I think live tribals are fine as long as the audience can actually hear people and follow what's going on. Several minutes of unintelligible whispering is not fun to watch, but real-time strategy adaptation is!

There’s part of me that’s always wanted someone after 10 minutes of live tribal to yell “you know what? I’m voting individually” and just take their seat. I know there’s a solid chance it would lead to them getting voted out, but can you imagine the gag if everyone just got fed up of whispering to each other and huddling up and made an individual decision that tore up alliance lines?

that's a bad move though.. not just for that tribal, but for the next ones as well. you basically announced to everyone that you can't be trusted as a number/a vote in your alliance. aside from the risk that the target will be you that night, once you go back to camp your alliance will be wary with working with you. the opposing alliance will also use that crack to convince them to vote you out next bc you're unpredictable. players have been voted out simply bc they are unpredictable/ indecisive. except if you're Sugar in Gabon.. then you'll make the F3 for sure 😂😂

@@sibernout7717 well you can't trust unpredictable people. bc they might self destruct your alliance. both alliances usually agree they don't want that kind of person in the game. think of Debbie (kaoh rong), Christy (amazon), Jennifer (kaoh rong), Gabriel (marquesas), Sarah (cagayan), & more. if your only reason to 'vote individually' is bc you can't take whispers in a tribal, that's concerning for any alliance. *but* ofc if you do it for strategic reason, and do not announce "you know what? I'm voting individually" to the whole tribe, then you'll be fine. point is, don't come across as unpredictable/unreliable lol.

im a big edge of extinction (season) defender. i do get why people would not like it, but a season where the newbies outclass the returnees, where each of the returnees are production favorites, is a rare sight. i just wish the twist was consistent in visibility, since i loveeee the very petty drama and the way they shot their confessionals in uncomfortable close ups.

I know this may not 'count', but one of my favourite 'live' tribal councils has to be on Australian Survivor 2017 (Season 4), or what I simply call "I'M SORRY ANNELIESE!". For context, there was a rough alliance of five in the Samatau Tribe of Tessa, AK, Ziggy, Jarrad and Peter, and heading into tribal they were intent on splitting the vote between Locky and Tara, as they were thinking that either person may have an idol in his pocket. Locky and Tara manage to convince Anneliese, who is technically not part of the alliance but agreed to split the vote with the majority alliance, to vote AK just in case the alliance messes up their vote split. Despite Anneliese flipping, the vote split still works, 3-3-2 tying Tara and AK, and in the revote Tara gets all of the votes (with the exception of Locky's) out. And then, a bottle split without the bottle happens, and the tribe is sent STRAIGHT into a double tribal council. This blindsides the alliance, who still want to split the vote knowing there might still be an idol floating about, but are unsure of who exactly to vote as they are sent straight to the second vote, without prior deliberation. Anneliese and Locky are the first two to vote, and Anneliese flips to vote Locky out. Then Ziggy steps into the voting confessional booth. She shouts, and I mean SHOUTS, into the camera "I'M SORRY ANNELIESE!". I count it as an amazing live-tribal move, and probably one of the only ones done in the voting booth, as it lays down the plan for the rest of her alliance as to target which person (because they still don't EXACTLY know who flipped a vote to target AK, and votes could fly wildly on untold assumptions), and potentially preventing major infighting in a majority alliance that could result in their downfall is one of the boldest, and best moves in Survivor history I could think of. To top off the hilarity of the moment, both Tessa AND AK likewise shout "I'm Sorry Anneliese" at full volume, almost as if to confirm that the message has been received, and after the vote split, Anneliese is given the boot. (I think Locky mainly stayed because he was a massive physical advantage for their tribe.) Granted, this was all undone by ANOTHER twist that meant that Tara & Anneliese were just being tribe-swapped instead of voted out, but at the moment and still (to this day), I consider it one of the best moves in a Tribal Council in any Survivor.

Malcolm's real optimal move in S26 (though I understand this wouldn't have occurred to anyone at that time): Don't say anything at all about the idols till Jeff asks for them. Then play both. Seven votes for either Malcolm or Eddie don't count. Jeff reads the last three: Phillip--Cochrane--Brenda. The Amigos plus the other four Stealths are going to revote. Malcolm announces that, just as his alliance split their votes in the first round, they will do so again; it's entirely down to the other four to decide who goes. The pecking order is exposed and Stealth R Us is finished. Whichever of the three goes, his or her closest backer(s) now start voting with Malcolm, Eddie, and Reynold.

