Big Alaska Bull Moose Fighting -Start to Finish!
Left Hook finally returned to the valley and planted himself in 22's territory. We could see 22 a half mile away, bedded. He got up and started his slow/deliberate walk, grunting the whole way, audible across the valley despite the raging creek waters. He turned and headed up toward us, we knew Left Hook was somewhere in the hemlocks after a cow, but were waiting in a clearing in case he came out again. 22 started wagging from downhill, and then from the hemlocks came Left Hook, also wagging. Left Hook stopped to rake, and we knew this could erupt.
After jockeying for (SAFE) positioning, we were able to capture this amazing footage from two slightly different angles. It's the kind of thing one tends to watch a few times to appreciate the power and nuances as these massive animals go at it. The fur does fly. Enjoy!
Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

You are so right. t never ceases to amaze us how few serious injuries occur with these fights. We've witnessed several, known for a couple of injuries (eye, leg) but nothing that took a life. (We did not witness the tragic fight this year between Grumpy and the mystery bull, and are glad for that.) Want to keep ti that way! I've read that given the amount of energy it takes for these big boys to fight and the serious damage they can do to each other, such fights are usually over pretty quickly with one bowing out rather than taking it to an extreme. Usually no one is badly hurt. This proves the theory. Aren't they absolutely magnificent?

@MooseManNaturePhotos
@MooseManNaturePhotos Жыл бұрын
It's true, they really aren't out to kill one another, just best the other. It's all about mating rights. That is the only reason they fight. It's rare that death occurs. There can be lockups that will kill both bulls but that's not their intent; that's a freak thing. And the bull that spins out or calls uncle is allowed to leave without a chase. It is respected. Sometimes they are more civilized than humans. Thanks very much for the comment, you're so very right, Cindy!

I was glad to see them both walk away and live to fight another day. It looks to me like there is plenty of land out there for both of them to have their very own territory without a fight to the finish. They really are magnificent creatures! I love watching the video of the man who takes his trash out to the shed and when he turns around a HUGE moose is walking toward him. He immediately goes back in the shed and shuts the door and the moose stands there and waits for him to come out for just a few minutes and then goes on about his business. I have watched that video a dozen or more times.

They usually do walk away, thankfully Maryann, otherwise I'd not want to film a fight! And while bulls do tend to keep to a particular area, t's not about territory they fight over, it's the cows. So wherever the cows go, the bulls want to be. In this instance the younger bull had some cows in the older bull's area, because the older bull had wandered another mile and some away for other cows. It gets crazy out there. And I saw that video too, of the guy and the shed. Funny stuff! Thanks for watching!!

Well said, Danny. The genetically strong, not just a physical trait. The wise ones survive. We have been fortunate enough to follow some of these animals for several years and it's not just brawn that carries the genetics forward. I can't imagine how our ancestors carved out a life in such unforgiving climates and lands but they did. Just as these animals do, I guess. But now, with the urban sprawl, it's a matter of who has the bigger gun. Not quite what nature intended!

So very true brother, I've been in some very rugged and unforgiving country In my 68 years, and for some reason I always thought about the early settlers and humans who came before me in the very same spot I was standing. As an ex-veteran and many life experiences from one end of the spectrum to the other, reading the territory and quietly listening to your senses will bring you much life sustaining wisdom. Humans are very dangerous animals when you boil it right now, they can act without any discernment or forethought. The Truly dangerous ones function primarily on emotions, If you are able to quiet yourself and psychologically secure your wisdom In your actions, that in and of itself is beyond Powerfully strong and will always put you ahead of the game. Sometimes it's not the biggest gun brother, a well-placed 22. Can be life altering. Always keep your personal protection tools on you at all times, stay vigilant, be discernible in your hesitation, sometimes hesitation will ruin your day. You're right, TK. The Yukon subspecies is the largest of the 4 major subspecies of moose. The next is the northeast moose, then BC/northwest, then the Rockies moose. They are still all VERY large and formidable animals though! And you never want to insult a cow! Thanks for the comment and for watching!

In the past we have indeed felt the tundra shake to the rumble of two behemoths going at it. Just amazing. We never know if it's actually going to end up in a brawl; at times even these two seemed more like they were going to spar than fight. But this year Left Hook has come to his own and wanted all in.
