Question 1. Were they eachother's type? Ned tells us Robert wasn't her type because he's unfaithful. How would she think about Rhaegar if he was unfaithful to Elia? Question 2. Who did Rhaegar believe to be the focus if the prophecy? We are told he once thought he was, but then believed his son was. Dany further sees him tell Elia that Aegon's is the soiaf. Logically then who would Rhaegar believe needed to marry and have a baby with a Stark? The most logical answer is that Rhaegar believed Jace's pact of ice and fire needed to honored. However, he would need to arrange a marriage to a Stark for Aegon. Not only that, but he may also have wanted in on the alliance against Aerys. A betrothal between Lyanna's child and his own should knit that together. So, what happened and why? If Lyanna didn't love Robert, and was unlikely to fall for someone who'd leave his wife's bed, did Lyanna actually have someone she already loved? If she did what would happen? The more likely answer is that Lyanna became pregnant by the person she actually loved. Ned used his relationship with Ashara to convince Rhaegar to escort Lyanna to Starfall so she could give birth in secret and then return to marry Robert without risking the alliance. Why Starfall? Because Ned and Ashara could claim the baby and it could be raised as a trueborn Stark. The price? Ned or Lyanna would have to betroth one of their children to Aegon to fulfill his prophecy. This is a story where the things most people believe turn out to be wrong. Readers and characters argue over their relationship and ignore the more obvious subversion that there was no relationship. Rhaegar was just trying to help preserve Stark honor and prevent the alliance against his father from falling apart if Robert found out Lyanna wasn't a maid. All the evidence we have tells us Rhaegar believed Aegon rather than himself needed to fulfill the soiaf. How the R+L theory has survived Dany's vision in the HotU is actually fairly odd. Even Selmy underlining it is completely ignored.

This is mostly right: Furthermore, Rhaegar naming Lyanna Queen of Love and Beauty to honor her secret courage in standing up for Howland Reed as the Knight of the Laughing Tree is inspired by the novel and movie Ivanhoe where the knight Wilfred Ivanhoe names Rebecca (the Jew) Queen of Love and Beauty to honor her for raising money for King Richard the Lionhart’s cause secretly even though Ivanhoe loves a different woman, Lady Rowan. Later, Lyanna ran to Rhaegar to get away from being forced to marry Robert against her will. It’s a theme in Ivanhoe too as Lady Rowan is engaged by her father to the Saxon heir to the throne (Robert’s equivalent) against her wishes when she loves Ivanhoe. Only after Rhaegar had rescued Lyanna from Robert and they spent time together, that’s when they accidentally fell in love, at the same time that Rhaegar realized he needed to have a third baby with her to give Jon the magical powers of the Starks in addition to the magical power of the Targaryens. -A Theory of Ice & Fire on Quora