@@Lizzy-yl4un Andrea works too. Phillip was the face of the alliance at that point and Cochrane was the brains of the operation. You want to make sure the third is also someone who’s pretty high up in the group so you don’t end up giving the others an easy out. Another variation would have been for Malcolm to vote Eddie so it becomes a straight up choice between Phillip and Cochrane, the two biggest beasts. However I think if you do that, you make it easy for them to wriggle off the hook, because probably they all vote for Phillip and stay strong in the next round, netting the same result as what really happened.

I agree that move would have been perfect. I do like changing Brenda to Andrea as the other commenter said. The thing I like is it also throws a spotlight on the 2 not voted on, in this scenario Phillip would probably be voted out, but it leaves Cochran and Brenda (or Andrea) looking like the biggest threat and make the rest of stealth r us to ask themselves if they could beat them. Leading to probably Cochran being voted out. The move might have secured them 6 more days and more time to get themselves into the majority with themselves at the center. Full credit to you, I fully love this idea.

@@braydenswinhart Actually I’m now thinking they should have put their votes on Cochrane, Brenda, and Andrea, and kept Phillip out of it. If he’s an option on the revote it’s too likely that the alliance will easily agree on him as a consensus choice, because he _was_ wearing on everyone’s nerves. You want their argument to be as intense as possible, so deny them any easy options.

I actually think the better strategy would be to keep the vote target and second idol secret, the three amigos vote for EACH OTHER so that both idols idol out all (ten?) votes successfully triggering a complete revote with all three amgios immune. They announce that they're all voting individually, but not for who, AND THEN they split their vote three ways (Brenda, Cochran, Andrea?) and just allow the chaos of the vote to do the work - then they use the cracks to split open the main alliance regardless which of the seven majority players goes home.

I think it's not a good strategy most of the time, because everyone can see who's whispering to who and for how long. If someone's getting less and quicker whispers then it's a big hint to play their idol.

I love your vids, buddy! Always hyped when a new one comes up ♥️ I think Hayden’s move to flip Ciera in BvW should have been noted in the evolution of live tribals. Hayden was going home, and he turned the tables to not only give himself immunity, but score a 33.33% chance of booting out the biggest physical, social, and strategic threat out of the game. Definitely one of the best failed moves of all time ❤️ (new video idea, maybe? Haha)

In my opinion, the best thing The Three Amigos could have done during that Tribal Council would have been to vote for three random people. That way, if Stealth R Us all voted for Malcolm or Eddie, they would all have to vote for one of three people in their alliance, greatly increasing the possibility of it breaking up.

Not sure if this was worth mentioning in the video, but in Survivor: Guatemala, there was almost a live tribal that Jeff shot down immediately. It was the tribal when Gary, who was the target played the immunity idol, and right after he sits down, everyone is about to whisper to each other to figure out who to vote out since they can't vote out Gary, and Jeff angrily shuts it down and says time to vote and Bobby Jon was voted out instead. I wonder what changed Jeff's mind about this format? Why didn't he tell JT to sit down?

Haven’t watched the video yet but I have to share a tale so please sit down, grab a snack, and strap in. It was a fateful Wednesday night in the year of our lord 2021 and I sat in my dorm with my roommate as we turned on the tv to excitedly watch survivor 41. Now, dear reader, I must make it clear my roommate was a survivor novice (as we all were at one point) and was not as well versed as your or I in the vast catalogue of survivor trivia, stats, and gameplay floating our psyche day in and day out. So my roommate was not prepared for the fright that befell him as during what seemed to be a normal straight forward tribal council quickly devolved into a mess of badly miked discussions and incomprehensible scuttling of contestant. My roommate had experienced his first life tribal. It’s something we’ve all done and try to forget but I’ll never forget the disgust and confusion plastered across his face as the votes were read and he had no concept or how or why they turned out as they did. I sat him down after and explained to him the horror of the live tribal. While the scars will never fully heal he continues to watch with me to this day albeit with the added tension that one day-any day-an episode could end with another cacophony of haphazard strategy and pandemonium called a live tribal.

