Canadian North Airlines is one of the largest airlines in Canada, and they have quite an interesting operation. As a 100% Inuit-owned airline, they serve the communities of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut with a fleet of 30 aircraft.
Today, let's take a look at the Canadian North fleet as of October 2021!

Wonder if it possible to do interviews with any of those pilots. Surely they must have some interesting stories about arctic flying people would enjoy.

I live in Iqaluit so I get to see the Canadian North jets fly out daily as they have a couple YFB-YOW flights daily, the older ATR’s that are mixed with cargo land super hard, just a couple days ago I was on one flying from Kinngait-Iqaluit and my god what a hard landing

I've just recently (within the past month) discovered aviation videos on here. So far you're one of my favourite creators. Last month I had to fly for the first time in years and it sort of sparked a new obsession with aircraft and air travel. Your videos are awesome!

Any chance for coverted MD8xF's coming in? Don't really think there is alot size-wise available to operate from gravel runway and they have been phased out in droves by DL, AA and G4 just over the last 2-3 years.

Was thinking the same...and the Md-90s would even offer better fuel economy
@ThePointblank
@ThePointblank 2 жыл бұрын
@@andreworiez8920 MD-90's would be a very poor choice; the reason why they are being retired in droves is because engine overhaul costs have skyrocketed because their engine is a unique type and shops to overhaul the engine have dwindled to just one. So they are being retired as engines time out. Ironically, the MD-80's are being given a slight lease on life because there's plenty of spare engines lying around, and still plenty of shops to work on the engines.

@@ThePointblank I have noticed in general how most of the rear-engine aircrafts have become almost obsolete, the 727s, DC-9s, 2 types of aircrafts which were dominating airports all over the US in the 1980s. Most American airlines including that one, United, TWA, Eastern, USAir, Northwest, Delta, and Continental had 727s as their main domestic US aircrafts. Now they're gone (as well as half of those airlines)
@andreworiez8920
@andreworiez8920 2 жыл бұрын
@@alvexok5523 Actually ALL of those airlines save 2, and yeah except for Delta's 717s the only rear engine aircraft are commuter jets

It will definitely be interesting to see how Canadian North handles the retirement of their gravel kit equipped 737… Air North flew one a while ago to be able to fly charters to Dawson City from Fairbanks which at the time was a gravel runway. When Dawson got their runway paved, Air North could use any of their 737’s for the service. But paving Dawson’s runway was considerably easier than it would be for the far flung arctic communities which have nothing for asphalt mixing, let alone the paving equipment and the maintenance of the runways down the road.

Right, and also, many inches to feet of snow to keep clear of the runways numerous months of the year, plus temperatures as low as -30 to -40 farenheit in mid-winter

@Michael Horgan, which 5T essentially already have as their ATR 42-300s can be converted into full cargo configuration. I think you're right. They'll simply do more freighter-only flights with the turboprops.

Up here in the Arctic, we need an ALL Inuk airline where they do not cancel at the SLIGHTEST bit of clouds in the sky. It would need to be located NOT in Frobisher Bay, Ontario. It is NOT Iqaluit, it is Frobisher Bay. It is NOT Nunavut, it is Ontario. Also, I seemed to notice Canadian Norths reliability went way down after Ms Igalaaq informed on air she would be switching jobs from News anchor to Canadian North Airlines a few years back. More like, Cancel It Everyday Airlines. Heres a helpful hint, cancellors, Clyde River weather ALWAYS gets better each and EVERY time a flight gets cancelled, wait for the weather and the plane will arrive here.

Hey Alex! Great content as always. Our 700's actually have 138 seats; the difference is that there is no "love seat" at the exit row, like our 300s have. 703 (our third 700, C-FHNN, has 140 seats, due to one less lavatory. 😉)

I'd think that MD-80s would be perfect for gravel operations... High set tail mounted engines would avoid F.O.D I would think.

I could have sworn I've been on their passenger 737-400 on a charter flight in AB. I could be mistaken though
@bpwest
@bpwest 2 жыл бұрын
The -400s do occasionally pop up elsewhere... the one -400 full passenger aircraft (C-FFNM) is usually based at YOW, but has on occasion picked up ad-hoc charter work to fly people across the country for various reasons - sometimes as a spare aircraft for other airlines that find themselves in need of an extra plane for something. It's very possible you took a ride on one in AB, but it'll depend on what your flight was for (the 400s haven't to my knowledge done any oil industry work).

Alex, you mentioned that Air Inuit was a "sister airline" of Canadian North, implying some common ownership. I didn't think they were related. What were you referring to?
@bpwest
@bpwest 2 жыл бұрын
Alex is correct - Air Inuit and Canadian North are sister airlines. Both are subsidiary companies of Makivik Corporation, based in Kuujjuaq/Nunavik. First Air was purchased by Makivik in 1990. Operationally however, they are entirely independent companies.

@willroswell
@willroswell 2 жыл бұрын
@@vintagesupermarkets5210 No it's just not offered at all for the time being. It wasn't really popular in terms of pax anyways. It was mostly freight from what I understand.
@vintagesupermarkets5210
@vintagesupermarkets5210 2 жыл бұрын
@@willroswell so I checked 5T's website and there's no more YUL-YFB direct service permanently. YUL pax now have to hop AC to YOW and connect all the time. I used to work for First Air +15 years ago and yes, YUL/YVP-YFB always carried far fewer pax than YOW-YFB...hence why it was only 3x weekly. Most YUL-YVP-YFB pax got off/on at YVP. An average of a dozen YUL pax continued to YFB and usually 1 or 2 pax would board at YVP for YFB.
