‪@hollywoodguns‬ Browning Hi Power from Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley’s Iconic 9mm
Description
"Welcome back to HollywoodGuns! I’m Wilson, and in this episode, we’re diving into the iconic Browning Hi-Power-the 9mm that wisecracking Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) carried throughout Beverly Hills Cop. Known for its smooth performance and high-capacity magazine, this piece became a perfect match for a street-smart Detroit cop, turning it into one of cinema’s most memorable firearms.
History & Legacy of the Browning Hi-Power
Discover the origins of this legendary 9mm and its journey from John Browning’s innovative mind to Dieudonné Saive’s finishing touches. Why did the Hi-Power become one of the world’s first reliable double-stack pistols? Find out how it earned its name and place in over 50 national militaries as one of the most widely used handguns in history.
Axel Foley’s Sidearm in Beverly Hills Cop
Why did Axel Foley-a maverick cop in the mid-1980s-opt for a semi-auto 9mm over the typical revolver? In a world of revolver-carrying cops, Foley’s Browning Hi-Power stood out, offering high capacity and reliability that a streetwise detective could depend on. I’ll share insights on what made this gun so unique for a Hollywood role, and how its subtle look added to Foley’s rogue persona.
Key Browning Hi-Power Variants
Did you know that not all Browning Hi-Powers are the same? We’ll go over four key FN models that defined the series, from the early GP35 and Mark I to the Mark III assembled in Portugal. If you’re a collector, you’ll appreciate the differences in design, quality, and collector value-like my 1972 C-series model.
On-Screen Accuracy
How well did Hollywood portray the Hi-Power in Beverly Hills Cop? I’ll break down the action scenes, Foley’s real-world accuracy, and the gun’s impact power. From close-quarters shootouts to some surprising reloading moves, Foley’s use of the Hi-Power gets top marks. But did Hollywood make any creative changes to its portrayal? I’ll reveal where they got it right-and where they stretched reality!
The Browning Hi-Power in Other Movies
With over 150 movie credits, this pistol didn’t stop at Beverly Hills Cop! From classics like Serpico to modern action films like The Matrix, the Browning Hi-Power kept a high profile on screen. Want to know where else you can spot this legendary firearm? I’ll cover some standout roles and scenes you don’t want to miss.
Whether you’re a fan of action movies, military history, or classic cinema firearms, this episode has something for you. Make sure to LIKE, COMMENT, and SUBSCRIBE for more deep dives into Hollywood’s most iconic guns. Tell me which movie firearm I should feature next, and hit the bell icon so you don’t miss a single episode.
“Trust me, you’re going to love it!” Axel Foley.

I purchased a Hi-Power in the late 1980s when I was working in auto repossession. Excellent weapon. I sold the pistol to a gun shop in the late 90s after my mental health deteriorated to the point where I was contemplating turning it on me. My health has gotten much better since then, and the day may cone where I might consider owning one again.

For what it's worth... Indiana Jones carries a Browning Hi-Power twice in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." It's his sidearm during the shootout in the Raven bar in Nepal, and it's what he arms himself with when the ship carrying the Ark is stopped by the Nazi U-Boat.

They wanted him to use a 1911 at first since it was "the" American pistol and it would fit his character, however .45 caliber blanks were terrible to work with and was dropped in favor of the more reliable 9mm counterparts.

First handgun I ever fired was at age 10. A neighbor, a WWII veteran had a Wehrmacht P-35 at our local range. I thought it was so cool, with all the Wehrmacht markings. He brought it home as a war trophy, it was immaculate, no rust, dings or scratches. He said he took it from a German officer prisoner. He let me shoot it. It was heavy and big for my small hands, but the recoil was very manageable. Later that summer I met him again at the range and this time he had a Beretta Brigadier(father of the 92FS). It was very heavy and the recoil was more than the P-35. Wish I could afford to find a good P-35. Thanks for sharing this video.

My first police duty pistol when I was sworn in back in '91 was a Browning Hi-Power MKIII that I bought the year before to attend the police academy. We had to supply our own weapons back then, and while half of the department carried revolvers, two of us carried Brownings, and most of the rest carried 1911s. Even as other guns came along, I stayed qualified with it and used it on occasion as an Off-Duty piece or when I sent one weapon off to be refinished (salt water environment) or when my much loved SIG P220 bit the dust, etc. I still have it, still carry it on occasion and after a LOT of shooting (with a lot of +P+ rounds too) it still shoots very well. I just found your channel and subscribed. I love content like this!

