It sounds like a bad dream - the nightclub is on fire and when you reach the exits, they're locked.
"The Stardust fire was a fatal fire which took place at the Stardust nightclub in Artane, Dublin, Ireland in the early hours of 14 February (Valentine's Day) 1981. Some 800 people had attended a disco there, of whom 48 died and 214 were injured as a result of the fire. The club was located where Butterly Business Park now lies, opposite Artane Castle Shopping Centre."

As a firefighter with 37 years under my belt, I learned early that the only way safety regulations are changed is someone with money has to be hurt or people must die!!! Sad realization but very true. That’s why I always erred on the side of caution. I pushed every chance I had for more training and more strict rules and regulations!!!

My university had a large bar on campus, capable of holding several hundred people. I remember one night, someone got kicked out and, out of spite, pulled the fire alarm on their way out. Instantly the music shut off, the house lights came up and the signs over the fire exits began flashing. At the time, we were all annoyed our night had been spoiled. Then The Station nightclub fire happened two weeks later, and we realized we were lucky our club had such safety measures in place.

Only 48? Those 48 have family and friends, not only did they loose their lives, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, extended family and best friends lost them. That’s well over 200 people affected much likely significantly more.. Those in the fire who survived have life long ptsd and it’s far from easy let me tell you that. Every single person in that building except those who caused the safety violations have a right to compensation of a significant sum, especially those who lost family that night. Another demand that needs to be met is that insurance that was paid to the owners needs to be retracted and paid out to the victims. They deserve to be out of pocket.

Same thing happened in the Philippines. The ozone Disco incident. Its more horrifying. There were 162 victims, most are highschools and college students attending for graduation parties. There was a electrical short circuit that caused sparks and smokes but the patrons thought it was only an effect set by the DJ, but in fact it was the caused of the fire. The patrons tried to flee but the guards locked the exits because they thought a fight is going on inside the club. After the fire was extinguished, they discovered a pile of dead bodies a waist high blocking the exit, they might be trying to flee. It was the worst fire incident in Philippine history. Until now, the building is abandoned and the fire marks are still present. Some say the building is haunted, some reports seeing people with burnt flesh screaming for help, and some saw the building is glowing with fire at night.

@@pastorpresent7774 its more likely to be the colour gels they put in the lights than the bulbs themselves (remember, this was before colour changing LEDS), bulbs use noble gasses for a reason. I would imagine that some of the chemicals in the store room would react badly with those particular types of plastics if they came into contact (or leaked fumes that came into contact) with each other and while the gels are designed to withstand a certain amount of heat, given enough time and heat they will eventually melt (I’ve seen some on the verge of having a hole melted through a particular spot where the bulb was extra close to the gel). I’m not an expert though so don’t quote me on this. Besides that , there are certain cleaning chemicals you don’t store right next to each other because they react violently, and it sounds like they might have been a bit haphazard with this.

@@david672orford I think that the lamp room would be what we in the good old US of A call under National Fire Protection Association rules [NFPA Publication 70 is the US National Electrical Code for safe installation] an electrical switchgear room. It would be responsible for having overcurrent protection - fuses and/or circuit breakers sized to prevent the wires from being overloaded and causing a fire - and would be the main point of removing mains power. However, switchgear in the course of its natural operation, especially that which uses fuses, is considered a source of ignition due to arcs and sparks from opening and closing circuits and must be kept from obstruction... storing anything flammable near it is just asking for a fire or explosion..

Can't believe I'm only just now seeing this video! My aunt was in there, and the only reason she is here with us today is because she saw the fire on the chair and felt that was a very weird thing to catch fire, and left immediately through the main doors which were unlocked. Her brother stayed, and died because of it. That's actually a large part of why my aunt moved back to the USA.

1981 was far along enough that people might have an idea that a night club might be a firetrap, and why - the materials inside, smoking, crowding. Had it been 30-40 years earlier, it might never have crossed anyone's mind. The attitude then was that fires happen, but that they are rare and best not thought about.

There was a similar disaster in Romania just a few years ago. It is called the Colectiv disaster. It involved, in a similar manner, the burning of a night club and the death of tens of people. Something like this happened in Brazil a few years ago, in 2013. The place was called "Boate Kiss" which translates to "Kiss Nightclub". There was a concert kinda thing going on and the band got their hands on a flare for outside use, and used it as pyrotecnic effect. It lit the acustic foam on the ceilling on fire and a thick smoke filled the place in just a few moments. Due to the lack of communication among security personal, nobody was being let out the main door (one had to pay what he/she consumed when leaving) . People were stacking up fast, and security weren't letting anyone out thinking it was a fight or something. There were no emergency exits, and the firefighters even tried to break a wall to break in. People who attended the concert thought the restroom doors were emergency exits, which led to 90% of the corpses being in the restrooms. Among the 1000 people who were at the party, roughly 240 were killed and 680 were injured in some way. Sad day.

Almost the same thing happened in Argentina in 2004 in a disco called cromañon. Someone in the crowd lit a flare inside the building that turned a blaze flammable materials. When the people started running away, they found out that one of the fire exits was closed with a lock. The doors that were opened were too small for the amount of people trying to leave at once. As a result 194 people died and something like 1400 were injured thanks to safety violations in the building.

The Butterly family should have been held responsible! There were numerous safety violations noted in Dublin Corporation inspections. These violations included overcrowding, blocking exits inside the club, blocking exits outside the club, broken emergency lights, faulty emergency door mechanisms, and locking doors to prevent unauthorized access. Eamon Butterly wrote on January 27, 1981 that "I personally take great care to make sure all exits are clear." There is a special hell waiting for him and his family for their part in this tragedy.

Reminds me a lot of a fire in a Dutch café in Volendam. Iirc, it was newyears and one of the guests lit a pack of sparkles. Surprised by the flame, they held it up toward the ceiling which was decorated with "festive" pine branches which had been hanging and drying there for months. It instantly lit the entire roof on fire and also melted the Christmas lights between them which caused a short and made the lights go out. There was only a single spiral staircase to exit the café and the windows and fire exits had the same issues as starfire. In the end, 14 people died and I believe some 300 were wounded. The fire died within mere minutes due to lack of oxygen, "saving" hundreds of people still inside
