*Fun Fact:* Punjab province/state is not exclusive to India, Pakistan too has a larger Punjab province with sizeable Sikh population, however Khalistanis only want land carved out of India, and not Pakistan, because Khalistan is a project by Pakistan under its _"Bleed India by 1000 cuts"_ doctrine. I'm neither Indian nor Canadian, but I am fascinated by how immigrant groups are often much more nationalistic and radical than the people back home. In particular, I'm from Croatia and my impression is that immigrant Croatians in Germany and Australia often tend to care much, much more about historical issues and our grudges with our neighbors than most people that I know in Croatia.

Yes, even back here in India, only a minuscule portion of the Sikh population entertains the notion of Khalistan. Sikhs are widely regarded as exemplary citizens, with a significant presence in various spheres - from holding the position of Prime Minister and high-ranking politicians to commanding all three branches of the armed forces. They are well-represented in academia, sports, and the entertainment industry, and staunch patriots by raising three distinct regiments in the Indian Army from the state of Punjab alone. We often joke about that when Canadian Sikhs want to make Khalistan, not Indians so why don't they make that in their own homeland that is Canada. Most of Canada's land is Khali Sthan (empty space) anyway.

Sikh in India are revered. As a woman in India, having a Sikh brother in a room, has an automatic response of being safe. Actually, Sikhs are highly regarded in India compared to others due to their generally hardworking and empathetic nature. Very recently did I learn about Khalistani terrorism in India (clue: it doesn't exist in India at all). Unfortunately, due to racism sponsored apathy, Canada ended up accumulating extremists. Do not know whether it is good for Canadian society or not (clue: it isn't good). As far as India is concerned, we are more than happy to share space with our Sikh brethren in our home country.

Seems like Canada accepted a lot more refugees during and after the anti-Sikh riots/ethnic cleansing in the 1980s than other countries. That paired with the fact that most Canadians live in just a couple cities like Toronto or Surrey meant that all these refugees fleeing violence all clustered together and kept that hotbed of extremism alive in Canada while the movement died out everywhere else.

Having lived in both Canada and now Australia I can explain some differences: Australia has been more nationalistic whereas Canada is based more on tribalism. This tribalism has manifested itself in the 1984 Multiculturalism Act and created even further division in society. It has been exploited by unvetted Sikh migrants who enter politics in order to further the interests of their own tribe. Australia is protected from foreign interest groups usurping power by section 44 of the Australian constitution. The referendum next week will be a test if Australians are willing to allow a special interest group (i.e. Marcia Langdon) from gaining control over the federal government in order to drive her own agenda. If this tradition is so deserving of pride and admiration why wouldn't they make life better in Punjab province rather than moving to another country and then not adopting the traditions there? I think it's very fair to say that the reverse would not be very welcome at all, Canadians traveling to that part of the world and retaining their native North American freedoms culture and traditions would be very unwelcome and most likely in danger. Just looking at headline gdp figures doesn't tell one the full reality of life in India or Punjab, in Punjab the higher education institutions tend to be underfunded, while the state like much of the country has an unemployment problem with the state economy being relatively stagnant in comparison to the national economy (state went from having one of the highest per capita gdp in the country in the 80s-90s to being close to national average today), all of this is ignoring the agricultural situation or state politics.

The one gripe I do have is that almost no Canadian commentators are covering the history of the khalistan movement, which makes Quebec separatism look like a bar fight. The violation of the holiest Sikh shrine in 1984 by sending in the army was to smoke out armed insurgents who were hiding in it. In response, they assassinated the sitting prime minister of India. Her party responded with a pogrom against Sikhs in Delhi, which hugely strengthened the Khalistan movement, which in a few years became a full fledged armed insurgency in Punjab which killed many thousands, assassinated elected leaders and got funding from the Diaspora in Canada, UK etc. Canadians can better understand the Indian state's paranoia by comparing the khalistan movement to the IRA, not to Quebec separatism. If the IRA were to start reviving and organizing today, I'm sure the British govt wouldn't be too happy about it.

I did not know about the 1985 airplane terrorist attack. It reminds me of in 2020, when Iran attempted to shoot a missile at an American air force base, but accidentally shot down a civilian jet plane flying from Tehran to Canada, and mostly carrying Iranian-Canadians who were traveling home to Canada after visiting family in Iran. I always thought it was a tragedy how quickly western media glossed over hundreds of Canadians being murdered by the Iranian government, I thought if Iran had shot down a plane full of white Canadians, there would be more of a fuss. A very balanced presentation. There is one point that is missed in the ending. In India, both parties are united on this issue (a rare occurence). I suspect it's a religious politics problem within some temples across Canada. I worked with one Sikh who told me his temple came knocking on his front door after he stopped attending. They had the gall of guilt tripping him and implying he was a bad Sikh if he didn't show support by giving them a donation. There are political factions sometimes when it comes to who runs the local temple. When a community has bad leadership all the little people suffer. All of Canada has the same problem right now.