I've got two of them. My father bought his in a PX in Saigon I think in 64, before I was born. He was a civilian contractor there, not in the military. He got too old and broken to use it but he wouldn't let go of it, so I bought my own in 1992 when I was 21. He passed in 99, so now I have two. I think my father paid around $60 for his from the PX, I paid I believe around $280 for mine back then. Both of them have the low profile, non-adjustable sights. My first firearm though, I bought a used S&W Stainless 4" 686 .357 on my 21st birthday. That was the first one that was truly "mine".

I want to own a Hi-Power one day, but my EDC pistol will probably always be a 1911 in .45. I like its grip, stopping power, and thin profile. However, the Hi-Power would likely be my second choice because it can be carried cocked and locked like a 1911. Browning was an absolute firearms genius.

Great gun, but... the hummer bites. It has stupid magazine disconnect that only makes trigger worse. Handle is somewhat short. The slider is too thin and may crack after some time... US Navy Seal a Teams used it a lot back before and during the 1st Gulf War. It handled that desert sand with no jambs. Never will go out of style and I saw some amazing shots with it from my brother who was in Team 5 for 17 years. I am short with smallish hands so didn't like the width of the grip but still have a couple double stack clones that I shoot pretty well just don't want to lug one around as a cc. I like pocket pistols like the Ruger single stacker 9mm's and hope that 8 rounds will get the job done. When in doubt, run!!!!!

I bought my Mark III in 1987. After readinf Frederick Forsyth's spy thrillers that thr British SAS used the Browninf HP, i just had to have one. Ive had it all through the Rodney King Riots in 1992 alonf with a Colt Givernment 1911 .45 auto. Years later in 2014 i had it tuned by Terry Tussey Gunsmithing. Then in 2016 i had it Cerakoted in two tone. But since Browning/FN announced they will no longer make the HP after 2018, i retired it. I then bought the Springfield SA35 in 2022. The improvements made by Springfield are greatly appreciated: enlarged safety, nice sights, CNC machined slides and frames so parts fit much tighter, one piece barrel, deleted the magazine disconnect for better trigger pull, deleted the firing pin block. So the Springfield is my shooter while the Browning has a well deserved retirement.

I love the scene in Serpico when Al Pacino purchases a Browning as his situation escalates. The gunsmith sneers, “…That takes a 14 shot clip; you expecting’ an army!?” to which Frank glibly replies…. “…No….just a division.” I laughed a Hell of a lot. There was an interview with Frank Serpico in the late 90’s and the interviewer commented that he still carried an automatic. I cannot be sure if it was a Brownjng HP.

You are so right, unlike the classic Hi Power, Hollywood is past its prime and has lost, or thrown away, its "mystique". For us "gun guys" the Hi Power in Beverly Hills Cop was one of the stars. Big John Wintergreen's (Robert Blake) Colt Python "Pinto" in Electra Glide In Blue and the Star pistols in the movie The Wild Bunch were also guns that captivated us. I also always wanted a S&W 5904 but never pulled the trigger on one so to speak, they are neat looking pistols as well and here in the states were a big leap forward for adopting the semi auto platform. Did I leave out sexy CZ and 1911 pistols, lol. So many great pistols from days of my youth. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pistols with us. I look forward to future installments.

It isnt as good as one or two around the same quality as three but feels good to watch because it is the guys together again and a lot of familiar jokes and scenes that make you smile. @@nomadmarauder-dw9re Somebody should have told the Canadians that their SOP was to carry with the chamber empty during the 20 years they were in Afghanistan and in Somalia with us back in the 90's. Because their pistols had one up the spout. Neither the Brit or Canadian weapons pam on the GP35 says anything about always carrying with the chamber empty. Certainly not the original one from WWII, nor the last ones published after Y2K. Don't mention Fairbairn either. I didn't carry it so I was less concerned about the safety issues. @@controlfreak1963 That "protégé" was a firearms genius in his own right whose designs included the FN49 and FN FAL. Like Browning, some of his best work was modifying and improving existing military weapons. He's also the one who created the original prototype by modifying the existing FN Model 1903; JMB wanted nothing to do with the project. JMB's two designs were striker fired, one being a blowback design - and both were swiftly rejected by the French. The patents can be found for viewing online: you won't see much in those two designs that resembles either the 1911 or the GP35.