I'm like in the ultra-minority of superfans that have actually enjoyed live tribals every single time they've happened. Whether they were good moves or not, whether they were subtitled or not, I legitimately enjoyed most of them because for once, tribal council actually MEANT something. Usually, it's all just theatre; one alliance is trying to act their asses off to convince the others that one plan is occurring instead of another, answers to Jeff's questions are completely meaningless, and ultimately, I just want to get to the vote. But if a tribal becomes live, what that means for me as a viewer is that this episode just became more interesting, and I have something to talk about that actually includes the events of tribal council. (But obviously, I'm more in favor of subtitling every single live tribal versus leaving us up in the air completely. I'd still like to know what's going on.) Personally, my favorite live tribal - aside from the EOE Julia boot - is one that you didn't mention that I think should've: the quintessential "Rustle Feathers" flip, where Hayden flips Ciera, thus forcing the show's second ever rock draw! No one got out of their seat, but it was similar to Marquesas in that it was very much a public forum, and plans were still changing at that very moment. Absolutely iconic, and if you ask me, the Big Brother import that should've had a return by now is Hayden, not Caleb, lol.

Idk if you’ll read this, but can you do a video on the history of voting blocs? When the earliest examples were, when the term was first used. I remember when players were suddenly saying it in Cambodia and I had no idea what they were talking about, so it was really hard to follow at times. I have a better understanding if it now, but sometimes I still feel lost when I hear it.

Idc what anyone says.. JT has the right idea. He already won. And his game in his winning season is like legendary in Survivor lol he already proved himself, why *not* take the big risks? People act like giving away the idol in HvV was "the dumbest move in Survivor history", but can you imagine how iconic it would have been if it worked? It was a good plan.. it just didn't happen to pan out. Game Changers, on the other hand, was just not smart lol but the way I see it.. he didn't have a ton of time to really think everything through and I think he just kinda panicked. It's funny that I'm even defending him like this lmao he's certainly not my favorite and, quite frankly, he gets on my nerves sometimes.. but tbf fair just about every single player has gotten on my nerves from time to time lol I just think people give him more sht than he deserves.

I think that live councils can be fun, but they have to be done like how Malcolm did it, or when a huge wrench is thrown in the plan like Penner winning a clutch immunity. If it's a good reason to force a scramble and/or cause chaos it's great. But if it starts to happen more often in a season, especially if it's just random, then it just gets annoying. And just shows a lack of planning and paranoia getting a little too high. While Malcoms chaos inducing live tribals were great, JT's live council was just a hail mary that screwed him almost as hard as his idol pass to Russel. Sometimes it's setoff by a great intentional play like just revealing an idol. Othertimes it's cuase of one bad wording or phase, thatmay not have been intentional, and just throws a potentially game changing tribal into a chaotic mess and some no-name nobody goes home and nothing happens, ir people like Malcolm get so screwed you can see him visibly trying to contain his anger as he's snuffed. I guess opinion on a live tribal can differ depending on who you're invested in. If it saves someone you like you might just enjoy that one, but hate another. Or it could come down to sheer not knowing what's going on or what's being said like the early ones. I bet that put a bad taste in alot of viewers mouths and has left a forever stain on the idea. Hopefully heather has hurt that idea for awhile.

I know WaW oversaturated the market a bit, but for my money one of the best tribal moments of all time is Sophie Clark at live tribal just fully getting up and declaring "okay why don't we just go over there and decide who's going home?"

They are actually part of the reason I stopped watching survivor after season 40. I don't like that no one trusts anyone and these random names come out of nowhere. Live tribal would be fine if we would actually follow what is being said. But multiple episodes of unintelligible whispering is annoying, the audience isn't being blind-sided, we're being stripped of one of the most interesting parts of the game, the strategizing. It makes the players seem so chaotic that they have no control either. But maybe I'm biased since I prefer the teens and 20s seasons way more.

The reason she was voted out, showing Will, Hannah, and Jay all the moves with the shells, that's what made her a game changer, seeing so far ahead in the game, that's why Jay and Will blindsided her, they realized how big of a threat she was. She's more of a game changer than the following: Caleb, Varner, Hali, and Debbie. They really couldn't have cast 4 more actual game changers?

Isn't it a distinct advantage to be seated in the back? Tribal Council should be done in an oblong semi-circle, with 3-5 feet of space between each seat.
