So the Butchered Volvo XC70 now starts, runs, and moves.
But the customer wants to drive it back over 7 hours to VA, so we have a lot more work to do to make it ROAD-WORTHY!
In addition to the massive OIL LEAKS on top of the engine, we have to repair the SUSPENSION that was DAMAGED by the amateur towing company.

Had a person like this work on our house. Wasn't long before we told them to take a hike. Amazing how some have no respect toward other's property and only look to what they can take from you. We were going to do more stuff on the house and they missed out on that and any future work or referral. Blows the mind sometimes how people think. Had two Mexican guys follow up behind them and do 'Ivan work'. When they were done I wrote a letter to them and had my preacher that had done mission work in Spanish-speaking countries for decades translate my letter and I sent that to them, thanking them for good work. They came back and did more work for us. Respect is a universal language.

So true and because of the cost of having a retail shop these days, it explains a lot as why many shops are so expensive and careless. They are working two weeks of each month just to pay the overhead to maintain a legitimate shop, insurance, rent/mortgage, property taxes, waste fee's, local and state fee's and inspections and the list goes on. They tend to run vehicles through their shops like cattle.

@truracer20 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't put the butcher shop in the classification of "normal repair shop". Judging by The state of this car they aren't competent enough to check and fill fluids let alone any typical service work like brakes or suspension. A timing belt replacement on this engine is not complicated. A proper diagnosis would have led them to the timing belt in the first place, cam sensors and oil solenoid operation can easily be tested, eliminating them as a cause. And you have to determine the ecm's code set criteria for a cam crank corolation code, it will likely only set when the variable valve timing oil control solenoids are not active... It makes no sense to me why the butchers prefer replacing every component in a system until the problem is solved. Soo often they do it even when they suspect a certain component, hoping the $200 part will fix it rather than the $1,000 part that is screaming to them "HERE I AM, I'M THE PROBLEM", when the $200 part doesn't fix it then they replace the $300 part, then another $300 part... I'll guarantee this car also got the crankshaft position sensor replaced, notice the crank time. So this car got a crank sensor, two oil control solenoids, and two camshaft position sensors, before the new belt. As a home gamer even I know how to get OEM service data. To me it looks like the butcher shop didn't go to the trouble of looking up Volvo service data. But there is also the option that the butcher is the owner.

Just for fun, the reason I started doing alignment work myself back in the mid 80’s, was our local Sears auto shop. Had My wife’s old Grand Am there for alignment, it was pulling bad to the right. They worked on it, twice, still pulling to the right. Service manager started to get a little snarly with me. I asked Him to take it for a ride, which He did and admitted it still had the problem. He told me these exact words,” They are supposed to do that in case The driver falls asleep”. He did offer to TRY again, but I told Him never mind, I’ll do it myself.

many times, a feathering tire can cause a car to pull one way or the other,, we got a defective replacement tire from discount tire under the road hazzard warranty,, after we got a nail in the original tire that they couldnt repair. they never want to give u the original brand for warranty replacement, they try to say they dont have it in stock and give you a house brand that is lower quality.. tire looks exactly the same but is lower quality and different brand,, usually made in 3rd world country,, so what you do is ask for a different brand name tire that is a well known reputable brand. OR you call them first and ask if they have the exact original brand of your tire in stock,, THEN go to thier shop, show them the bad tire, and tell them u want it replaced with the exact same tire and u just called them and they said its in stock.. you could not look at the feathering tire and tell it was bad, but when you ran your hand over it, you can feel feathering, which is really tire delamination,, the tread is coming loose from the steel belt,,, very dangerous..
@randy1ization
@randy1ization Жыл бұрын
also I used to run HANKOOK tires on my truck, and every time I had a NAIL near the sidewall that they couldnt fix, they never replaced tire with hankook, they replace with oddball brand., , tire looks the same, but not of quality of hankook,, so if u deal with discount tire, beware of this,, under warranty, you have the right to get either the same exact tire, or one of comparable quality and cost.. the mileage rating on the inferior tire may be the same, but they are not built to the same quality.. they are hoping the replacement tire will last long enough until your other 3 tires wear out, then they sell you a whole new set.

Its one thing to perform repairs because of neglect, component failure, or abuse. Its 10 times more frustrating repairing the mistakes of others. I know of several shops that charge MORE to repair improper repairs, because of the headaches and problems that come with. Bringing cars back from the dead is a selfless mission and I love that you're so dedicated to making these cars right for the customer. The anaerobic sealer won't set up unless the mating parts are tight together (enough to displace any air in the joint). My suspicion is that - if you end up with some of it in the oil passages, it won't set up there and will get washed out with the oil instead of blocking the passages.

Most shops would not have accepted this basket case. It's always a dangerous proposition to step in behind a butcher and unfu*k a mess to the point of their mistakes not being your liability. I strongly suspect ithe original problem was a worn timing belt or the belt jumped timing, a competent mechanic would have recognized that and focused solely on a timing belt replacement. Part of that procedure would be verification of timing marks, this would have told them that (and this is my suspicion) the timing belt jumped teeth. I suspect that if they changed the belt they did not reset the timing, they just took the old belt off and slipped the new belt on... It does have a hint of being an owner type DIY job though don't it?

Ive had hackjobs like this come in like this. But the repairs to fix the other shops shit and then adress and fix the original complaint is often like ivan said. Triple. We had a dude whose wife took a sonic for something no one knew no reciepts.... they butchered the hell out of it timing cover gasket (chains have to come off) oil pan gasket. And missed the original issue that was a leaking oil cooler and a seep at a turbo coolant pipe... to fix that mess and then repair the issue (there was no overlapping labor unfortunately) was like 3 grand...

