Another great informative and entertaining video. Sad how people had to work themselves so hard to just exist on the bare minimum and even less than the bare minimum.

The Edwardian Era wasn't all fun and games either. My ancestors paid £20 for transportation from England to Manitoba to be farmers. But when they got there, the plot of land was a treed, rocky and undeveloped prairie. But the ticket home was £400 so that was how my family came to Canada (and turned 160 acres of Manitoba into farmland).

Sounds like a better life than grinding urban poverty and then going to World War I. I am sure it was very hard work though. Even in the 1960s UK was exporting people to Australia (£10 Poms) to get them to settle and work parcels of land.

I was already aware of the Home Children sent to Canada, but I appreciate this video explaining that entire families were strongly encouraged to go by an adjacent philanthropic scheme. This sheds a whole new consideration on how my great great grandfather along with his family ended up here. He could very well have attended one of these union gatherings. Thanks!

In last 1890s grandmas grandparents took her mother and siblings to Winnipeg being there before the railroad. Crops failed they moved to flushing meadows new York where father was involved in a shooting accident and died so the family moved back to England and mama set up a shop in Epping forest where the hop picking London families were heading past. We still wonder how they never ended up in the workhouse

The Victorians sent people on a one way ticket to Canada? Before that the English sent their undesirables to America & when the colonists started to rebel the U.K. government then started to send undesirables to Australia but I never knew about the Victorians sending people to Canada until know. Thanks Fact Feast

Now people wish they could live in a place like Canada. They seem to take care of their people for the most part. I know some disabled people there and they get their rent paid and 1200 dollars extra to pay bills and eat. Not the greatest but seriously better than most countries.

A couple of my relatives were sent to Canada in the British Home Child Scheme. One on the ship Victoria leaving Liverpool on the 4th of April 1906 aged 13 and the other on 22nd April 1910 from Liverpool aged 15.

Thank you sir for your wonderful cultural documentary channel. I learned new vocabularies and new information with every video you are posting. Shipping is term used for communication to refer to desire or two characters often romantic relationships with each other. Honestly immigration is common in every countries for several years to seek knowledge, or better job opportunities , political refugees , asylum seeker because of security country situation. Actually and Australia both countries offer excellent opportunities and high standards of living, might be better choice for those who prefer more inclusive immigration policy and Multi cultural environment especially immigration to Canada. Many British expats can earn more money doing same jobs in Australia than they could at home , while minimum wages of each country are comparable, professionals can often secure better money . In reign of queen victoria ( 1837- 1900) marked period of growth change for Sydney, for New South Wales and Australia as whole . With arrival of steam ships and coast to coast trans Canada railway English increasingly sought agricultural opportunities to had in prairie provinces. Many people left England to Canada, most of them orphaned, abandoned, pauper children. ( majority of them are English) were given free passage to Canada .

Basically a miserable Victorian Era Version of The Hunger Games. Social problems and overpopulation of the poor were typically handled by the frequent nonsensical wars that happened on a regular basis throughout Europe and elsewhere that were perpetuated by squabbling Royal Families who were all related. When that wasn't enough, the prisons, slums and workhouses sent their excess numbers to the colonies as a social relief strategy to keep the population manageable and avoid widespread crime, hunger, homelessness and ultimately uprisings that would threaten the monarchy and social order of society. The various Monarchies learned an important lesson about keeping a wary eye on the social & economic conditions of their countries and their populations as they feared a repeat of the French Revolution. Even today governments are quick to intervene and provide relief in a poor economy to avoid widespread hunger, abject poverty and crime which could ignite widespread social unrest and anarchy. Of course wars and military campaigns continue without interruption, to provide a socially acceptable outlet as well.
