes at the end he has become just like Colonel Saito. By the end, the officers and the sick work on the bridge just to finish it, even though if he didn’t it most likely wouldn’t have affected him. In that one moment, he realizes that he and Colonel Saito are not very different. He lost his principle, the one which at the beginning and middle of the movie he held onto so dearly. He realizes all of this, and blows up the bridge to redeem himself in the eyes of himself to give him a peaceful death.

I really liked and still do , the monoloque on the bridge , with the words "Beautiful" and this cold blooded Japanese commander looks at the Eastern Sun setting and says ;"YES!! Beautiful" 😂. As ive aged and researched Lean and his brilliant films , i really do chuckle at his subtle Digs at the square stiffs of those times ? Pr8nce Phillip at some premiere of Sir Leans , could only come up with ;"Good flick is it ?" as he entered the cinema .. Dear oh dear , what Sir Lean had to suffer to get his films made .? Having to deal with the likes of those Dross types . Lean was a tough mother ..😉👍