India imports 30% of all the Canadian pulses from Canadian most agarian city. It might get replaced. Canada have lot to loose in this relationship issue.

This video is only pandering to a certain section of Canada. Regarding the statement about Indian students, it was frankly an infantile statement accusing India of damaging the educational link. The advisory issued(that’s the correct term) was cautioning Indian students to take care as there was a lot of violent protests targeting Indian citizens at that time. As an Indian currently in Canada, I have to say this was incredibly balanced and well thought out. The insight on how political candidates are selected is much appreciated. I just have a few additional thoughts to add, which might give you and your viewers some insight. 1. As a ''post-nation'' state, Canada's biggest long term threat is going to be to integrate immigrants into its own political culture and preventing them from bringing their grievances from home. Former BC Premier Ujjal Dosanjh did a brilliant podcast on this topic recently. One of the main reasons for the Indian government's response is that it is Canadian citizens in Canada who are raking up Indian political issues. Since India constitutionally prohibits multiple citizenship, the Khalistanis in Canada are by definition ''foreigners'' and have no right to participate in Indian politics. Thus Khalistanis would be better serve participating in Canadian politics instead of raking up issues of Indian politics from Canada. 2. What the Canadian government and the West doesn't realize is that the definition of a ''democracy'' is a little different in India compared to the West. I would consider India to be an ''electoral'' democracy and nothing else. Governments and public institutions are often authoritarian by design and our constitution limits freedom of speech and expression for secessionism, threats to public order and calls to violence. This is seen as ''undemocratic'' in the West but by large portions of Indian voters as necessary evils to maintain territorial integrity and public order. The only opportunity Indians get to participate in the process of governance is in federal or state elections. In my mind, Indian culture is generally more deferential to hierarchy and authority similar like say China, Japan or Korea, none of which have a long history of democracy, in the case of Japan only after WWII. This does not change the fact that Modi is genuinely popular, that elections are free and fair and that there is a legitimate opposition in India unlike in Russia, China or Iran. Confusing cultural authoritarianism with lack of democracy demonstrates a lack of understanding in the West about the different ''flavours'' of democracy. 3. The Indian population is by and large united on issues of foreign policy and zero tolerance of threats of territorial integrity. Literally every opposition party like the Congress (which ironically presided over the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a blot on our history) supports the government's stand. There is broad consensus on issues like non-alignment in the Ukraine war and buying oil and weapons from Russia and being tough on nations that harbour separatists that threaten Indian territorial integrity. India does not have a history of expansionist foreign invasions like most of the West does. Thus any lecturing by the West when we are trying to protect territorial integrity rejected by all people in the political spectrum. 4. Punjab is actually a broader region that includes an entire province of present day Pakistan. Punjab historically has had a roughly 1/3rd split b/w Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus on a roughly West to East direction. Hundreds of thousands of Sikhs left Western (Muslim majority) Punjab after partition and fled to India. One striking feature of the Khalistan movement is the complete absence of their demands for any part of Pakistan in their homeland. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism was born in Nankana Sahib, in present day Pakistan. He died at Kartarupur Sahib, which is also in Pakistan. The capital of the Sikh Empire was in Lahore, present day Pakistan. In India this obviously demonstrates that the movement is funded and aided by Pakistan.

Also most people ignore how caste plays a bigger role than religion, 99.9% of Khalistanis are Sikhs of Jutt caste, which is just 18% of Punjab's population but they are extremely rich community that owns 85% land in Punjab. Almost all the major Sikh politicians in Canada are Jutts. I've met many Sikhs of different castes, Khatris, Rajputs, Ravidassiya and they are all pro India, most Jutt Sikhs are pro India too(for every Bhindranwale we have a KPS Gill) , but during the 80s and 90s a lot of anti India Jutts moved to Canada (and now they form a huge population there).

I'd like to think I'm knowledgeable about international politics, but I have say I had little idea of a Punjab independence movement. I know that Indira Gandhi was killed by her Sikh bodyguards, but thought that was revenge over the Golden Temple massacre. In the past it seemed that Sikhs were the elite in India - has that changed? Although I'm not familiar with the 'Khalistani' movement, there is no disgrace in wanting a separate homeland. If you can't campaign by peaceful means, then it's not really surprising violent groups will rise up.

