The Buffalo Bills are a team that never stops fighting, no matter what. Being a lifelong resident of Buffalo, the Bills are a reflection of the city they live in. There is absolutely no quit in the 716, and the players who have played here through the lean years have witnessed that mindset during every frigid home game. The fans show up to cheer on their team regardless of what the world, league, or climate puts in front of them as obstacles. The #BillsMafia is a force of nature that is entirely unstoppable...

It really took A LOT of years for fans to appreciate just how impressive that run was. At the time droves of fans were annoyed the AFC was “letting” this happen. Especially as a kid, where a couple seasons feels like decades. I’m glad I got to see the entire arch of that story.
@DolFan3163 жыл бұрын
The rest of the AFC DID let it happen. Even the early '70s Dolphins and mid-late '70s Steelers never reached four straight Super Bowls. The mighty Belichick-Brady Pats somehow didn't even pull this off despite getting a free pass to the conference title game 8 straight seasons! The Bills not only got to one because a team choked away a 35-3 lead, they won another playoff game 10-7 on a DEFENSIVE score by someone named Carlton Bailey who even most Bills fans never heard of.
@John-ct9zs Жыл бұрын
The AFC of most of the 80s and 90s was lagging behind the NFC, it was so bad it wasn't funny. People would call the NFC championship game the real Super Bowl and the big game just a victory lap for the NFC team. Those years from 1984 to 1997 were just BRUTAL for the AFC until Elway and the Broncos finally broke through, and then you had the Brady/Patriots years. I don't think that kind of power shift will ever happen again. The AFC had their runs where they were stacked in the 1970s and again in the 2000s, but they never had a crazy 13 year run of dominance over the NFC like the NFC just did with the AFC.
@corey22324 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, the Bills were the 2nd most winningest team of the 90's (behind the 49ers). Growing up in VA, everyone was Redskins fans in my family, but I couldn't help but love the Bills. The Music City "Miracle" was the only game I've watched where I legit cried, followed by a 17 year playoff drought was just horrible...but I'm still proud to be a Bills fan, even having never lived in Buffalo!

Having lived in Buffalo/Western New York for most of my life, this video just barely scratched the surface as to why there is such a connection between the city/region and the Bills, and why Bills fans are so loyal. It's hard to believe now, but at one time Buffalo, NY was one of the largest cities in the United States, with both a booming steel industry and manufacturing. But when the factories went, so did most of the population and the people were down on themselves. The AFL Bills were a powerhouse that infused life and pride into the region, and when the late 80's/early 90's Bills came along, that pride was restored. If there was one team that was a perfect reflection of its community, the Bills would be it. For those years the hope that the Bills brought made Buffalo a place to be proud of once again. Yes they lost four Super Bowls, but they got to four straight. That sense, even during the drought and all the years of losing to the Patriots, never went away. When Terry and Kim Pegula bought the Bills from the estate of the late Ralph Wilson, the amazing outpouring of love they got was beyond genuine. And what we're seeing as Bills fans right now has left many, if not most of us, sensing that we're on the verge of something great. This year's team is the first in nearly 25 years that I have been even remotely close to being as excited about as I was for those Super Bowl teams. But here's one more thing your video missed out on: many of those players from those teams still call Western New York home. Jim Kelly especially, for someone who chose Houston over Buffalo initially, is a major part of the community to this day. He's as much of an ambassador of Western New York as the Goo Goo Dolls and chicken wings.

I about wore out Madden 92, but always ended up playing with the Eagles. Loved playing with that stacked defense - Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown, Seth Joyner, Wes Hopkins, Eric Allen. Blitzing like a maniac nearly every play. Playing their offense was a hell of a challenge though. Basically run for your life with Cunningham and pray that Fred Barnett got open. Lot of low-scoring games...

It goes against conventional football wisdom to handoff during a two minute drill. But on that final drive, Kelly completed two passes for just ten yds, whereas Thurman ran twice for 33 yds. The Giants defense was playing the pass all day, and even more so on the last drive. If Kelly would've handed it off to Thomas a few more times instead of either scrambling himself (he was not exactly a running QB) or attempting short throws underneath, that kick is probably attempted from less than 40 yds.

In a 1993 issue of The Sporting News (Feb or March. After they lost to Dallas the first time), I think it was Chris Mortensen who wrote something about how the Bills should trade away either Jim Kelly or Thurman Thomas. I agree. Not only should they have traded Thomas, but they should have traded away Andre Reed, Don Beebe, and Darryl Talley. They needed a little retooling at that point.

The real story was the wolfpit that was the late 80s-early 90s NFC East which sadly coincided with Buffalo's rise. There was also was the sad state of the AFC East, as the Bills were practically given a free 6-8 games against really poor competition. Yeah, the Bills hung with the Giants, but they got beat down every other time. By the time the power in the NFC changed (Niners, the rise of Favre), the Bills were old, expansion was on the horizon, the AFC got better and the Patriots hit their stride under Parcells in the AFC East (so did the Jets). After a brief glimmer of hope under Flutie, the Bills were rendered irrelevant until the Josh Allen era. Just think of the QBs that went through there during the dark days: Collins, Hobert, Losman, a washed Bledsoe, Manuel, Fitzpatrick and Peterman to name a few.

The only Super Bowl the Bills had a chance of winning was the first one against the Giants. I have never blamed Scott Norwood for the loss because it shouldn't have come down to that. The Bills had their opportunities to put the game away. 1. They failed to score a TD after James Lofton's 61 yard reception. That gave them first and goal at the 8 yard line but were forced to settle for the game tying field goal. 2. Jeff Hostetler somehow hung onto the football despite Bruce Smith grabbing his wrist in the end zone. The Bills did get two points for a safety but a TD there might have put the game away. 3. On 3rd and 13 on the Giants first drive of the 2nd half Mark Ingram broke four tackles to get a first down. If they had stopped them there they would have had to kick a field goal instead of scoring the go ahead TD. 4. On 3rd and 1 at the 19 yard line with less than two minutes left Thurman Thomas took the hand off and gained 22 yards. It was the Bills only 3rd down conversion of the game. On the run Giants DB Everson Walls makes an incredible open field tackle. If Thurman breaks that tackle he would have been gone and would have scored the game winning TD. That would have spared Scott Norwood of a lifetime of ridicule. 5. But the thing that is most ridiculous that no one remembers is that when the Bills stopped the Giants on 3rd down with 2 : 33 left the Bills allowed 13 seconds to tick off the clock before calling a timeout. 13 seconds! If the Bills had those extra 13 seconds Jim Kelly could have ran another play and gotten Norwood closer. Washington and Dallas were better teams, the Bills had no chance against them.
