You Can Have Him - The Cake (1967)

Bizarre clip from semi-psychedelic girl group "The Cake" performing "You Can Have Him". The overly enthusiastic girl in green is Jeanette Jacobs (1950-1980), who married Chris Wood of the group Traffic. The other two members are Chelsea Lee & Barbara Morillo. They wrote their own music, sang a cappella, and member Barbara Morillo is reported to be currently working on a new a cappella CD with 80s rock star Patti Smyth. The group sang background on The Soft Machine's first album "Why Are We Sleeping," and Chelsea Lee was in a film produced by Peter Yarrow called "You Are What You Eat," where she sings "I Got You Babe" with Tiny Tim while The Band played the music. The Cake's recorded two albums: "The Cake" (Decca, 1967), and "A Slice Of Cake" (Decca, 1968), which were re-released on CD in 2007 by Rev-ola.

@lilic1 thats not true either, Just to set the record straight, she never had epiliepsy seizures until after she was with Ginger Bakers Airforce, Beleive it or not it was caused by a severe blow to the head by some stage hand hitting her accidentally with a drum stand. Not dancing on stage is just who she was, the gift she had was her voice and her beauty...

I met Eleanor (Chelsea Lee) on Myspace. We friended each other on Myspace. She always posted nice comments on my page. I am very sorry of her passing nearly a month ago. I just found out almost a week ago through FB. I could not believe it. R.I.P.

As for the visuals (the set piece) - it might seem 'bizarre' in hindsight, but, you must remember; this WAS 'The Summer of Love.' The set-piece is a Dali-esque cake - melting, dripping, etc. This track - as well as 2 others on this album (Baby That's Me & World Of Dreams) were beautifully arranged by Harold Batiste in a Spector Wall of Sound-style. The women of The Cake (Eleanor Barooshian, Jeanette Jacobs & Barbara Morillo) didn't like these tracks (not music-wise, rather, lyric-wise. They didn't think the song's messages fit them - felt the lyrics were more 'mature' than they were at the time, preferring the more baroque pop-sounding (if you don't know what baroque pop is, think Brian Wilson/Pet Sounds, also from this time) tracks. The Cake's history was short, but, fascinating.

Actually, if I could put my two cents in - I had the pleasure of meeting Eleanor through Myspace, believe it or not. I chatted with her a few times, and she told me Jeanette had horrible epilipsy. They (the other two) absolutely wanted her in the band, and to be on stage with them, but if they didn't give her something she would go into epiliptic fits from the stage lights. Aaaand that's why she's so out of it. Poor girl. She's so beautiful all the same!

She suffered from seizures and headaches all her life which only increased after tripping over Ginger Baker's drums when she was in his Air Force Band. Jeanette Jacob's sadly passed away in 1982 after years of struggling with seizures. Rip Jeanette Jacobs

According to Tragic Magic The Life of Traffic’s Chris Wood by Dan Ropek: “On tour with Ginger Baker’s Air Force...Coming off stage one night, she tripped over the drum kit, falling hard and hitting her head. Knocked unconscious, she came around and seemed alright. But thereafter she would be plagued by lingering headaches and then more serious complications.” “...Having begun with the fall she’d taken during the long past Air Force days,, had progressed from headaches to incapacitating seizures. Watching them occur at an unpredictable but increasing basis, Chris could only cradle her head as she writhed and worry as he waited for the episode to pass.” “...On December 31st 1981, she left her home alone to attend a New Years Eve party, presumably somewhere near Kent, where she lived with Larry (her partner) and Damien (their son). At the party, she was supposedly accosted by a drunk man, who, having been rebuffed, hit Jeanette in the face with a glass. As a result of the trauma, she collapsed into a series of seizures. Somehow returning home in the middle of the night- her face bandaged in gauze, she was calmed by Larry, who left her sleeping on the living room couch. On the morning of January 1, 1982, he found her in the same place, dead, of causes directly related to her seizures.”

If you rewatch it, it looks like she hurt her leg or twisted her ankle getting off that stupid revolving stage....and l am certain she was wearing some crazy abfab top gear shoes though. Then again I wasn't there. If you watch the performance, she doesn't put any weight on her left leg the whole while.
