"Ark at e" derives from "Hark at He" (hark: verb: listen), as in "listen to him"... So if someone is chatting a load of crap or boasting or similar, you could say "Ark at ee mind". People have started using it to mean "look at him" more recently.

Ta for learning I to speak proper like. This video is gurt ace! I was born in Bristol and grew up there in the 1970's and 80's. It is interesting that the same Bristolian phrases are still in use "Cheers Drive". My favourite was always when having a pint in the Horney Crumpet on the centre (The Horn and Trumpet). Random blokes would come to up you and say "My mate says you keeps looking at I. Swant a make summut of it?"

'ark' 'is surely short for 'hark' which means listen, so 'ark at ee' would be 'listen to him' as in 'who does he think he is, or what's he on about etc?' I think 'mint' is also used elsewhere. Do Bristolians still add the letter L to words ending in vowels?

I think that the word "ark" is a shortening of the archaic terms _hark_ and _hearken_ (these are very rare in Modern English), originally meaning 'listen'. It's no surprise that the meaning in the Bristolian Dialect is still very similar to its original meaning.

Mint comes from minted not mint the sweet. It's like saying that is freshly minted i.e made and is therefore in brand new top notch condition. I'm only 60 miles down the road from Bristol so some of those phrases are used here too in Worcester although it has faded over the years and you tend to only find thick accents in much older people or on the rougher council estates.

Doesn't "mind" in that context mean, "you better listen to me." ? I'm from the U.S. (the South) and people here tell their children "You better mind me." I think it's sort of like that, but it's probably also used for emphasis. That's how I interpret it anyway. Also, that "Ark a ee" thing is related to the OE word "hark" I suspect. It's funny, in the U.S. South we massacre (or pronounce, if you prefer) the phrase "That's all right" in almost exactly the same way. It sort of sounds like "sol right" when we say it.

Old Bristolian here. Not sure if it's been mentioned but "ark at 'ee" is from "Hark", or to listen. I never heard it in the context of "look" but more to listen, mostly making fun of someone who thought too much of themselves. There's also the thing of putting an "L" on the end of words or names - like "A Night At the Operal". Otherwise pretty good job seeing as you're not proper Brizzle.

Ark at ee listen to ee. I'm Gloucestershire but I use it all the time and occurd.i thought occurd was a real word for years and I didn't realize it was the same word as awkward. Even when I read the correct spelling I'd say occurd. 😂 And in Wotton, which I say wu'en, we have an area called synwell but no one calls it that, it's synall!

Could "ark et e" be "hark at he"?
@liviahurkett3597

Ark comes from the word Harken to listen. So "ark at ee" means listen to him or "ark at she".Listen to her.You missed out eee makes i laff. I am a real Bristolian it took me 20 years to lose my accent and speak English without dropping an r here and there.When i came home it took me three years to really be able to talk local again. Theece gohim where thee cassant bakim assant. The GO in goh is pronounced like the GO IN GOD so it's GOH-IM.got it ha ha. What does it mean? it usually means you've parked the car and now your blocked in and can't reverse to get out. So roughly translated.You've got it where you can't back it out haven't you. Another old word is BLIGE which means blimey. So you'd say. "Blige, Mu Bleedin knot init?!" Meaning: "Blimey mum It is very warm, isn't it?"

Thanks, Alex! That was a hoot! I was charmed. There were several transferable expressions that I wrote down, so I could incorporate them into my daily interactions. I love words! I'm gonna use "that's proper (good)," "all right, lover?" "cheers, drive," and "that's mint, innit?" I'm from Canada, Ontario, specifically; I'm not so up on our youth lingo, being a middle-aged person, but there are definitely classic Ontarioian phrases too.