@@rogink Sikhs do have a larger influence on India than their population numbers might suggest, and they are a well respected and sometimes idealized minority. I'm not sure I'd call them an elite though, and there have been instances of anti-Sikh rhetoric and violence (althought not as severe as some people claim). Mrs Gandhi's bodyguards did indeed kill her over the massacre at the Golden Temple. That incident was actually related to the Khalistan movement. The men holed up in the Temple were Khalistani terrorists, and the Indian military only resorted to violence after negotiations with the men inside failed. In fact, a Sikh Commander was put in charge of the operation on the groud in an attempt to help smooth over tensions. Unfortunately, a combination of the army's failure to adequately warn civilians of what they intended to do, and the use of civilian crowds as human shields by the terrorists, led to a large number of civilian killings, turning what should have been a fairly straightforward (albeit quite contentious) operation into a massacre and a tragedy.

Let me take you through its history. In 1947, our India was divided and two independent countries India and Pakistan were formed. Before partition, Punjab used to be a big state in which Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs used to live in equal numbers of 1/3. But at the time of partition, Punjab was also divided into two parts and Eastern Punjab (45%) came to India's part and Western Punjab (55%) went to Pakistan's part. Because Pakistan was divided in the name of Islam, almost all the Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan (Western Punjab) fled to Eastern Punjab, India. So your situation was such that in Indian Punjab, Hindus were in majority and Sikhs were in less population. But till now everything was correct. But now Pakistan enters here. Pakistan wanted Indian Kashmir and for this they fought two wars with India till 1965 but they did not get success. On the contrary, in 1971, Pakistan was divided into two pieces, Pakistan and Bangladesh, after which they decided to leave direct war and start non-conventional war. . For this, he worked to instigate Sikhs to create instability in India, supplied guns and drugs to Punjab's part, promoted separatism and started funding the separatists. *Often all the Khalistani and common Sikhs claim that they were tortured and massacred in 1984 but they do not tell the events before that* , let me tell you that. Before 1984, target killing and massacre of Hindus had become common in Punjab. The biggest leader of Khalistanis was General Singh Bhindranwale, under whom hundreds of terrorist attacks were carried out in which thousands of people lost their lives. Bhindranwale, the most prominent Khalistan leader, frequently used anti-Hindu rhetoric in his speeches. Noted Sikh journalist, Kushwant Singh, described Bhindranwale as a “hate monger” who routinely used hateful and inflammatory language against Hindus and exhorted every Sikh to “kill 32 Hindus to solve the Hindu-Sikh problem.” More than 10,000 Hindus were killed in Punjab by Khalistani terrorists, who stopped buses, entered them, identified those who were not wearing turbans and killed them. Hundreds of thousands of Hindus became refugees in their own country and went to neighboring states. And Sikhs become majority in Punjab Now coming to the issue of your Golden Temple massacre. This is the year 1984 when Khalistani terrorist General Singh Bhindranwala and his supporters captured Harvinder Sahib alias Golden Temple, the holiest site of the Sikhs, and took hundreds of people inside hostage. Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi ordered the Army to conduct an operation to free Harmandir Sahib from the clutches of terrorists and this operation was named Operation Blue Star. The Army did the same, they entered inside the Golden Temple and killed all the terrorists including General Singh Bhindranwala and the Golden Temple was liberated. Resentment increased among the Sikhs over the fact that firing was carried out in their most sacred place. After that, Indira Gandhi is shot dead by her own two Sikh bodyguards. This increases the hatred among the general public supporting Congress, as a result of which Anti-Sikh riots take place in Delhi and parts of Punjab in 1984, in which many innocent Sikh people were killed. That was the whole story of pre 1984.

There's an incredible ammount of similarities between the Canada-India conflict and the Sweden-Turkey conflict. There's similarly a significant number of Kurds in Sweden, and a tendency by politicians to be sympathetic to their plights leading to the downplaying of Kurdish terrorism in Turkey which (understandably) annoys the Turks. They've repeatedly demanded Kurds be extradited on terrorist charges, and Sweden has consistently refused. In our case, it blew up over the NATO accession veto. It's a complicated case - on the one hand, you can be sympathetic with the fury when Western countries shelter what (they perceive to be) terrorists and take a nonchalant attitude to what is a national security threat to them, on the other the actions/demands of those countries in response are unacceptable.

One big difference is that Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs are the same ethnicity. They intermarry often, speak the same language, the founders of Sikhism were all Hindus, etc. India's prime minister has been a Sikh. India's ambassador to America is also a Sikh, whom these Khalistanis want to kill. It isn't really like Kurds and Turks, who are very different cultures. This is kind of why there's no real Khalistan movement in India. It's all in Canada and Britain, from a small minority of people who intimidate the majority of Sikhs. There is a reason that Surrey is the most dangerous city in Canada. It's quite likely that eventually, if this radicalised faction truly manages to conquer Canadian Sikhs, the separatist demand will be on creating a Sikh country in Canada itself. Sikhs are already 2.2% in Canada and rising, while they're 1.6% in India.

