The Schism of 1054 hadn't even taken place, neither did the Gregorian Reforms, which meant the Bishop of Rome didn't have that great overriding power until much later. Consider also for a moment that England was split into many different kingdoms, all poor in comparison to Frankia and Italy. There was no large wealth hoarding and conspiracy of administrations to hoard gold and treasures while everyone else starved. Look at the period through the eyes of it's contemporaries and not just raging over some imagination of Rodrigo Borgia.

Good video, but I think that as is often the case with these events the brutality of the Vikings is somewhat over stated. Yes, it was brutal, but there was no such thing as a nice, non-brutal raid, like "May I have all this valuable stuff?" "Oh yes, take what you want old chap, drop in again next time you're sailing by." No, everyone who raided somewhere used a degree of brutality, and the Vikings were hardly any worse than many others of their time. A Roman legion for example would have done exactly the same thing, and worse - Caesar slaughtered 40,000 people on one occasion in Gaul for rising up against Rome - and the Crusaders were often far more brutal than the Vikings, killing simply for the sake of it rather than as a help to raiding. The fear sent throughout a country by one brutal raid, like Lindisfarne, made the next raid easier, people would run away at the very sight of the dragon ships. The Saxons themselves, along with the Angles and Jutes, had done exactly the same thing a few centuries previously, when they drove the native British peoples westwards into Wales and Cornwall and became the Anglo-Saxons. Also the constant stressing of Viking raiding overlooks the fact that trading was of great importance to them, often more so than raiding, not every Norseman went raiding, and their other accomplishments, the greatest navigators, explorers and settlers of their day, founding settlements across Europe and often living quite peacefully along with those people they settled among, even converting to their religions, as happened very noticeably in Ireland, where they founded most of the principal towns and quite quickly began intermarrying with the native Irish, and they had a very democratic governmental system. and a far better treatment of women than most people of their time. They lived in a brutal age, but they were hardly any worse than other people of that time, they just did it more spectacularly, and it must be remembered that the accounts of them were written by monks and priests, about the only people able to read and write at that time, and also the most frequent targets of the vikings, so those accounts would naturally highlight brutality and make it sound as demonic as possible. To put it bluntly, the Vikings get a bad press, with everything about them tending to be overshadowed by raiding, which was simply one aspect of them, but the most graphic and headline-catching. After all founding a settlement, trading with other people and intermarrying isn't as gripping in it's entertainment value as bashing people's heads in with axes.
@robdavies822 жыл бұрын
It’s also believed that the raiders of Lindisfarne would have had no instruction from their land back home, and were merely bandits coming to take what they could. It was in later years that more established armies came over.
@robdavies822 жыл бұрын
Whilst little about the invasion is known, most of our knowledge of it today is put together piece by piece and assumption. It is believed amongst historians that the most likely part of the island that they would have landed would have been Sandham bay to the North. 2 reasons for this: one, it’s a sandy beach which meant they could bring their boats onto land, whereas the area around the priory side is quite rocky. It is believed there were 3 boats, which could carry up to 25 people. The 2nd reason being that it was easier to land whilst not being spotted. They could have then made their way in foot across the island and through fields until they reached their target. I also read somewhere that some local fishermen saw the boats coming but couldn’t warn them in time. Nobody knows how many died that day…or even if it was at daytime, there’s so few details. It’s quite likely some would have been taken back to Norway as slaves and for knowledge so that they could return again in for future raids.

Some of these comments are so absurd. Anyone with a family name remotely connected to Nordic or Scandinavian origins immediately assumes they are descents of Vikings, not even realising Vikings are not a "people", they're a specific class within Nordic peoples. It's like saying that because I'm British I'm immediately related to royalty (I'm not a Brit, though). Most likely the overwhelming majority of those who assume "my ancestors are Vikings", are just descendents of lowly farmers like the rest of continental Europeans. Indeed. Although the only reason the normans were Christians was an agreement made between the king of the francs and the Viking rolo but just before rolo died he ordered that all Christian prisoners in Normandy to be executed to show that he was a true Norseman and a follower of Odin. There’s no such thing a true Christian in my opinion most of them just wanted power

@baronzaebos88884 жыл бұрын
Perhaps more complex are the reasons behind their seemingly mindless brutality. Were the Vikings thinking in terms of their wider reputation? Did they want to be feared? Were they acting to appease their Gods? Namely Odin and Thor. Violence does seem to be a noble trait within their culture. Or did the Vikings have a personal disdain for Christianity? Perhaps all of the above played a part.

I was raised on these stories and have little doubt that they are basically correct. I do think sources should be listed for this kind of video and perhaps a few caveats...... we don't have Viking records to give their side of "event" and the more savage the better as far as Xian writers are concerned....they might be exagerating. And I think Lindisfarne might have been in some decline at this time.... following the transfer of the bishopric to York.

Monks would've just moved in from other monasteries and appointed a new abbot if all the monks there had been martyred. Technically they would have, like by then most of what had been under Roman control had been Christianized and the Pope acted like a kingmaker, so even if two kings went to war they'd 'try' to spare the church. (Unless your name was Henry VIII, you did not mess with the Church). The Vikings on the other hand were not Christians and just saw an easy target with loads of wealth inside and went: We will take that, thank you. There aren't. The oldest extant account was written 100 years after the event. (Which isn't to say there weren't older ones that have been lost to time.) The pious believed that God would protect them. Their faith was unshakable. But my 'belief' is,- is that it is unrealistic. When surrounded by danger, you build walls - you have a standing army. When the cold weather hits, regardless of 'imagery' - you break the furniture and build a fire. Unorthodox perhaps, but it's 'reality'. Faith I understand. 'Faith' I understand. It's the nonsensical reaction or response to either I object to. If this be not the 'practice' or reaction or response to faith for you personally, - that's fine.
