On the peak of Mount Kyaiktiyo is a mind-bending Buddhist monument: a 25-foot rock that balances precariously on the edge of a cliff.

It's been there more than two thousand years because the hermit met the Buddha and given a strain of hair. Actually there were two hermit brothers. People believe the stone was in the air. They believe, as the stone is floating in the air, a string can be pulled under it. It was inaccessible or hardly accessible for hundreds of years till recently.

You must be a Hindu. I am a Burmese, a Buddhist. We are closer together in terms of religious beliefs than any other. Even Chinese Buddhism doesn't even come close to our Theravada. Your story is right. But I don't think it happened while Buddha was still alive. But it did have 2 strains of his hair. That's why it is so precious and so much history rested in this pagoda. I posted my comments above for some non-believers

You can read the history book of that pagoda. You can even order it online I think. The Buddha visited the place and two ascetics visited Him. There they met and the Buddha gave them His hair. Also read the history of Shwe Tagon. Pagoda.

Fun fact. This site was closed for a time during the 1990's. During that time the Burmese government was busy drilling a 6 inch diameter hole through the rock and piling a large metal pole into it and the ground below to keep it in place.

@ Jesse Golden, I am from Burma. I actually had been there, only once unfortunately. The pagoda on top of that stone had been there for hundreds of years. It is just that people don't know about it, partly because the country just opened to the world for access. The locals in the area are not Burmese. Long time ago, a group of locals didn't like that fact that people had been visiting the area due to the pagoda. So they decided to push it over the cliff and they DID try (with ropes, some pulled down from cliff below). I heard what happened to them but I wouldn't mentioned it here. Anyway, I urge you visit there if you have a chance. You can literally push-release-push-release-repeat the stone and the stone will move but it will never fall. @ Cooper Carr, yes something anchoring it. But you wouldn't be able to see it. It is invisible anchor. Once again, don't just take my word for it. Go there and visit to see it with your own eyes

Not defying gravity, its all Physics the rock is balanced, as so that friction from the mountain edge keeps it from sliding, it is called "Static Friction" meaning that more force needs to be applied on the rock in order to move it, which would then turn into "Kinetic Friction" Friction is bondage between particles on objects at molecular levels, so the bondage between the rock particles and mountain particles is super strong, hence keeping the rock balanced But since the rock is right on the edge, tilted at an angle, there is "Gravitational potential Energy" on the rock, think of this as an apple hanging on the tree, when an apple is hanging, it has "Gravitational Potential Energy", meaning, it has the potential to fall down, and eventually, if someone applies some pressure on the apple, it does fall down in the same way, the force of Gravity is constantly pulling down on the rock, creating potential energy for the rock to eventually fall down once the force of gravity overcomes the "Static Friction", which may take a long time unless some one pushes just hard enough to release that potential energy, and let gravity then easily pull down on the rock, making the rock slide on the mountain edge, which is kinetic friction

it isn't defying the laws of gravity. the structure constructed on top helps it balance and the reason why it hasn't tipped over yet is due to it's enormous weight which makes it very hard to simply push. A beautiful sight nevertheless.

That is not the kind of rock I would be able to rest my head on. Salute to people that trust God for His support and have confidence that that thing will never shake or crash. That is called true faith. Alas, I lack it. Nice looking pagoda and rock. Nice story too. I cannot understand the depth of someone wanting to have a temple on top of their hair strand. If I was that hermit, chances are I wud have left Him then & there for asking me to do ridiculous things, kind of like Gideon's story in the Bible.

If this is naturally occurring then probably just that the center of gravity of the rock lies on the cliff, while the coefficient of friction of the rock and the base is high enough to not move from natural forces. It can also be that the rock isn't uniformed in material, but more dense towards the base side, rather than the cliff side. If it's not natural then there's a ton of ways you can connect the rock with the base. It's not that hard to do something like this. I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt and that the Burma government had a professional engineer look at it to make sure that it is safe and won't roll down the cliff in a few decades.

+Geni-us Aggregait in simple terms the friction coefficient describes the amount of energy or force it would take to break the physical contact or friction between 2 objects... think of the brakes on your car the amount of force it takes the calipers to create enough friction between the brake pads and the discs to stop the car, now imagine the car is stopped and the brakes are locked... the amount of force it would take to get the wheels to turn even with the brakes locked... that would be the friction coefficient...
@zaiks0105
@zaiks0105 8 жыл бұрын
Here is food for thoughts from the perspective of Physics... As you can see in the video, there is only a few surface area of contact between the stone and the underlying cliff. In fact, you can even rock/see-saw the stone by pushing and releasing. It will move/rock but will never fall. Yea, I take it. You wouldn't believe it. I've been there once more than 20 years ago. The pagoda has been there for hundreds of years. But you DO believe in environmental corrosion, windy conditions, earth quakes, right? If it were to fall, it should already been done long time ago. It didn't. @WHO9119, the monument/pagoda sitting on top will **add** the likeliness to the fall. How can that be a counter-weight? Besides, if you look at the base, the base is sloping **towards** the cliff, not flat, not the other way. :) I urge you to go visit there if you can, now that the country is partial democratic and partial junta-military. Suu Kyi became the president some months ago.