Like Ivan said, he did hire a reputable towing company. However, they in turn subcontracted the work to a unreputable towing service. Owner had nothing to do with it.

We found a local mechanic from Eastern Europe. He is uber-detail-oriented. Hourly rate is probably about 25% higher than anyone else but his work is so much better. Long-term, less-expensive and much more reliable car.

Congratulations, Ivan! Truly amazing you took this on. We all know you would get this car running correctly. We just didn't know why from a business perspective you take the challenge or why the owner would drop SO much money into the car (not just your bill but all the ones before you plus the towing bill)

Ivan: Well done my man ! I laugh at you & Eric from South Main Auto when you curse Dorman & other non OEM parts. . I purchased a coolant sensor from GM for a 3800 engine in my Buick Park Ave. I paid $76 Canadian for it. It lasted 7 months. A friend of mine who runs a shop in Oregon tells me that parts are such a problem that he has to send one of his mechanics to the junkyard to take parts (most are sensors of some stripe) off junkers in order to get a working part. I bought a supposedly new alternator for my Buick($250) & took the alternator off the car at the parts store, & installed the new one. I started the car & the alternator functioned properly, but a "buzzing " sound came from the new alternator. I listened carefully & the buzzing sound changed pitch with rpm. I suspect the brush holder was rubbing on the. rotor. I called the owner of the parts house out & had him listen to the "buzz". I told him what I thought it was. He told me he had no idea what it was, but the alternator was not supposed to make that sound. I took the new alternator off & reinstalled the old one. I waited two days for that alternator, & he had to order a replacement. I drove downtown to an auto-electric shop, bought new brushes, removed the alternator (it is no more than a ten minute job, even for an old guy 83 like myself) and split the case. I thought a moment & then asked the store owner if he had the front bearing & the rear bushing for the alternator. He had & I had a puller for bearing & installed it & removed the rear bushing (hardest part of the job) put it all back together & reinstalled the alternator in the Buick & it worked just fine. Why don't ALL cars have the alternator mounted like my Buick ? I now carry the NEW alternator in its box in the trunk. Ivan, I love your troubleshooting technique, & some of the wretched jobs that you take on & fix. The Best of British Luck to you my man Cheers! Brian . Remember Ivan, in fixing any vehicle " It is nothing that brute force & ignorance can't fix !"

Nice video Ivan ! For camshaft cover the best sealant I found is Reinzosil by Victor Reinz. German made . It's been recommended to me by a parts supplier . I had a leaking Sprinter oil filter housing made out of 2 pieces with a gasket in between. Dealer won't sale the gasket just the whole part for few hundred bucks. Not much sealing surface between the 2 pieces and every sealant I've tried failed in few weeks . Reinzosil fixt it permanently . The stuff it's supper strong and the closest you can get to the OEM sealant

Great video, love watching vids on keeping up old Volvos, I too have a 2004 XC70 with 243k. I do all my own work so it's done right. I did a lot of part replacement due to wear. Just rec'd my dash cluster back. sent it out to MO., to have bulbs and electrics cleaned up. I removed the CD player and replaced it with another CD player. I un-soldered the main board and swapped out the replacement cd board. With all the security measures, I figured that Volvo would have a security pin hard coded in the board. Now it won't start. I think it may be immobilizer key, it cranks but no start. I had a P0600 code, so I did a reset for the ECM with the pos. & neg. battery cables vice gripped together for two days, the door was unlocked and I just put the key in try to start. I'll try the multiple key engage in door and ignition. XC70's are tanks! they last forever and mine came from Canada snow and ice and no rust...

Hopefully the PVC system is breathing properly. Many camshaft seal leaks is a sure sign that the system is clogged up. The ole' surgical glove over the oil filler port is a sure test to see if it's clogged.

I think I would have preferred thread inserts (eg Helicoil) to the "next-size-up" method on those four cam cover bolts (especially since this design heavily relies on that cam cover to properly seal to distribute oil under pressure). The next size up method is fine too as long as the fastener can hold to the specced torque. Nice work! Oops forgot one thing. Is that timing belt tensioner really supposed to have springback like you showed at @16:54? Seems to me that would be inviting it to skip teeth, as you had to correct early in the project.
@ludvigericson6930
@ludvigericson6930 Жыл бұрын
Upsizing is the correct answer if possible, why would it hold LESS torque? Bigger bolt bigger torque. Only problem is clearance and tolerances.
@jimrankin2583
@jimrankin2583 Жыл бұрын
Older simpler cam drive belt systems (Ford 2.3 liter 4 cylinder ) frequently had a manual tensioned-lock it solid tensioner. More modern systems seem to have constant spring tension with specified starting point where the adjustment is locked down. That can provide extended service since the tensioner takes up slack as the belt stretches … or it can cause premature failure when it doesn’t hold enough tension to start with or adequately maintain tension as the belt wears/stretches. For an example of the latter see Chevy Aveo! I was the unfortunate second owner of one. After two sets of valves, (at least 3 if you count the original owner who fixed it at least once) mercifully it went to the great salvage yard in the sky because of a wreck.

Ivan. Anaerobic sealant is best as it only cures between the metal parts. The sealant that is squeezed out, does not harden. It will dissolve in the oil and will not block any passages.

@Ivan II : The head gasket wasn't replaced? You didn't show torquing down the head bolts. But if the head gasket is replaced by those butchers then they probable fitted it without cleaning the deck of the block and the head itself. If so, that could lead to premature blowing up the gasket. ...then all will start all over again 👻 About the cam cover over bolts: You made new tread. - Why didn't you just place 4) helicoils instead and use the original bolts?
