Beyond words! I wish I could be more articulate to express how tbk touched my soul when I first read it. Since then emerged in me this love to humanity and the desire to fight this mental war that we all face inside. And now this adaptation has added this touch of passion, intensity but also delicacy. I don't think any other production can reach the level of spiritual connection.

This masterful dramatization makes me want to read the book again. Not having seen the full three-part treatment, I am struck immediately by the inspired casting -- the old Fyodor Karamazov is a superb realization of the old rascal of the novel, and he delivers his lines with utter conviction. Ivan is overly intellectual; Dmitry is a bull; Ivan is innocent. And Smeryakov, Smerdyakov is a perfect snake.

I just finished watching War and Peace. That is a very different world compared to the one depicted in "The brothers Karamazov". And that difference, in my view, reflects the changes in Russian society. By the time the latter was published, Alexander II had ascended the throne, abolished serfdom in Russia, and reorganized the judicial system, opening the courts to public audiences and, separately, granting greater freedom to the press. All of which were reflected in "The brothers Karamazov".

Живу в Сибири, в городе, где Ф.М. Достоевский отбывал каторгу. Это мой самый любимый писатель. Практически все герои его произведений не выдуманные, а реальные люди, которым он часто оставлял реальные имена. За всеми его великими произведениями стоят реальные истории, которые ему рассказывали каторжане. Для меня Ф.М. Достоевский великий писатель, христианин, мыслитель, психолог и пророк. Нет никого, кто бы мог с ним сравниться.

After reading Notes From Underground, I see more clearly Katerina’s infatuation with Dmitri. She is in ‘love’ because she was insulted, so she needs to get back at him, to subjugate or tyrannise Dmitri so she is the more dominant, the nobler one. Good film series, just that foreigners would probably look more at the subtitles than watch the actual picture.

Maybe the densest novel I"ve ever read. I really recommend the Avsey translation but it's fun to read the different versions. Look forward to watching this adaptation.

Who is Avsey and where to find the translation?
@EscapeCondition

@@gaHuJIa_Macmep The full name is Ignat Avsey, not sure where to find it but I got mine at the last bookstore in La basically some of the translations are easier to read so it probably depends on if you're a purist or are more focused on English flow (which is my leaning)

I think the director should have added some narration for context. It would help to understand the plot better. I haven't read the book and I find it difficult to understand what is going on. Well I don't think that it was made for an international audience.

the last dialogue in this episode makes my hair stand on end everytime BC nobody in fiction has spoken with words that describe my own "truth of life" thesis better than Ivan in that moment, not one with more real passion, (incredible acting btw from Ivan's actor and everybody else). (Ps : apart from "everything is permitted" part, I believe paradise and hell is found in other people and we should all care not out of duty but BC that's the only way for everyone including ourselves, to live happy. Make eachother happy.)

Does anyone know if the translations from Russian to English in the subtitles are pretty accurate? Thanks!

Нет конечно. Вы получаете только общий смысл диалогов, ибо невозможно перевести все нюансы русского языка на другие языки в субтитрах. Например Война и Мир Толстого переводится, как War and Peace. Но в русском языке слово "мир" имеет и значение мироздание, вселенная , человечество.

Not a Russian speaker here but I had always wondered if the name Smerdyakov was also a play on the Russian word "smrt". (Pardon the oversimplified transliteration).
@vladspb1861

@@steveschmidt5156 В старом русском языке есть слово "смерд"(smerd) , так раньше называли людей низкого происхождения, занимавших самую низкую ступень на социальной лестнице. Сейчас это слово не употребляется. От этого слова в русском языке есть много производных слов, например "смердить", то есть плохо пахнуть, вонять. Я не филолог, но предполагаю, что слово Смерд (smerd) связано со словом Смерть (smert), ибо по смыслу смерть связана с плохим запахом .
