California City is the state's third largest city, trailing only San Diego and Los Angeles. So what happened?

Recently my husband and I bought a home in California city. Have family members here as well whom have lived there for years. This place is new to us. I have always lived in Los Angeles. California city is slowly growing. More homes being built. More land being bought. More businesses being put like a star bucks which I am very happy about😋 New small markets. Liquor stores. I’m sure the promises once made for California city will uprise 🚍🏡🏥🛤🏨

I went here as a young teen. 1970- 1977. It was an awesome place to camp and enjoy the mystical, quiet, and spiritual wilderness that is the California Desert. We spent days and weeks exploring, catching and releasing all sorts of beautiful reptiles, explored the abandoned mines and old shacks that dotted the landscape here and there. I hope that it stays quint and beautiful as it was back then. I live in Wisconsin now and haven't been back there for many years. It saddens me that markets, liquor stores and houses and starbucks are being built. The Mojave is one of our last great natural wilderness areas. Lets keep it that way.

I remember reading years ago that Walt Disney once was going to built Disneyland in California City, before the California City idea went bust. Disneyland was originally not supposed to be completed until around 1965. Disney only started building in Anaheim after the California City idea went bust. Even with the change from Calfornia City to Anaheim, he was able to build his park in less than a year after getting approval to build it in Anaheim.

Being a former Los Angelino I can relate to the issue there. I have driven up to Bakersfield and passed by Lancaster. California City looks amazing and filled with potential. To get people to live up there I believe you'll need a gimmick.... A bullet train from Los Angeles to California City... back and forth, etc . There should be no stops in between. And, the trains rails should be in the middle of the City so.... California City can create a few stops from the entrance all the way to the end of the tracks.... That way...inside the city limits the train can serve as a LRT or MRT system as well....
@BeatBoyStill Жыл бұрын
that's a smart idea, it would appeal to a lot more people since they could keep their jobs, but yet again that track would be crazy expensive to maintain to the point where daily tickets would add up, not to mention the volume of people it would need to hold, 3 normal trains could work but the main issue that is affecting the bullet train progress would affect this one, if it ever became a possibility.

The problem is simple. The land was sold in individual pieces. To build a city, you need large development. That can’t happen, when the land is owned by thousands of individual people, who don’t live there. In order to get that land back, and build a dream city. The state would have to go to each individual owner, and buy it. And the owners are going to charge ridiculous prices. It can be done, but the state would have to pass new laws, that say a livable house or building has to be build on the land you own, or you forfeit that land.

Eventually but not anytime soon. Scenario #1: Unless a big company moves in which creates jobs. People go where the jobs go. then restaurants will pop up and gas stations then hotels, then houses. Scenario #2: if oceans truly do keep rising from global warming most of LA, OC etc will be under water n this land is prime for that if you can wait 50-100 years

Imagine going there buying your dream home as a young man, fast forward 40 years later, you're old and wasted your life in a dessert town still waiting for the big city that never came. In L.A. your friends and family are bragging who much their home is worth now.
@austindreher2791 Жыл бұрын
Ok but how much are Mortgage.s of said homes. And how loud is the city?? Yeah I grew up there. The town has grown A LOT. When my Mom was a kid the ONLY school the town had was the Elementary school. She had ,like all the kids, to go to Mojave for Middle school and High school. Cal City now has a Middle and a High School

@@austindreher2791 I was from a small town too so I know what it's like. What I found was big city has more opportunities which I.couldn't get in a small town. Mine town went from 25k to 50k in population but still you don't have whole bunch of jobs.
@austindreher2791 Жыл бұрын
@@mteevie1609 I understand that. My Mom thinks of Cal City as a place in the middle of nowhere but in the middle of Everything. Why? Because you go to Hwy 14 you're two hours for LA go to Hwy 58 and your five hours for Vegas. But you're right you may have to travel for week. I do miss Cal City and the desert though

I remember hunting that desert in the 60's with my father during "rabbit years" when the vector control folks would pay a bounty for jack rabbit ears. Boxes of .22 ammo !!! Rabbits so thick you had to kick them to shoot them. Overpopulation of rabbits one year led to overpopulation of Coyotes the next years. We laughed telling the state people that the best hunting was "so-and-so" street LA!!
@austindreher2791 Жыл бұрын
You should of been in Cal City when the City decided to kill more than half of Coyote population in the mid 80's. Couldn't go five feet with almost hitting a few rabbits.

I notice commenters here often compare California City to Los Angeles, and that seems odd to me. California City doesn't need to be the next Los Angeles. If you compare California City with it's surrounding cities, Tehachapi and Ridgecrest, you will see that California City needs to "clean it's self up". Too many blighted properties, but I understand many people live here to enjoy the freedom to do whatever they want on their property, and the city allows that.

Hmmm... If this place would have facilities that would specialize in helping/counsel the homeless and support those who need/want to get their lives back in order and into society, provide a mixture of voluntary and paid work; this place could potentially be their saving grace. The CA cities have very few solutions that worked long term, sometimes relocating outside of the hostile environment and into a new one is their best option for a better future. If all of the able/willing homeless were transported, provided shelter/counseling/education; they could populate the area and create a community with local businesses and jobs in agriculture, maintenance, infrastructure, supplies, medical, etc..

This sounds like a pipe dream and location looks ugly. Building a small town in a desert. The facts speak for itself, there is no economy that exists to support a development for housing. The economy comes first, then you build homes. Not the other way around. That’s how a city fails. Look at Detroit, a city build on debt. Community’s are built organically, otherwise they collapse. That’s why you can find videos of ghost towns of Chinese developers pipe dream utopias. You can’t support developments without a productive work force and job creators.
