Fellow citizen of the internet, Moses here. This is The Moses Kabandana Podcast - Where conversations worth having are had. I failed my private pilot's exam...twice. Life's good and there's plenty of lessons that are buried in most failures. I'm now a better pilot thanks to, partially, having failed my checkride a couple of times.

My instructor has told me the same thing, in different words. That I "overthink things too much". When I have a task instead of choosing the best way to me (right or wrong) I try to calculate three or four things simultaneously to find what other people might think is the 'best way'. I think this is what "getting in your own way" means. You know how to do it, so just do it. If it is wrong, you learn and adjust to go forward. I can relate to you. Thank you for sharing.

I am a pretty average (maybe below par) pilot but have passed private, instrument, and commercial check rides. The instrument is by far the most grueling. My strategy is always to do the check-ride day in "chunks". Don't think too far ahead. Remember this will take time. When the oral is done, take a bathroom break, double-check the weather, get some water, etc. Now do the check ride in stages: preflight (take your time), get situated in the plane (no rush), start the plane (no rush), get your clearance (no rush), double-check the atis (listen 2x if you have to), Just take your time do one maneuver at a time. Pretend like you are alone and you are showing yourself how to do these maneuvers. Lastly think "this is going to be fun" and put a smile on your face: when one is smiling performance has shown to increase; releases dopamine. You'll do fine.

Failing a check ride is probably saving a life. If you aren’t ready, get more training, and get ready, OR stop flying. It will save your life.

Failing a check ride is fine. There are a lot of pilots that never had a check ride failure and impecable record, yet got into accidents and major accidents with airlines. There are different kinds of people. Some people are good at tests others aren’t, doesn’t mean they will perform bad in a none check ride environment. Just keep on it, if you fail you will learn, that for sure. Keep it up and keep flying, enjoy it. You will get over it and you will become better. Thanks for the video

Stop flying for what ? You can fail cause you didn’t trained well , like you said , get more training and give it a try , if you don’t belong to the sky’s you will notice it from the first 3-5 hours of dual ! You will fail in aviation and maybe get yourself in dangerous situations if you think you know everything and you are born pilot , nobody is born pilot and we all learning everyday trying to be more safe up there and get more knowledge every day , every day till last flight ✈️❤

I failed my first private checkride because I didn't recognize the Class C transition and nearly clipped it. I just didn't recognize the boundary on the GPS and the DPE had to remind me about 100 feet before and I turned. I fixed it next time and passed. It happens and it sucks but don't give up! I honestly think failure is guaranteed during the aviation journey and anyone who says otherwise has no business ever being or judging a pilot. Don't give up bro! I say otherwise. Never failed a checkride over 35 years of flying in both the military and the airlines with almost half of that as an Instructor Pilot, same goes for most of my peers. If you find yourself failing multiple checkrides you need to do some serious self reflection. Aviation is unforgiving.

Keep in mind that most people will tell you failures are not a issues. But I’m going to give you a perspective from eyes as a JetBlue hiring captain. We look at all rating and their check rides, at 2 failures you are almost always boarder-line in our not hire able column. At 3 failures especially if in instrument rating, your application will be denied automatically by our application sorting software. I say this with realistic measures and not trying to bring your moral down but try your hardest to not have another failure. Your check rides are your hiring transcription. Captain Torres JetBlue

So many failures on pilot checkrides means either that the system is seriously flawed or it is rotten from the inside. Imagine if there were so many on driver's exams. And if a lot of people argue that plane is more dangerous, no it isn't. Nor for your, nor for the rest. The responsibility is kinda equal.

Thank you for your video my brother. I really don’t want to sound mean, but your DPE was correct. Twice in the video you said, “I started to panic.” PICs (Pilots in Command) really can’t do that in the face of an emergency. I can’t allow my family to go up with a pilot who will panic, and that’s what the ACS standards are there to test. Have you read through them? I don’t want to say that you’re not fit to be a pilot ever, but not right now. Changing DPEs won’t help, but I’ve got some real questions for your CFI! Where did you get your endorsement for the written test? I used a combination of Sporty’s and Gleim and scored 100% on the real exam after studying over 1000 sample questions. How many times has your instructor pulled power in your lessons and asked you to run through ABCDE?! Airspeed (this is where you throw that trim wheel down)-Best place to land-Checklist-Declare the emergency (squak 7700, 121.5)-Egress (open doors, shut off all fuel lines). If you’re panicking I’m guessing your instructor has never gone through this with you? Or you haven’t had enough repetition. You need to be able to chair fly through an engine out emergency completely from memory. Take a step back, evaluate your finances for this endeavor, and change instructors, not DPEs. He never should have signed you off for your checkride without going through multiple “mock” checkrides in advance. Hope I spoke with love, not condemnation ❤

