After reaching out to Dennis about possibly repairing a broken Shimano ultralight reel I found out that I am very fortunate in that I live about 10 miles from Dennis. Dennis got back to my inquiry very quickly and I dropped off the reel. I had been looking everywhere on line for the necessary part for this reel without any luck. Dennis however had the part in stock, he installed it and did a routine maintenance service on the reel and I couldn't be happier. Dennis is an expert repair technician and more importantly a thoughtful, trustworthy person so I encourage anyone who needs a reel serviced to feel confident sending your equipment to Dennis for repair.

Thanks for all the insights. I have been fortunate to have a business near me that has done my repairs on mine just miles away. I do plan to invest the time into learning how to do this myself in the future with my Abu Garcia C3 and C4s that are a bit intimidating thus far.

Dennis - Really enjoying your videos - thanks for sharing your knowledge! What is your opinion of repairing/reselling the older Mitchel reels 300, 302, 486 etc.? I know a lot of them are still around (they are built like a tank) and I have done some repairs on a couple - but in your opinion are they worth doing to make a profit?

Hello, I thought in this series you will going to show some repairing and diagnostic as well. Would be awesome because you can explain things really well! Kind Regards Andras

Andrew - Most of the time I try and state the problem and then show how to address it. Are you interested in a particular reel or a certain failure point? I will try to get to them. Right now, the shop is busy with in season repairs and I do have a pile of project reels to do on problem diagnosis, but I just can't get to them at the moment. I will. Thanks for the reminder and suggestion - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Hi Denis, Sorry, my bad. I found a lot of repairing information on your channel. First I just searched for it in this playlist... :) Sorry for this.. However I have a specific question. I just purchased a Daiwa Emcast Sport 5500 in a car boot sale. Its a rear drag system. When the drag is loose it is easy spin but when the drag is tight it is basically impossible to spin the handle.. Could you help me out with this, please? Kind Regards, Andrew
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. I looked up the schematic for that reel and it shows a top drag system,. Hmmm. I think I would start by removing the side plate and having a look inside, With the side plate off, spin the rotor by hand without out the drag and then tighten the drag and see if you can notice what is binding. It may be a broken part in the drag assembly. Dennis

Very good info. I'm a vivid fisherman. Love salt water fishing. I love Penn reels I have peen 2/0, Senator 3/0 hs. 4 and 6/0 160, 309, peerless 9, 60 long Beach. Penn 350, Penn 320 gt. Penn jigmaster several penns to many to mention at least two of each just mentioned. Well as Abu garcia 7000 and 6500 fresh and salt water reels either one are fine reels and I'm particular about keeping them CLEAN inside and out if ever need a part can usually get them easley get them. Ive delt with Scott's bait and tackle not far from you in Egg Harbor. Haven bought parts since they sold the business. Good people and they ship quick. Peen is my # 1 choice even if have to by used not into China made to much. But have been wondering about the Penn squall. 15 or 20. Whats your professional option on these reels.? I dont abuse my equipment use them what intended for would it be a good reel.? Love your videos you take the time to explain take down putting back together well as good and the bad on things.

The squall is a solid and straightforward reel. I would not hesitate to use one. I just serviced a Squall 12. Stainless gears, HT100 drags. Quality reel - Dennis

Hello Dennis I just purchased a penn 704 greenie off ebay paid $40.00 plus $10.00 shipping. The internal mechanics are fine and the reel is very smooth however the bail seems to have an issue, it works as it should but seems to hang down much lower than other spin reels that I have. I was wondering if it is a bail spring issue or maybe a stopper. this is my first 704 I'm not too familiar with them. maybe I'll send it to you to repair.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
It may be missing a stopper, or the bail wire may be bent down due to it hitting an immovable object, like a pier wall or deck of a boat, while landing a fish. If the wire is bent, it can be straightened with a pliers. If the stopper is missing, it is something to Iive with. If your reel is lining evenly up and down the spool, then don't worry it. It is is gathering high or low, then you may want to replace the bail. - Dennis

I'm about to buy..a few reels...vintage 9 peerlees ,heddon green color spinning ..1 sears red fly reel...1 mitchell 304....so if you have any tips...for me...i want to clean them inside out....thanks...

These sound like great reels to take apart and learn on. Don't pay too much for them. If you plan on reselling these after you take apart and clean them you should do you homework and see what they are selling for now in good condition. You should try to pay half that price if you are going to recondition and sell them. If it's just for fun, then you can pay what you like - it will be the cost of tuition - Dennis

Dennis wouldn’t some of these reels be worth keeping for the parts to fix another reel ?
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
Yes - parts reels are good if you see a lot of that type of reel in for repair. If they are odd ducks and you never see them, then they are not worth keeping around - Dennis

Thinking about getting this reel from a guy pretty cheap but the foot stripped off the real still has the foot but the threads are completely stripped do you think I would be able to Re-thread the holes and put slightly bigger screws in?? It’s a avet sxj
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
It is possible. Either retap or possibly rivet it. If you can't, you can always sell asa parts reel if you get it cheap enough. Also, you may be able to get a replacement frame from Avet.. Try contacting them as follows (818) 576- 9895, or e-mail: reels@avetreels.com or regular mail
