Fun fact but the reason Marty doesn't get in the water at the beginning is because it turned out Fran Kranz is actually ridiculous shredded. They didn't find out until filming and had to write it out.

I interpret this movie as the justification of and the explanation for why every other horror movie exists and how the cliches make sense. Split up, go into a room you know you'll die in, touch the thing, open the door, the 'types' of roles in every horror movie, etc. etc. It's a meta movie that explains the genre, pays homage to the genre, and makes fun of the genre all at the same time. it's just a brilliant idea and they executed it very well.

You wanna know the crazy secret twist? The Ancient Ones are supposed to be us. Every year, we fill the seats of a movie theater to see a group of random teens get murdered by a random monster. The reason the earth shook during Marty's fakeout-death was because we got angry that we knew he was going to come back later. The line "it's time to give someone else a chance" is also reference to how we need to make new, more innovative horror movies, like the Babbadook or It Follows, and not reboot the same thing over and over again. The people in the control room are literally the Hollywood executives trying to appease us by repeating the same sacrifice.

Yeah, the whole thing is a metaphor for horror movies. The Ancient Ones are the audience, and all the people behind the scenes are the film crew, with Sigiurney Weaver’s character being a producer. Definitely worth watching a second time with that in mind to pick up on all the references to horror movie production

@@holddowna EVEN CRAZIER. At the beginning of the film, the two guys in the cart make a reference to the Steven King film, "The Faculty" They claim that it was the Chem department's fault. If you watch the Faculty, it's true. This means, that every horror movie ever made WORLD WIDE, is possibly cannon to their world, and was just another ritual being completed to keep the old ones asleep.

Hilarious - That was so much better than expected. Not really into horror, but this is more like Evil Dead, as you suggested. Best stoner character; love his bong, mug, billy club, haha. I rooted for him the whole time. I was cracking up as Hemsworth kept hitting the force field on the way home…didn’t even seem physically possible. Also, that blood bath by the elevators with all those horror characters looked amazing, and the MURMAN, LOL! You guys were funny when Sigourney shows up.

If you liked this commentary on horror movies, Funny Games is a good one as well that sort of has this same sort of take on regurgitation of horror movie production as well as what the audience wants. If you watch it, and you quickly look up some meanings about it, its quite an awesome movie. It also comments on the whole "what the audience wants" theme as well. The remake being a shot for shot remake is intended commentary on literally making the same movie over and over and it still being successful.

The director confirmed that the rolls were actually reversed. Marty was actually the virgin and Dana was the fool. If they killed Marty then they would have had the same result!

I avoided this one for years due to the generic title, then I noticed that Joss Whedon was involved and gave it a shot. It quickly became one of my all-time favourite movies, and possibly my favourite Hooror-Comedy. A great reaction by two hilarious and lovely Ladies. 👍☮❤

This is basically a Buffy the Vampire Slayer shared universe or side by side dimension as alternative reality. As lots of characters actors from Buffy are in this movie not to mention every creature here is the version inebriated from the whole Buffyverse Angelverse and the entire plot of this movie is the plot of Buffy season 4 but utterly movie'd up to a massive level detail. Witty humor galore as Buffy series is. So Josh directed this with 100% Buffy sprinkled through entire movie. Even the ending left on a cliff hanger we don't get to see what it will look like when the ancient ones wreck havoc through the world as Angel series ending with the biggest cliff hanger in tv series we don't get to see the apocalypse fight I know this great detail for I am Buffy watcher Even how some characters died here is the exact way they kinda face death on Buffy Angel series

From my understanding, not only is the movie a tip of the hat to other Horror movies but more importantly it's about Us, the Audience. Specifically, we are the evil Gods limiting Horror movies progressing. If it doesn't have all the usual troupes already approved by Us, the audience, in a Horror movie we destroy the movie. Hence why this movie has all the usual troupes in it. Amazingly creative and true message but how many viewers get it? Enjoyed your review, thanks

Yeah, so they hired Chris Hemsworth to be the jock but they had already hired Fran Kranz to be the fool. Kranz is WAY more buff than Hemsworth, so costuming had to put him in layer of clothes to hide his hot bod. They could have used him as the jock but he was the an amazing stoner.