The reason I failed my first attempt was because I turned over a wrong bridge. I was departing a busy class Delta on that pretend cross-country that DPEs have you plan the day before, and I needed to fly a visual departure that I've flown for a year (the entire duration of my private training) prior to the checkride. On top of that, I knew I'd need to fly it a month before - since the DPE gave me the cross-country in advance - and for weeks I flew that departure every single time I would go to the practice area to do high airwork. A couple of times I flew it twice in the same day. You take off, you fly over a lake, and there are two huge bridges that you can probably see from space. You have to turn over the first one and follow it inland. It is absolutely not possible to do it wrong even when you're doing it for the first time, let alone 300ths. With the examiner in the cockpit, I did it wrong. I overflew the first bridge and turned over the second one. It should have been over right there, but the DPE gave me another chance. I did some other stuff ok, but my mentality was completely shot and I eventually messed up something else that I'd never messed up since I could remember myself fly, and ended up being a failure. The thing is - if you're not used to taking these kinds of tests, there is simply nothing you can really do to prepare except experience it. I've taken thousands of book knowledge tests, including oral tests, so the oral portion of the checkride was a non-event. It felt boring. But I've never done anything that would prepare me for the flight portion, and looking back - there was absolutely nothing I could have done. If it wasn't the bridge - it would have been something else. Just roll with it, unless you're planning to fly professionally these failures don't matter. If you do - it sucks, but 2 failures is probably not the end for you. Overprepare for the remaining checkrides and make sure you get them the first time.

It was so HARD that the examiner looked out of the side window to see if the landing gear had come up out of the top of the wings, and he said as much.😮 But he wanted the first third of the runway and I gave it to him!😂

Ah. Don’t worry about it. I’ve never really had a student that started with me fail. But I worked at a school where there were 5-6 failures per student. They are all commercial pilots now. The emergency landing is an important one. Most trainer planes will go to best glide with full up trim. I’ve had 13 engine failures in 7000 hours. So that one is important. Don’t ever change where you will land. You need to A airspeed best guide B best place to land C cocpit check (this is where you check all the red controls D declare emergency 121.5 and 7700 E arm elt and prepare to evacuate (pop the door open) Learn that like the back of your hand. If you do have a bad time, doing these things and talking through them will really change your outcome. But you’ll be fine man. Just keep on going.

I have been a CFI AGI for almost 40 years. What the examiners look for is Confidence in operating the aircraft, being off altitude in a turn is not a fail. If you know you can do a steep bank and hold altitude , then you just do it. The examiner is not in the plane, you are PIC, he is your passenger and you are flying him somewhere, show him you are a Private pilot. I would not sign a student off for a check ride unless they were ready. 44 students one year 43 passed first time. Confidence!!! My recommendation.. Good luck.... :)

You sound like a guy who does not like to waste his time....but 38 days from first flight to the practical is pushing it for anyone. You'll get more comfortable with more time in the air which will lessen a tendency towards paralysis via over- analysis and relax you to the point of being able to hear & follow ATC instructions better. From what I can see, you have all the makings of a fine pilot. But Rome wasn't built in a day & there's no substitute for experience. Hoping you get back in the air soon while all that knowledge is still fresh in your head and build upon it. Look at it as more of a marathon than a race and you'll fly farther. If you failed twice, who is signing you off?…….that’s the problem, when you said, “you don’t know me”….he does know you and that’s why you failed twice….failure is not all right especially in an environment like flying. Other pilots are expecting you to follow and understand atc instructions, not to mention a passenger you may be flying with. You are responsible for your actions. Failure to follow atc instructions or not knowing where to land in case of an emergency could kill you or someone else. So failure is not alright when it comes to flying……as the saying goes, “would you be comfortable putting your family on a flight this guy”. ABSOLUTE NOT…….

I just completed my solo check ride and I was initially scared but so proud afterwards. Thanks again.

Congratulations, you overcame your doubts and got your PPL certificate! Failure is an important part of life. It's humbling and gives you a different perspective. If you think about it, you're all keyed up to pass the checkride and once you're disapproved, it takes alot of the burden away because you're only going to be tested on those maneuvers that the DPE disapproved. I'm 64 and did my seaplane rating in Feb. I failed the checkride as well on glassy water landings, idle and step taxis. It took me another few hours before I changed instructors and within a half hour I nailed everything. I then passed the checkride. It was only afterward that I realized that during my PPL, instrument and commercial training, I never trained with only one instructor. Flying with two or three instructors gives the exposure to different personalities and training methods that really helps to better understand the maneuvers. I'm sure that you've heard this before. Now that you have your cert. it's a license to learn, so go up and decide a mission with goals each time you fly. If you think you need more training or have questions or doubts about something, grab an instructor for a lesson. Blue skies!

