The BSA Gold Star has finally arrived!
60 years after the Gold Star ceased production, can BSA recreate that old magic to become a worl beater onceagain?
And how does it compare to the Royal Enfield Interceptor and to a lesser extent, the Triumph Bonneville T100?

Takes me back to 1973 when I was 17. My best friend owned a Gold Star and we had been for a swift half (just the one, officer) with me riding pillion. He stopped at the trafiic lights and I was totally relaxed and day dreaming. As he pulled away, I rocked gracefully backwards and if it wasn't for my feet lodging in his armpits, I would have been left sitting in the road! Happy days. Another great review, Freddie.

Freddie, I’ve watched about 6 reviews of the Gold Star that came ahead of yours, including the MF, but only now do I have a proper feel for what this bike is all about. It’s not just about the specifications or the nuts and bolts, it’s all about the feelings and the sense of occasion that the bike invokes when you ride it. The modern retro motorcycles are more like lifestyle accessories than just modes of transport and no one puts that point across better than you. There’s basically nothing wrong with any of them; it comes down to how they make you feel. Another great start to my Sunday morning, thank you Freddie & Monica.

Hello, from Yosemite. Back in the early 80'had a late 60's BSA. Don't recall the year, but I do recall the tank was all chrome, with the badge, of course. Anyhow, I'm a little over halfway through your video, wanted to post that.... because of you, I'm gonna get one! Had no idea they were out (I do think you may have made a comment on one of you're other vids.. possibly). Just got my 442 Rocket, was gonna grab the new KZ you posted about not too long ago buuuut...think it's gonna be this BSA, LOVE the tank/badge! It's old new! Thank you Freddie and Monika!

@@FreddieDobbs Of all the bikes I've owned, original ones, the BSA was the most unique. However, the BSA was only compared to Harley, Triumph, KZ 900/100, Kawa GPZ 550, Honda 550 Four. Now, had I had a Norton, Ariel Square Four, Matchless, woulda been different. But, yes I'm thrilled the BSA is here!

Great video, Freddie, as always! Love how you focus on the emotional ‘feel’ the bike gives you - for me, that’s the key to motor biking. It’s the way a bike makes you feel that’s most important, not the stats and figures, or where it’s made. Well done and keep it up!

Thanks for a great review. BSA bicycles were legendary in my native country.. Then I experienced the RE Bullet, a classic British design in India. I toured extensively in India on modern Japanese bikes 'cause I did not trust the old Bullet to let me down somewhere deep in the Indian countryside. I think your cinematography beautifully captures the nostalgia these retro bikes have come to represent. Hopefully I can rent this BSA when I visit the Himalayas next.

Royal Enfield and Triumph sell thousands of bikes a year and BSA at the moment just have a few demo bikes going around. Looks like a great bike but only time can tell what these bike are like once they get some real miles on them. I’ll wait for long term owner reviews before I decide to put my money on a bike that still has no track record on reliability and after sales service. If I was buying a bike today I’d put my money on more established brands with years of production, history, and service I can research and study. In the past 2 years I’ve owned a Himalayan that has its share of problems and currently own a Street Twin that hasn’t been trouble free. That being said BSA would seem like a huge risk with just their first production bike in decades. As always I enjoy the content Freddie. Stay safe and keep ‘‘em coming. Cheers

We mustn’t conflate this BSA brand with the original, unlike RE there is no BSA DNA in this brand, it’s only marketing. Like you, I await user reviews and RE’s response; I’d love to see a RE 650 Classic single but realise that’s wishful thinking and it’ll more likely use their twin but it is top heavy.

I was in the market for a new bike earlier this year, this and the Interceptor were two on my list. With all the confusion surrounding the Gold Star I eventually bought a Street Scrambler to go alongside my 76 Bonneville. I love the way you approach the review, about how it makes you feel riding it, way more important than performance stats. Same with my bikes, it’s all about the vibe. I’ll test ride one in the spring (it’s winter here now in the Austrian Alps and snow, ice and salted roads are the order of the next months!) Have lurked on your channel for a while but really enjoyed this review, keep it up fella!

Hello Freddie, The last BSA Goldstar Built by BSA was in 1972 and it was a 500 B50ss Goldstar. Admittedly Not the DBD variant but that was the last time BSA used the name Goldstar and they ceased production in 1973. A friend of mine in Detroit Michigan has got a 1963 BSA Goldstar DBD 500 Still in it's crate and it's brand new and must be the only one in existence. I can send you photo's if you wish to see it. I like BSA's and i have just bought a 1970 BSA 650 Firebird Scrambler with the hi level pipes and i think the power output would be similar to the new Goldstar. I think the bike you are road testing is £6,800-00 as is the black one and the silver one with the silver mudguards. The bike in highland green is £6.500-00 and the legacy edition is £7;000-00 and it is silver with chrome mudguards and handlebars and polished cases. A good report and an enjoyable watch. Thumbs up. Cheers.

Great looking bike! I love this style of motorcycles and the smaller displacement engines.

i didn’t realize until watching your video that single cylinder is HUGE. i knew it would be large being a 650 single but my god it looks cool

The dials and needle movement……They still swing clockwise but from a 1 o’clock position….🤔. The effect is one of those mind bending illusions 😉

I have a carbed BMW F650 and an FI F650CS. The Rotax 650 single is a very capable engine which has character and flexibility in a very reliable package. I would say between the RE and the BSA,if I was buying, I would check both out and go with the one that speaks to me and have no regrets going forward.

What i love about your video is that you understand that a bike can't be summarised or reviewed too objectively, like people review cars!! it's more of a personal experience! A bike may lack every feature necessary but if it has the character the rider is looking for then it's the perfect bike! 👍

I absolutely loved the style and presentation of this video. Nicely filmed, good sound quality, and all the relevant questions answered. It took me back, in ways, to some great times in the 70's, when smoking wasn't the social crime it has become today. As the saying goes, everything in moderation. (Actually, I was part-owner of a BSA 500 single some years back, but that's another story.)

If there is a Kawasaki to compare it to, it should be the W800!😃 Another bike you could review is the Yamaha SCR 950. Would love to hear your thoughts on it!

Going to have to calm myself down after Freddy's detailed description of the ride. My hearts going Pitta Patter Pitta Patter. Joking aside, I will add that this is genuinely the best bike review, and a "should i buy' video I have ever seen, I stuck to the end, and I'm not even in the market for this bike!

I was waiting for your review for last few days and finally it is here. Yes, this bike is just a classic styles bike and everything in it might now b mind blowing but its right and reasonable. It will take some time for the BSA to pick up market and distinguish its own category and customers.

I subscribe to a lot of bike channels and the majority of them tend to follow more or less the same reviews format and I think people do notice that you take a different approach that doesn’t require drones and multiple on-board camera angles
