In the TV station I work, we have (for field production) 2 or 3 bigger, on-shoulder cameras and at least 8 of these hand-held camcorders. People who compare DSLRs or digital Cine cameras with camcorders are comparing apples to oranges. This type of camera is perfect if you want something that shoots only video, produces quick delivery footage and is all-in-one package. No, there is no time to change your lens if you are shooting a march of protesters in the street and something happens 100 yards away. You need to zoom there in 1 second, not open your bag to look for "the telephoto lens". And there is no time to screw-in your ND filter if you are chasing a person, who is avoiding you and suddenly exits from indoors to bright daylight. You need to have that filter on a 1-click button. So, in short, these cameras look like that and perform like that because they are best for a specific type of work. Because the average consumer is not buying them, they are not featured in the thousands reviews of DSLRs, mirrorless or cinema cameras and lenses. But the professionals who use them, need exactly that. And about this particular camera - the only problem I see with it is the high price. Having said that - the camcorders we use are one of the older Sony models, I believe AX1. Each of them have recorded thousand of hours of video and hundreds of reports. We still use them every day. Believe me, in the long run - the price is justified.

That's very true. I remember working with someone who came from the camcorder world and I had to explain to him what a par-focal lens means because he kept getting pissed that he couldn't zoom in to focus! I'm talking about DSLR shooting. This thing is designed to send someone out to do live coverage of an event . . . or lets say even a concert and then have it OUT as fast as possible. The$ 7,000 price tag still seems like a lot. But the truth is, even if your doing more high end commercial stuff. With that camera you could out shoot just about anyone. Still, makes me wonder if it's worth it to buy a Canon cinema camera with auto focus and throw a TV lens on it.

You must be at a fancy TV station that can upgrade instantly. The local TV station I work at we still use Sony EXR1 for most of our MMJs. We only have 2x Sony PXW 400 XDCAMs for special projects. I don't get to see a 4K or a h265 anytime soon.

One acronym defines the purpose of this type of camera...ENG. I 100% agreed with what you are stating here. The main difference between the cinematic approach and the ENG field work is based on time and opportunity.

You can do the exact same thing with a full frame DSLR with a 24-105 on your shoulder, the quality will be the same (sometimes better) but for 3 times cheaper. Those products are aimed for pros' that's why they don't give a **** about the quality/price ratio.
@momchilminkov5722
@momchilminkov5722 6 жыл бұрын
@@atomka2433 Try shooting something that is 100 yards away with a 105mm lens. The new Sony Z190 offers 29 to 720 mm in FF equivalent. This Canon goes shorter, because of the bigger chip and smaller crop factor, but still goes tot about 400 on the long end. And that is what a broadcast TV cameraman needs, it's not a whim. 105 would be impossible. Then try to attach two XLR microphones to a DSLR. Or to shoot inside and outside in quick succession without putting on/off a ND filter. As I said before - these camcorders pack exactly these features, because they are needed for a specific type of work. It's ridiculous to think one can do the same with a DSLR.

So this is the first review I've seen so far on the 705. Having used a 305 for many years (since 2011), along with 5Ds, Panny GH4/5, Canon C100, etc. It's always funny how people want to compare a camcorder with a digital cine. They are two different tools. Both have their place. I loved the xf305 for many reasons, and hated for some as well. Ergonomically this new XF705 should be superb. The XF305 also had some of the best HD color palette I've ever used. For shooting stage presentations under stage lighting it is still the best looking footage I've ever shot. When I got hired to do a 3 camera stage shoot two years ago I hired a shooter with an XF305 and rented a third. The smooth crawl needed by a fixed lens for stage work is a must, and *no* DSLR can do it. I've tried. Trying to change batteries or even cards on a long stage shoot with a DLSR is a joke. It's trivial with this form factor. Yep, it's expensive, but I've spent about $7k kitting out a 5D, or a GH5 to do the same damn thing this does. Go buy yourself a 300MM or longer Canon or Panny lens and a couple of quality primes. So what you didn't cover that you could have covered is typical run and gun situations. You are shooting indoors for this review! Do a head and shoulders short and show us it's DOF in a typical office shooting environment! Light a three point lighting interview and let's see what the 1" sensor can do? What about low light? Couldn't you have stopped off at a pub on the way home from a field shoot and shot something to show that it can finally handle low light without jacking the ISO to 5K or carrying lights? And did they keep the most useful dam thing the XF305 had, which was a (polar) vector scope? It was the easiest way to get a neutral color balance. I have one on my GH5 but it can't be set while shooting. You don't know what you are missing until you work with one. I shot a lot of documentary stuff with my XF305, it didn't look as good or perform as well in low light as my C100 or 5D, but maybe this xf705 can come closer? And please, no comparisons with the XF200 etc. the XF200 and others are just a joke. They are not serious tools. Been there, tried them. You need the three ring setups on the xf305 or 705 to really work fast. I've rented some of these 'lessor' models and they really suck. Something is given up. About all I got out of them was infared mode for one specialty commercial. The XF705 appears to be made for pros but sadly is years late. Usual Canon problem. Will have to rent one soon, and will certainly rent it for stage work. It will find it's home in the rental pools but is a specialty tool. Thanks for your work on the review.

