This is an unacceptable pandering to spectator over competitor. I am a retired coach, but if I were not retired, I'd be fighting the elimination of valid and SAFE te-waza techniques from judo tooth and nail! They are gutting this art and sport in one fell swoop for commercial reasons that have nothing to do with integrity or safety... how can you who call yourselves judoka sit by and let this happen? This is political action to delete valid SAFE techniques, and is clearly against the spirit and maxims of Judo. Suggest boycott IJF until they bring te-waza back where they belong... or, live with only a shadow of Judo's full potential glory. We boycott the IJF, respective their national "Representatives". There are lots of other grappling-tournaments, with less restricitive rules. Sometimes even mixed up, Gi & No-Gi in one class - the fun is all to you! No need for this IJF-stuff.

The "sissification" of Judo and the rise of BJJ actually has Judokas looking to our own past and discovering the "lost" techniques of the greats, like Tsunetane Oda whose newaza makes BJJ look primitive by comparison. As you know, the original list of techniques by Kano was a complete martial art, including atemi-waza (which should be taught long before the shodan level imho). As a result, "original" Judo is seeing a Renaissance of interest. So long as the techniques are being taught for real life even though banned in the sport, we can trust future Judokas to carry on the spirit of Kano, Oda, Maeda and Kimura. ;)

BloodofPatriots Congratulations!!! You said it all! Judo Rules are destructing Judo. Compare the present judokas with one, Mifune, Maeda or Kimura. They learned a complete art. Every single technique that exist in BJJ came directly or indirectly from Judo. The Gracie's learned Judo, that's fact.

@432fuuzz Well, I'm curious to know which technique of BJJ did not came from Judo. Could you give me an example?
@falmeida595 жыл бұрын
@432fuuzz I've practiced BJJ from 1996 and Judo since 1999. Jigoro Kano changed the rules of tournaments and Shiais in 1925 to limitate newaza, focusing on Nagewaza. Maeda was out of Japan since 1904. I've seen all this stuff not in the nowadays olympic Judo, but generally on ancient stuff and films of some old Judokas practicing. For example, Delariva's hook you can find at 6:45 in this movie... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYXOYYZ-gZmChLM

I was a junior national and university champion. These techniques are so ingrained in my arsenal that I can't fight anymore as i would get disqualified. Judo was great but they just want pretty throws now, back in the day we were feared by BJJ competitors as we could control the fight and dominate position. Now they cross train and we cut our arsenal down. Shame on you IJF.

As I predicted years ago, Judo will reach a point where the sport will start with both players in orthodox grips and first to break loses. If you believe that the exclusion of leg grabs has anything to do with safety or even 'dynamism of the sport', then I have two words for you: Naidangiin Tüvshinbayar Whenever a Japanese god gets crushed by something the IJF change the rules to make it so that Japan maintains their dominance. Kami Basami was outlawed because the god-most-high of Japanese judo Yamashita got injured.
@KOVA110 жыл бұрын
All judoka and fans need to share this video. The IJF needs to permit the return of these amazing throws back into Judo, in one form or the other. My proposal, and I believe it is a fair one, is that the leg grabs be permitted so long as the other arm is engaged in a legal grip on the judogi. This would ensure the stated "goal" of "dynamic" judo, as it would still minimize stalling and could be easily managed by the referees. Thoughts?

It just looks for me perfect, what you like and want to see in a kata, not only the knowledge how you have do to the tecnique, how it should look correctly is important too. A fine decent work that make it to a martial ART; the difference of professional and a talented hardworker.

Sadly the new rules emphasize the competitive side of judo even more than before. Judo was supposed to be a complete martial art, but nowaddays katas are being neglected and few sensei teach atemi waza anymore... and now they are starting to chop the go kyo as well to please the greedy IOC. The day judo gets out of the olympic games is the day we get our beautiful art back.

Idea I've had for a while: only allow one hand below the belt. This would keep big, dynamic throws (Kata Guruma, Te Guruma, hand assisted Sode), ensure there's still Kumi Kata and Kushushi, and would also remove the mindless charging for the legs that we saw in the lead up to the ban.

There is also a vid of BJ Penn wearing a BJJ white belt beating a BJJ blue belt. Does it prove that anyone can start BJJ and get the better of blue belts. Or does BJ Penn's quick progress through the ranks and competitively mean that BJJ is easy and anyone can become highly adept within a few years? No.

Judo is still awesome but they really fucked it up by banning all these great effective techniques. All they're doing is making people turn to arts where these artificial, commercially-inspired limitations do not exist. And they're making judo less effective as a martial art as well.

This is true. But the vast majority of instructors are (former) competition fighters, who will teach what they know best and use. The techniques banned from competition are fading from the curriculum, some are already pure theory.

