The California Raisins: Tests, 1st Commercial Elements and Gags

The very first Raisin test animated by William Fiesterman, elements from the first "Late Show" 1986 spot, with animation and directed by "Spike"(Bill Fiesterman), Doug Aberle, Gary Bialke, and Tony Merrithew.
According to William on a Facebook post, he wrote: "In 1986, we had just developed front light/back light tech. We had tried a bit on Twain but mostly we had gone front projection for the Twain project. The front light back light set ups usually meant a custom clear plexi table and backdrop with foreground lighting and silhouette (black outline) lighting with a manual toggle switch. So human error was always lurking in the background. The technique used the silhouette frame as a video cookie cutter matte to perfectly cutout the foreground object so it could be composited onto a master scene or combined to form a line of dancing raisins, etc. in video post production. Many times the video editors at the post production facilities had never heard of the technique before but all of them latched onto it once they grasped what we were trying to do.

This is the reason I think they resonated with people. I didn't fall in love with them until 1988, because I learned about the intricate details it took to make a 30 second commercial, and was impressed, and suddenly after my cousin had one of the Hardee's ones, I wanted them too.