The most suspicious thing is that these Khalistanis dont want the part of Punjab in Pakistan even though the Sikhs in Pakistan have been oppressed to the point that there are no Sikhs in Pakistan but these Khalistani only want a separate country from India. The most hilarious thing is that these Khalistanis are proposing a seperate country without its actual capital of Lahore in Pakistan. All this rather seems to be a plot against India rather than these Khalistanis actually wanting a seperate country. Bet even if their dream comes true and they have their own seperate country, will they leave Canada for it? I don't think so.

Something that leaves a question in my mind....why is most of the rhetoric of the Khalistani Movement targeted against India, while Pakistan is rarely mentioned. if we took a look at a historical religious census and a modern one, Sikhs have been persecuted much more in Pakistan than in India. The Khalistanis have released a map of their proposed land in which most of the land was outside Punjab in places where Sikhs never controlled and where Sikhs only constitute a negligible minority. However, they don’t show places in Pakistan which was part of the historical Sikh empire with the most important capital city of Lahore. The truth is that the Khalistan movement is a movement by the Pakistani ISI agency to avenge how India helped Bangladesh gain their independence.

Well its complicated and its a product of the fact that the modern Khalistani Movement is in part a consequence of the partition in more ways then you can imagine. I mean I could write a whole essay on this but the main points here would be that partition: 1) United the geographically dispersed Sikh Community. Or to be specific, the Sikh community was spread-out in Punjab pre-1947, and became concentrated following the division of Punjab in partition, 2) It violated promises made to the Sikh community and leadership in-exchange for their support in ensuring that a part of Punjab was going to be in India and 3) It fostered a sense of resentment towards the federal government for having allowed such an event (which later was re-framed in the form of Khalistani claims of Indian persecution)

I am a Christian, a doctor, living in Southern India. Well, these are my observations 1) Sikhs living in India and working in the government and Private sector are happy here 2) There are some rogues and gullible kids who are brainwashed and taken to Canada 3) India had 28 states but 70 % of Canadian student visas go to one state of Punjab. That state has a seperate Canadian consulate. Why? 4) Your government is taking their future voters from India and grooming them to be anti India. 5) Also, if they really want a seperate nation, why only from India when 60% of the erstwhile state of Punjab is with Pakistan, including their former capital of Lahore 6) These Khalistanis are involved in drug trade. Punjab is the state with maximum drug problem. Drugs are smuggled from Afghan- Pakistan side. 7) Similarly gun violence is highest in Punjab. 8) Now you know Jugmeets true motive. I am a secular citizen of India. I have nothing against Canada. I have lived in India all 40 yrs of my life and I have travelled the world. You failed to mention an important part of the history of Canada / Indian relations. Canada built the first nuclear reactor in India and was in the process of building CANDU reactors when Indira Gandhi used enriched material from the experimental reactor and detonated India's first nuclear bomb (1974). This was against the technology exchange agreement that Canada and India had signed. It was Trudeau senior who Gandhi stabbed in the back. This resulted in Canada ending all nuclear cooperation and essentially India took the CANDU designs and continued to develop them. It was only a couple of years ago that the two countries signed another agreement on nuclear cooperation. If you look at Indian government sites, India miraculously developed nuclear technology indigenously. I have yet to meet an Indian person who knows this story.

J.J., I was intrigued by the candidate selection process that parties in Canada use. It reminds me of the now-largely-extinct *caucus* process in some U.S. States. The only remnant of this is the way a few states, including Iowa, select delegates to the presidential nominating conventions.

As someone who once ran for political office I agree it’s an odd and antiquated system (to put it mildly). In my riding (where, by the way, my chosen party at the time traditionally comes in a distant third provincially and federally telling me there’s very few party supporters here) someone else signed up to be the representative shortly after me, meaning a nomination meeting was needed. I did try to sign people up but I really saw it as a silly exercise as, honestly, they’re not signing up for any positive thoughts on the party (as explained especially not in my riding) but just as “my friend” which goes against how I feel a democracy should function. Needless to say, at the nomination meeting the meeting was packed with her friends and I lost the nomination 12-3 (the three being me, my wife, and someone else). She did get less votes in the general election than I did in a previous (unsuccessful) school board run (which are non partisan) but as I said since my riding never votes for that party I was with I wasn’t expecting much.

I recall in 1990, just before I emigrated from my birthplace of Canada, I came out of a shop on Hastings Street in Vancouver and there was quite a radical group of Sikhs marching down Hastings street demanding a New Khalistan within the borders of British Columbia. My immediate reaction was anger, how could a group of people come into my country, to better their lives and now demand a peace of it. I do not receive much news from Canada here in Cape Town but your report bought me up to speed on just how far this issue has escalated or perhaps just how complacent my fellow Canadians have become in protecting their homeland.

Most? Not really. And technically if you're referring to the aboriginal inhabitants that's not the same. They didn't declare the land as a nation and declare borders. It was just a mostly empty space and people from all flocks of the world travelled to it. Even the different tribes fought each other. There was no unified land with modern day law.