Why should one of the goals of judo be how it looks judo is about results we are devolving while other martial arts evolve excluding when we need to include if they don't want judo in the Olympics then so be it but to change our art to appeal to Olympic politicians is crazy and an insult to our history and yes some of these throws are dangerous but so are all the throws if done under certain circumstances an O Soto gari at the wrong time can cause massive injury this is why we train so long and hard to take these throws this is the reason i stopped competing

On principle I don't like the idea of losing any techniques that work, BUT very few of he techniques displayed in this video are appealing to me at all and to me Judo plays much better with the new "sissified" rules. Sometimes a double leg or other banned technique can be good and ippon worthy but more often it's just a bunch of scrappy nonsense done in order to avoid playing the actual game (oh no he got a good grip on me, let me dive for his legs ineffectively and stall out in turtle! Zzz!). I respect the people whom have played the game a long time and were happy with the way it was, but an awful lot of people who criticize the new rules are relative newbies who should be standing upright in randori and learning to play proper judo instead of clinging to the 2 years of high school wrestling or 6 mos of BJJ they did before. From my POV playing Judo isn't just getting a person to land on their back by any means necessary, but doing so with strategy/cunning (feeling their balance, taking advantage of their movement, laying traps). Grabbing someone by the legs and squatting their weight while they flail doesn't have anything to do with maximum effect/minimum effort, sorry. As far as being "less effective" in a "real" right, grappling styles that emphasize upright wrestling (Greco and Judo) tend to do the best in mma or reality because the upright posture blends best with striking techniques.
@Inucat8 жыл бұрын
+Le Saucier this so much. We have a new Judoka in our group who used to compete, took a long break and is now back training, but our group is more fitness and social orientated and we only do randori because it is a good way to practice learned techniques, let of steam and break out a sweat. This "new" person always grabs my leg or does ko uchi maki komi, great technique but basically only thing in their repertoire. Can't break balance, weak kumi kata, no finesse etc. So frustrating to train with, even though we established that grabbing beneath the belt, or rather the leg, is forbidden even in randori because it can lead to injuries. Still does it all the time because "I won so many tournaments with this throw, you are just jealous" . Yeah because judo and especially randori is all about winning >.

This is absolutely not true ! mention me one freestyle wrestler who made it to the top level in judo. they might have the edge in countries where the talent pool is not big enough (like in the US ) but overall, judo takes dedication if you want to make it to the top , and succeeding in one wrestling style doesn't make you automatically succefull in another .

You shouldn't have a negative attitude towards new rules. True judoka can adjust his/her technique to the rules. If you can't do it you aren't trying hard enough. I really think judo looks better these days. Some big throws have disapeared but overall judo looks good atm.

A true martial art finds out ways to incorporate more techniques, not ban ones the Japanese can't handle. This is what happens when you go from martial art to martial sport with a utterly ridiculous bureaucracy in control of it.
@xanabella10 жыл бұрын
"True judoka can adjust his/her technique to the rules." Sounds like something a ref would say…utterly ridiculous comment. "True Judoka" will have a tremendously hard time controlling conditioned responses that have been developed over the course of many years (in my case 30) It's one thing to make minor changes to facilitate more accurate scoring, or to avoid interfering with the rhythm of a match, but they are CHANGING THE SPORT…Kata Garuma was one of Kano's principle techniques, he's written about it specifically…it's an integral part of Judo's heritage. "You shouldn't have a negative attitude towards new rules. True judoka can adjust his/her technique to the rules."…I have a very negative attitude towards bureaucrats bastardizing the sport I love…but this time they've gone too far…Judoka are getting AAU Sanctions for Tournaments and using the old rules…to hell with the IJF and the USJA…they're all sell outs…I'll compete locally with old rules or just compete in BJJ…ironically, it's the only place you can do pure Judo anymore (even Kani Basami)

So basically "if you think something is wrong you shouldn't speak out about it"... right... so when the IJF bans Osoto Gari we should just put up with it? No, we should speak out. And by the way, that may sound like something that would never happen, but removing Kata Guruma is on par.
@Inucat8 жыл бұрын
I get why people are angry that some of these techniques have been banned, some do look spectacular and are very effective but quite a lot of the examples in this video are just sloppy. Where is the finesse and the control? also quite a lot of these throws look dangerous and uncontrolled. If someone throws like that in our club, nobody will want to train with them because nobody wants to be injured. We do Judo for fun, health benefits and to be part of a group, we are a non competitive group. Leg throws aren't lost forever, you still need to know them for kata and grading, just not for shiai. If your training partner permits, you can also still use these in randori.