Last year I transitioned away from a UX-90 to a GH5. Parts of me really miss the camcorder form factor, especially for stage shoots. I'm probably (at the moment) where you were a while back realizing that DSLRs don't do stage shoots very well. Agreed all-round, they're job-specific tools.

People who shoot corporate (lets face it, that's 90% of the people here bitching) don't understand the toughness of these type of camcorders. Not to ditch on them, it's a honest job but your camera, at most, will probably encounter very light rain with some heat or a bit cold. Maybe freezing. Oh no, the camera froze due to heat. Lets wait a minute to let it cool down. Yeah that's something I can't do. These camcorders are tough, very stable and very easy to use near blind in the field with high quality optics. These are the the kind of cameras that will go into the jungle a few days after having been used in the arctic or in war while going live for a political event after that. Versatile and a camera you can trust in every situation, that's the exact market they are going for and that doesn't come cheap. People these days are just seeing the image and the spec sheet and forget literally everything else.

It is interesting that when the Canon XF305 came out in 2010 it cost $7,000.00 US! Go back and read some of the comments written about the 305 when it first came out and you will read the same complaints about the 305 then as you read about the 705 now. Cost to much, not professional, no one will buy it, not as good as...blah blah blah. If you don't like it don't buy it. I have been using the 300 since 2012 and still love it. I have taken it to many places including Alaska, The Pantanal, three trips to Africa and just recently the Atacama desert in Chile and Patagonia. It has NEVER failed me and NEVER lost a clip!! Bob

This is a camera from 2018, isn't it? How would this camera hold up today, on march 2021 against the competition? Have there been firmware updates that improved functionality ? Is the AF still sufficient? Or is it obsolete because of camera's like the Sony FX3 (with IBIS and perhaps better AF?) ? and the C70? I think many people would appreciate a new purchase decision making comparison in today's light. For example does it have "tap to track focus"? It seems very attractive.

Always love your reviews, clear, to the point and discuss issues beyond the spec sheet. One small detail that you picked on is not an issue with me. That extra record button on the left. Button real estate is scarce enough, so I would not add the button. Particularly as I have for many years, used a LANC controller on the tripod arm. Gives me on/off and beautiful slow zoom control, while leaving my left hand free to manually focus or do a crash zoom.

So a camera with similar features to the JVC HC500 for twice the price. Let's see the HC500 has a longer zoom range, records 4K 50p/60p 10-bit 4:2:2 internal in ProRes LT format, can record to dual SD cards or an internal m.2 SSD drive, has HDR and LOG profiles, 12 stops of dynamic range like the GH5 does, but costs half as much as the X705. Tough choice here...

@SewTubular
@SewTubular 6 жыл бұрын
@@absolutemotionvideoNY I was a big Canon fan up until 2012 when I switched completely over to Panasonic. The only issue I had in the past with JVC cameras was their dynamic range, but it looks like the HC500 won't have any issues with DR. Shooting 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 is a huge upgrade in image quality over 8-bit 4:2:0, so I'm not too concerned about color, and at HALF the price of the XF705 it would be very hard to justify buying the Canon camera. And then there is the m.2 internal SSD drive, where you can buy 1TB for $135 US and these drives capture at 2 times the speed of the best SD cards. ( SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC 300MB/s UHS-II U3 memory cards cost $210 US, so you would have to spend $1680 US to equal the storage space of ONE 1TB $135 US m.2 SSD drive that writes at 530MB/s )

Can't agree more with all the comments about comparing mirror-less cameras with camcorders, I really honestly think people forget or are unaware that camcorders are responsible for most of what they see on TV. Also, I'd rather have an all in one camcorder then be limited to the lens I can afford; that not always has the most flexibility and all the accessories I'd have to buy just for simple features like professional audio inputs and ND filters. Camcorders just make sense. But you don't see them as often on KZbin because so many people are obsessed with mirror-less cameras, of which I have no idea why. They're expensive, cumbersome, lack so many professional features and become outdated really fast. While a lot of TV production and news stations use the same camcorders for upwards of five years or more before buying a new one. In regards to the XF705, I think its VERY overpriced and the video quality just does not justify that high price tag. I've been looking at the JVC-GYHC500 and I'm probably going to buy it when it's finally released. Its cheaper but doesn't seem to lack any features or quality. A much better deal in my opinion. My first choice however was the Panasonic S1H, but after putting together all the things I was going to need just to use it(which totaled $6,000)The JVC camcorder just made a lot more sense. Its $3,500 and only needs a SSD and the caddy to use it with the camera. All together I'm looking at $4,500. I think camcorders need more attention on KZbin, thanks ProAVTV for doing this review. We need more of this. Hopefully you guys can do a review about the JVC camera, I'd love to see that!

