There's been a marketing push the last handful of years to boost the WNBA's presence, with ads featuring NBA players promoting the women's league. They've been making an effort, but the arrival of Caitlin Clark is the exact kind of force they've needed forever, in spite of greats like Taurasi and Moore having been in the league over the past twenty years. They now have a transcendent superstar who is making waves *outside* the league. The WNBA needs to absolutely ride this wave. Games are selling out now. Jerseys are flying off the racks. There's big marketing eyes on the league now. They need to seize this moment.

@chrisolivo65914 ай бұрын
Dustin, the WNBA has been funded financially by the NBA since day one (they own 50% so they bail them out from any revenue shortfall). The WNBA has never had to fight to survive so they don’t have the right people in place who understand business. They have been saying since its inception in 1996 that they want more eyeballs and bigger salaries for their players. Now they have a player that actually brings in casual fans to the point where they are selling out arenas, and they are jealous of her. Yes, many players, coaches and media are jealous that Clark is getting the attention and they are cutting their nose to spite their face as they have a real chance to finally grow the league. I’m a hockey fan, and i go through the same crap as they just don’t know how to promote their stars and make decisions that are mind-boggling. The NHL has their best player (Connor McDavid) in the Stanley Cup Final and nobody outside hockey fans like me are watching. That’s what the WNBA are doing as Clark should be featured any chance they get. The PGA tour did this with Tiger Woods and look how big the purses are compared to 1996 (before Tiger turned Pro). I looked it up and the purses have gone up 10x.

I agree with most of your CC take but that major issue is, she's not a superstar so you can't really treat her like one.
@simon466cards4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I disagree with your take on Caitlin Clark on multiple fronts. 1) The Olympics was a no-win situation. If she was on the team, she would ridden the bench because she’s not yet a top 8 player. People would have complained about her lack of minutes. If she got minutes, people would have complained she wasn’t a starter. If she started, people would have complained she should get the ball more. There was going to be outrage about the Olympics no matter what. 2) I don’t understand this idea that she doesn’t get the ball in Indiana. She’s literally 6th in the entire WNBA in usage rate and 5th in assist rate. 3) Wemby and Taurasi didn’t come into the league with people saying they would save the league. They came into the league as players with potential to be great. That’s why the situations are not comparable. Her mistreatment is based on her being viewed (rightfully) as a saviour to the league. Everything stems from that - jealousy that she is going to save the league in a way that the other players couldn’t do. Has nothing to do with actual skill/ability.
@johnwayne98284 ай бұрын
To address your first point, the logic doesnt track. Their concern was angering millions of her fans? So what? Thatd still be millions of eyes watching them, angry or not, to see her when she does get minutes. Well now thatll just be millions who arent going to watch it at all. They're cutting off their nose to spite their face.

That's ok Simon, we don't always have to agree. I look at the Olympics situation differently. It's true people are going to complain no matter what, that's the internet. But including her on the team is the better move, than not. It shows the league is committed to the next gen of talent, and it gives Clark the opportunity to bond with those players, all of that is good for the league, and all involved. Sure maybe there is some additional nuance between Wemby and Clark, but the circumstances are what they are, and the League has to adjust to Clark (and make a ton of money doing so). Not the other way around.

It's interesting to hear you talk about WNBA. It's evident that you are a casual watcher, because Aliyah Boston is a great player too. The problem with this team is coaching (which you did mention leadership, so I'll give you that). If defenses key in on Caitlin, she's not an "elite" passer in the WNBA yet. Simply put, she turns the ball over too much right now. I do agree with you that the Fever are SOFT. They need an enforcer. Every elite team has one. You're also right about the veterans around the league...they are completely jealous of Clark. So I guess I both agree and disagree with you. I appreciate this video though!

