We are in New Caledonia, where we meet the Kanaks. A people divided into clans, with those of the land on one side and those of the sea on the other.
On the Isle of Pines, Marc meets the Vao clan, which has preserved the immemorial heritage of traditional pirogue (canoe) construction. Joseph, a master boatman is the last man on this archipelago still making the béréwai, he is passing on his knowledge to his son, Mike.
Extract from the documentary: “People of the sea: New Caledonia / Kanaks, the canoeing clan”
Direction: Matthieu Maillet
Production: DÉCOUPAGES & ARTE France
► Part 2: • New Caledonia: Passing...

These people looks just like my great grandfather. His history was he was a fisherman from an Island 🏝️ and him and his friends sailed and landed in Mozambique. They were young man. They enjoyed it there and my great grandfather and two others traveled to Zimbabwe and he met my great grandmother and settled down there and started having a family. Because my grandfather used to tell us where his father come from as I was small I can't remember where he said his father came from but my grandfather looked just like these people and his children too only that they have an African blood fixtures are changing a little bit even myself I have some fixtures like them. My grandfather had the same hair and my mother her siblings have the same hair too. I will show her this video and see if she can connect just like I did

@@user-xx1qz8vs4o I understand what you mean but if you never been to New Caledonia, please don't underestimate the will of the people to keep the traditions and still keep up with the world. Sure the big city of Noumea, the capital is just like any other city in the world, but still, melanisians do take their culture and traditions in consideration, and that is something to respect now-a-days. Humble but still Proud People. Always ready to help, without second thought. Oh and it's true, not many places like this in the world, it makes it almost Unique. Of course, like every other human being they, like good things, but will always choose human to material. It's beautiful!!!

The older gentleman reflects or little bit slow. Just the way it is with age. tree felling is a skill it's self. He was lucky. No disrespect . It's without a doubt he has great knowledge. My bung hole drawed up when the tree fell. I've cut lots of trees in my life time. Had some close calls . I once cut a willow tree I had no knowledge of the harvest of that particular tree. It split and kicked back. Now I have that knowledge of cutting one. Run forest run . I was lucky also because I fell during my dash. I watched the tree as I was laying on the ground. It's possible if I hadn't fell the tree would of hit me in my dash. But being close to the ground it cleared my body. Yep my bung hole drawed up. Even if your young as I was then shit happens. Some times knowledge is worth the experience some time's not. But I believe I would go to sea with this gentleman. But I wouldn't cut timber with him. I been in a similar situation with my dad. We were lifting some heavy steel with forklift I told him the rope was slipping he wouldn't stop I ran out of the building good thing I probably wouldn't be here today. But like I said his knowledge was great . But if you're around people alot you build up knowledge you can learn from each other. But never ever think your to old to learn. Pay attention to the younger people as well. Doesn't mean thier not wrong at times but thier right at times also. Always give credit where credit is due it can save your old bung. Young people don't be afraid to speak but always listen to your elders. I promise you they are wiser. Although they or wrong at times. We still must give respect at all times. Take care in this life we just have one. One father one mother you will miss them as I do. I'm happy I gave my dad respect. But not so much when I was young. I growed up in time. I thank God for that.

This seafaring technology - the outrigger canoe and Catamaran design - were developed over 10.000 years ago in the Halmahera plateau - MALUKU and Manado area!! The Alifuru people there are known to be the ancestors of Polynesians and the Malagasy people. Their chiefs were known to wed austronesian wives in political bonds which created the current Moluccan Phenotype (similar to black americans - blasians and lightskin blacks).

Waters around New Caledonia are surreal. Made a trip there from Fiji with my French language university class for our French immersion experience .... Fiji got beautiful waters but New Cale is on another level. I do feel for the natives though - the KANAKS, they're almost invisible on their own land due heavy French presence and influence but I hope they have a good share of the nickle wealth ... as NC is the world's 4th largest producer of nickle.