As you encourage questions, how about footage quality compared to the Canon XA11? I know the question sounds almost ridiculous given the totally different market segment of these two camcorders. Let me tell you that I had the same kind of question regarding photography, and I went for the Canon 5D after various consumer cameras. I never regretted the choice, had first the Mark II, then upgraded to the Mark IV. But my problem is with video. I find it really counter-intuitive to shoot video with an SLR, to a point it gets me off any inspiration for a good video. That is why I am looking at a dedicated video cam again. Thank you!

Nice presentation, Carl--as always. A simple question or two. How easy might the LCD be to see in bright sun? Has a hood been provided for that as an accessory. Next, how bearable is the EVF to use? Can you please update a video of the XF705 using the Ninja 5 (tutorial) until the H265 is at last been updated by Adobe, we, and future users of the XF705, buyers need support to use the XF705.

I do have a question: size-wise, do you see canon coming in with a smaller version of this camera, to perhaps "next gen" the XF200/205 in the way that this did to the 305? I've been shooting with the 205 for a few years, and I've got specific needs, and it's almost perfect for me in a number of ways, size being the main one. I do 90% handheld, and I need the "mid-sized" body of the 200-205. My main complaints are its very small sensor (leading to sub-par low light performance) and the lack of a manual HD filter. And the XF400/405 seemed so plug-n-play, consumer oriented that it was a huge disappointment (that horrific eyepiece seems to have been added only begrudgingly). Thanks!

Hi Carl, nice review! I'd like to know if in HD at 120fps the autofocus works (c200 doesn't), and what do you think about the image quality comparing to C200? @ProAVTV
@ProAVTV 6 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I didn't test AF in 120fps, I will next time I get my hands on the camera I think the image will hold up very well against the C200, its probably better than the MP4 side of the camera to be honest. Its to big a camera to use with one hand.. you'd need an XF405 for that. One hand and rest it on your shoulder maybe? Carl

@@ProAVTV Thanks, I really like the short footage that you've shot, I think it shows a good image between the Mp4 and RAW of the C200, the XF405 footage it's not so convincing to intercut the C200 I think, I'm waiting for more tests. Do you know when the XF705 will be out? Canon says December, I'd like to know more about it, at the beginning of the next month or at the end? Thanks again! Have a nice day! :-)

The PXW-Z280 is like a UHD version of the FHD PMW-300, which in turn was an improvement over the CineAlta PMW-EX3/EX1. The thing is, none of these camcorders mentioned feature a true global shutter, but instead feature faster-than-average rolling shutters. The fixed lenses on the PXW-Z280 is also not going to deliver you UHD (3840x2160) resolution onto those Exmor R 1/2" CMOS sensors, as in order to do that, your lens would require a resolving power of 266 lp/mm (533 l/mm). Now, do you really think Sony would be able to put a lens like that onto a camcorder under $10,000 like the PXW-Z280?

Thank you so much for your very professional reviews. Do you maybe know why Canon never went for prores and ssd's? Canon has over the years pushed all kind of media but I see that in reality a lot of these Atomos recorders are used because it is just so convenient to have footage ready in prores 422. It would be so much more convenient if canon could provide this kind of solution just like JVC did with the GY-HC550. That camera costs half of the xf705 so it cant be because of licence costs.

You might be confusing codec and wrapper. This is a H.265 codec inside a .MXF wrapper The more common kind of H.265 in Go pro's, streaming etc. is in a .MP4 or .MOV wrapper It should be relatively simple for apple, adobe etc. to give support. So hopefully should happen soon. Carl

@@ProAVTV having access to manufacturers representative will it be possible for you to make a video explaining why do some brands come up with unnecessary proprietary solutions? Just imagine the success of C200 with BMD menues and codec options.

So, I have been using the Panasonic DVX200 for two years now. Very similar features as this Canon and similar price to the JVC HC500 but with the great advantage of a four thirds sensor meaning better low light capabilities and shallower depth of field. So, I have been in Canon’s future of cameras for a couple of years already? Give me a break, canon is producing the past of camcorders, making a press release that suggests that it is somehow ‘new’ and futuristic, putting double the price of the competition on it, and this review lauds it as the next big step? It is nice that Canon is using H265. It is nice that Canon is finally trying to catch up, but at the cutting edge of where camcorders are going it certainly is not. Time to look at other camcorders that are really leading the way rather than listening to the spin from Canon.
