Fair enough, too; since most of us were stoned when we saw the Smothers Brothers and how they mocked CBS censorship right up to the end.

At that time, it was de rigueur to seem to be totally bored with what was happening and in this instance, the group was forced to lip-sync the vocals; a practice that many if not most performers would only begrudgingly condescend to doing.

The years I spent talking to Chelsea Lee -Eleanor "the Blond" just a few months before her passed away August 2016 while she was living in Britain she was telling me she couldn't stand Barbara Morillo " Right Side Black hair" after the huge falling out, Eleanor said to me that she was going to NYC to do a last gig at BB Kings Blue Jazz Club but she decided not to go and I was going to meet her there. She was devastated when Jeanette Jacobs passed the "female Brown hair Left" was pretty much what did her in. Eleanor was a very very open heart woman.. I reside in NYC and I do miss her.. we would drink wine while talking and she would ALWAYS be naked because she said I want to be free, she was a very cool person to talk to...

was a friend of Eleanor as well. We met in late 80s' remained friends until she moved to Florida around 2000 maybe 2001. lost track of her after that, was talking to a coworker about her and that evening he googled them and Eleanor found her obit online. showed it to me next day. when i got back to the hotel, think i cried not beign there for her in the end. But yes that was Eleanor/Chelsea as I knew her, prefered being nude or if he had to wear clothes commando under it

Anthony mind if i ask you, did Eleanor pass away in Britain or in NYC? if in NYC do you know where? As I said in prior comment was friends with her from 1989 - to around 2001. i belong to a site Mylife.com and it showed a female of Eleanor's age searching for me (my name anyway) but I had moved to SC by then and probably did not think it was me. I would like to be able to pay my final respects to her and a final goodbye

Thanks for posting! This sounds really beautiful and high powered great dancing! Also, they were three beautiful ladies. It would have been a hit if recorded a few years earlier during the girl group era. I showed my mother this video as she grew up in the 60's and was class of 64. She used to meet with girlfriends twice a week, until her early 20's, to teach each other all the latest dance moves, and she said she used to dance just like this and it was considered standard dance back then. I thought she would be surprised at the dance moves. I ordered their first album, and this song doesn't sound nearly as good as this on the LP. This live version is way better. It was Eleanor's voice that made it sound extra good, and I can't hear her voice on the recorded version for some reason. They all had really nice voices. Sorry to hear that Jeanette and Eleanor are no longer with us, and really sad that Jeanette died so young. May they rest in peace.

While The Cake's studio version of "You can have him" is a very good Wall of Sound track, I can't agree this is their best song. Surely "Baby, that's me" holds that honour - one of the best Wall of Sounds songs ever recorded on this planet in the last thousand years.

Jeanette Jacobs was actually acting that way because the guys managing them, Charles Greene and Brian Stone, had her microphone turned off, because she could not really sing R & B. This was, in her own way, a protest...she was actually the most talented in the group. Jeanette wrote most of the material although they all contributed, Jeanette was the force behind it and the girls held no delusions about it either.I will post a link to a great article about The Cake for any who might be interested

According to Tragic Magic The Life of Traffic’s Chris Wood by Dan Ropek: “On tour with Ginger Baker’s Air Force...Coming off stage one night, she tripped over the drum kit, falling hard and hitting her head. Knocked unconscious, she came around and seemed alright. But thereafter she would be plagued by lingering headaches and then more serious complications.” “...Having begun with the fall she’d taken during the long past Air Force days,, had progressed from headaches to incapacitating seizures. Watching them occur at an unpredictable but increasing basis, Chris could only cradle her head as she writhed and worry as he waited for the episode to pass.” “...On December 31st 1981, she left her home alone to attend a New Years Eve party, presumably somewhere near Kent, where she lived with Larry (her partner) and Damien (their son). At the party, she was supposedly accosted by a drunk man, who, having been rebuffed, hit Jeanette in the face with a glass. As a result of the trauma, she collapsed into a series of seizures. Somehow returning home in the middle of the night- her face bandaged in gauze, she was calmed by Larry, who left her sleeping on the living room couch. On the morning of January 1, 1982, he found her in the same place, dead, of causes directly related to her seizures.”

if Jeanette was protesting for whatever then she did it alot. I met Jeanette in 1968 along with Jimi Hendrix and Mitch Mitchell at Manny's in New York when 18 and after talking to them learn of the Cake's gig at the Salvation. I was dumbfound when while the girls where singing Jeanette was the only one not dancing or was seldom moving. I found out years later after the poor girl died that she had epilepsy. I would also add as the young person claiming to be the child of Jeanette shame on you.

"While Barbara and Eleanor skated, dipped and weaved to the rhythm, Jeanette stood stock still to their left, looking detached and aloof, holding her microphone down by her waist. When she did finally raise it to her mouth, she purposefully lip-synched the words rather than sing them. Everyone assumed it was just part of their shtick. “Yeah, that was her gimmick,’ agrees Rodney Bingenheimer. Barbara recalls Greene and Stone also saying, “Yeah, it’s different. Keep it!” But Chelsea thinks there was another reason. “Everybody said, “Why does she just stand there?’ Most of the time Greene and Stone would have her mic turned off because she couldn’t sing R&B. She felt left out." (dangerousminds.net/comments/the_cake_a_real_life_beyond_the_valley_of_the_dolls2 )