Congratulations on passing and maintaining a good attitude. You may want to consider if accelerated training is the best method for you? If you plan to be a professional pilot, you want to try to have a great record of performance moving forward because, pretty soon, all test outcomes (scores, pass/fail attempts) will be recorded by the FAA and will become your educational transcript, so to speak. I’ve read about this, although I’m not an expert. So, future employers will be able to look back on all test scores and it could become a factor in hiring. In the past, just having the ratings was enough, but now your transcript may help or hurt. When you are “in your own way” this is usually a symptom of a rushed learning plan, because you have got all the details but haven’t built the wisdom to put it all together. That takes some time. Take your time to get ready and ace all the practice written exams before sitting for the real one. Check out shepherd air test prep. You are an impressive and positive guy and I look forward to following your progress. Best wishes!

Glad you shared this story. I’m about half way through my training for my PPL I have my A&P I had failed my airframe practical (it’s definitely mentally tough) and got to start over where I left off. So the check ride sounds similar to that? If you fail at a certain point you can come back to just finish up what you didn’t do?
@MosesKabandana
@MosesKabandana Жыл бұрын
Yes, but I believe you have to retest within a certain amount of time for that to apply. If you wait too long for a retest, then you’ll need to start from scratch. Good luck!

Your failure is also YOUR INSTRUCTOR'S FAILURE. Pilots are risk managers. There should never be any risk.... of failure. Your instructors should go back to flight school and learn how to analyze skill and good judgement. "The successful outcome of the maneuver should never be in doubt." This is language from the PTS, the predecessor of the ACS. This concept of doubt is important in aviation. There should never be a doubt that an airplane, or one of it's systems, will fly. There should never be a doubt that a takeoff can be followed by a landing. There should never be a doubt that you can land with that crosswind, and gety stopped on that short runway, and maintain control with all that snow and ice. If you are negotiating with doubt, you are gambling against risk.

I failed my first checkride...I completely missed the airport I was directed to go to. A little asphalt runway with an intersecting grass strip. Never been there before, but the examiner wanted me to land there following emergency procedures. I was so nervous I didn't even recognize that I was right on top of it...just kept flying and looking for it. After a few minutes she said...You have failed. Had this been a planned flight, it would have never happened...I'm pretty meticulous when it comes to planning. Went back a few of weeks, and 4 or 5 hours of soloing, later and passed it...I wasn't as nervous the second time around and kind of knew what to expect. It is an intense experience and can be overwhelming. Stay calm and fly on. Good luck!

Why did you seek a different DPE when you failed twice by the initially? Seems the initial was failing you for a reason. The second DPE passed you in 25min????? The DPE was a lazy rubber stamp. Kind of feels like you seeked out a rubber stamp DPE. They all have their own reputations, so all instructors know. I hope you are fully ready and fly safe buddy. Don’t become a statistic.

Appreciate your honesty an openness. I'm sure it will help some pilots. Many flight instructors don't talk about the true reality of aviation. That is, your airplane want to kill you. That it happens every day. That unless you take this more serious than anything else in your life, you are going to die in an aircraft accident. The first failure is very hard to understand. Your airplane wants to kill you and your loved ones every time you take off. If there is only one thing you need to understand about being a pilot in command, it's what to do when your engine fails. Some pilots are never able to accept the true and harsh reality that the airplane you fly WILL kill you. And unfortunately it will likely be the time you have your wife and kids in the plane. Only when you accept the reality of this, train for it, are mentally prepared for it, are you ready to be a pilot. I personally have no problem with incompetent pilots who end up killing themselves. It's their life and in this case, stupid kills. But all too often they take some poor innocent person with them. Some people don't have the mental strength to be pilots. To be able to focus and think clearly in a life and death situation which you WILL face at some point in your flying. Honestly, you need to ask yourself if you are really taking this DEADLY serious? To completely botch the most critical task in all of aviation shows a frightening lack of understanding of the seriousness of flying. In my opinion, you need to spend some time looking at the gruesome aviation accident photos and then picturing your loved ones in them. Perhaps then, you will start to understand the true magnitude of incompetence and a lack of serious commitment to aviation. Not trying to pile on, just want to give you something to think about.

Failure is part of being human. The important thing is to never give up on your dream and be better prepared in the understanding and materials. Many professional pilots make mistakes day in day out. What’s important is to learn from the mistakes. We strive to be perfect, but we are only human. In your case, may be asking yourself, am I ready? Get someone’s opinion. Do a mock up check ride, etc. before the real check ride would have maybe better prepared you. Even after you get your ticket, it’s a license to learn. So to speak.
