The Bull Moose Called Grumpy But He Was Anything But That
Moose & Coffee with Grumpy. We fully realize we are right in the middle of this year’s rut and you want to see what is going on now, but thank you for your patience as we try to balance the hiking, filming, and production. All will be revealed, and it will be fun!
For anyone new to our page/channel…Grumpy will always be our “Mascot.” We met him in 2017 and spent five amazing ruts with him through 2021. Early in the rut in 2022 he and another huge bull fought to their deaths.
For today, we just want to remember him, enjoy him, and be proud of him. This clip is from 2021, on September 24 that year 28 inches of snow fell in one quick storm.
Let’s take a closer look… At one minute into this video notice all the scrapes and scars on the left side of his body. This bull was a fighter, many bulls are but this guy was a warrior. The next thing to watch for is at 2:07 seconds you can see on his left antler that his royal tine (it’s the one after the front brow tines that is long and has that slightly circular curve) is intact! Look at the other side and notice that one is missing. He broke it off along with part of his paddle that year.
It is with gratitude and humility that we share this video and memory of Grumpy. Don’t watch it with sadness, enjoy it, and celebrate his life and all he contributed to the area he lived. Back to this year’s rut tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.

Beautiful scenery, and Grumpy is a magnificent bull,but seeing that made me wonder if they have a hard time finding food in the Winter.

You bring up a great point with this comment. Moose try to tank up before winter, bulls are at a disadvantage because they lost weight during the rut. Winter browse is hard to survive on, they eat alot of dead twigs, and they strip bark from trees as well. An adult moose can lose hundreds of pounds during winter and they replenish in Spring.

@@MooseManNaturePhotos Thank you for your reply. I never thought about their food source until I saw Grumpy eating those dried up twigs. I guess that's why you always see them eating when everything is lush and green. They instinctively know they have to beef up for what's ahead.

Terry Go to our video section and scroll back two years....Grumpy was beloved. In 2022 he got into a fight and both bulls died, we documented his life extensively. The logo you see here to the left of my comment is him!

Hi there, definitely battle scars, he is missing a main tine on his right antler too, he died a year later in a fight. he was a warrior.