I get what you are saying about the coaches and her team (the offense should be run around her)...where I think there is some consternation is with how teams play against her. If she is a generational player why wouldn't you want to play her hard? You even mentioned the Bad Boy Pistons in a positive light...playing hard against superstars was their whole thing. I don't think it would be fair for the WNBA to say "she is our most profitable player, please do not touch her" because then we get into the same issue we have with QBs diving to get roughing the passer calls. She talked crap to that player on the other side of the court (the part of the video no one watches) and that player checked her. If that happened in the NBA or the NFL or any other men's sport we would be cheering.

Imagine being a basketball coach and hearing this take. Clarke is a turnover machine. You cant run an O through a player who can't control the ball. So far, she's not even a top 5 rookie. The scrutiny she gets is unfair, but hype demands it. The question is can she rise to it. I think she will, but so far she hasn't lived up to the hype. What she has done is complain a lot and the other players see that and are making her earn he spot... as happens in any other league. Long list of rooks whove had to deal with that... Yao, J Holliday, every 1st round QB for the last 30 years. Even Bedard got that attention this year. He was absolutely battered on the ice hos rookie season. There are too many talking heads that think shes earned something becuase she is popular. The fact remains shes never won a championship, she broke a scoring record due to Covid rules allowing her to get an extra season and shes not an above average ball handler. Her game needs work.
@TheSportsCardDad4 ай бұрын

@1CentSportsCards4 ай бұрын
@@TheSportsCardDad Turasi is 42 years old now. She's placed top 5 in MVP voting 8 different years, she's a 10x all star and 3 time champion. Comparing what is essentially a prospect to a HOFer is a fools errand. Turasi caught heat for speaking the truth which is that Clark will (and has had) a tough transition from college to the WNBA. Clark may be destined for greatness, but let's not crown her until she does for the game even 1/10 of what Turasi has done. Also, Turasi averaged 17 points on .416 shooting with 2.7 TOV her rookie season. Clark is 16.3 points on .373 shooting with 5.4 TOV so an apples to apples comparison shows Turasi was the better rookie. She took less shots, scored more and controlled the ball better. Si actually has Clark only ranked as the 6th best rookie in the class right now. It'll be tough for her to get over Brink and Reece especially with Cardoso back healthy.
@TheSportsCardDad4 ай бұрын
@@1CentSportsCards lol I saw that 'top rookies' report. A mainstream media top 10 list is good for what these days? lol Maybe MJ was the 6th best rookie according to SI in 1984 lol c'mon man. But again, the one stat you forgot was the '$ generated for the league and its players' stat. That one trumps them all. And in 12 months, Clark has done more from that standpoint, than Turasi did in her whole career. Let that sink in.
@1CentSportsCards4 ай бұрын
@@TheSportsCardDad well mainstream media has the media passes to actually attend every game and they're no right all the time but they're not wrong many times either. They are professionals who get paid to do a job in a highly competitive space so they actually have to get it right most the time to stay employed/relevant. And yes she brings in money. No question. But why should that mean she gets treated any differently WHILE ON THE COURT? You're implying that the league and players should somehow ensure her success and rise to the top to keep the dollars rolling in. They absolutely should not do that to keep the integrity of the game in tact. Level playing fields mean everything in sports. It's why people get suspended for cheating, betting, etc. Every Superstar has had to prove themselves with the rules of the league and how the game is played. Why should Clark be different?
@TheSportsCardDad4 ай бұрын
@@1CentSportsCards mainstream media is all 'opinion news', the same as this very YT channel. So the term 'professional' can be used very loosely lol Yes those folks have access, and yet their own bias will play into their narrative. Which has resulted in the rise of YT and independent voices, thank goodness for all of us. The truth is Clark IS being treated differently while on the court, but not in the way you think. Teams are targeting her, and that is as clear as the sky is blue. Everyone can see it with their own eyes. "Every superstar has to prove themselves" and yet ironically Turasi made the Olympic team as a 22 year old who had proven nothing as a pro. She enjoyed players like Lisa Leslie taking her under her wing as you would expect and cheering her on. And yet Clark enjoys none of those 'Turasi' perks.
