The new Canon R camera was recently announced and many were expecting a real hit it out of the park camera. Well, for me it's not the hit I was hoping for. This video covers the Hits and MIsses of this new camera. I have an article on the Luminous-Landscape site that goes into more detail. Also, look for an extended Deep Dive video on the Canon R in the next few days.

I'm very happy with this camera. None of your misses bother my work at all. Also I'm glad this camera doesn't have IBS since that is irritable bowel syndrome. Have been shooting for a long time and never needed IS, IBIS, dual cards, 4k, eye AF etc.

Hopefully they’ll add what’s missing in this camera onto a future one..perhaps a Mark II version ..better wait for that one then.. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think this is a fantastic camera. Everyone complains on the crop issue. Well on the other hand You have the best AF in the world, beautyful picture right out the box, flip of screen and 4.2.2. on recorder and codec which is OK and C-log. I do not care for the crop considering what this camera can do, only the DUAL PIXEL AF alone is more important than the crop. BTW You have also crop on canon c200.

I prefer using the touch screen to move the focus point over the joystick... the joystick is a bit slow especially EOS R got so many focus position. I don't mind the single card slot, but I agree that if you are doing a paid photo shoot that cannot be redo, you should use a dual card slot and also a backup camera. I sometime shoot video of birds, so I welcome the crop 4K... in fact, I'm hoping Canon to include the crop video in their future APS-C sport/wildlife mirrorless camera. IMHO, there is no perfect camera and everyone have different requirement... your "miss" might be someone "hit", so do your own research and get the camera that meet most of your requirement.

I truly believe Canon did this on purpose since the are rumors for a PRO version. That is the version I think they may address the missing items discussed here. Very smart on their part. This camera was not meant to be a flagship rather a compliment to their 5D series camera. But if they do release a PRO version that will be their flagship at a much steeper cost though.

Ian Robinson at IR-Photo-Tours if u mean that a true professional can use any camera where since the art is based on skill, I agree. But all cameras are not made equal. Would u use this camera for a very highend wedding shoot? Prob not due to the 1 SD card. So skill is not a factor. IMHO this camera is not meant for that again more for the average user. Hence why they r coming out with a PRO version.

Ian Robinson at IR-Photo-Tours just to be clear I am not questioning the quality of this camera in performing on a highend job rather more the purpose of use. And yes for highend jobs having two cameras is essential. But I can almost be certain the primary camera used will be a dual sd in case of card failure. Can this camera do the job of course, but if this is your primary camera and u have card failure even with a backup camera u r screwed to the extent that u wont get back those pics lost. I do know some photographers who take that risk. Im just not one of them. Btw i do plan on getting this camera. I think it would do great for timelapses on manual mode.

The Canon EOS R, appears to have been produced to stop current Canon dslr users from switching to Sony. Those who have a ton of top L-glass, who would have to sell said glass, and lose a tidy bundle, in order to get the best out of an A7iii with native Sony lenses. Therefore, reviewing the EOS R, should be done (in my opinion) with this in mind. No wedding photographer, (or sports photographer) would be using the EOS R, as it has one card slot. Therefore high burst rate would not be that important to the users of this camera. Similarly with the gloves issue. The photographers who the EOS R is aimed at, will be expected to have a plethera of other Canon bodies, and will choose to use the right one, for the right job. The 4k vlogging-on-the-go thing is a strange complaint, as no FF mirrorless I can think of, can do what the EOS R can in this role. None has the fully articulating screen, and would be totally hit or miss from arms length anyway. What is the point of having a full sensor, if you cannot guarantee that your head and shoulders will be fully framed on it? I use a Canon M50, and it is perfect. You are absolutely right though, today we've come to rate cameras by the bar set by others. Unfortunately I think that this has led to a Spec-fest-centricness rather than what should be a Art-Of-Photography-centric fest, and camera users are becoming "spoiled" as you so rightly put it, by features. This is why camera reviews today should be taken with a pinch of salt, as most of the reviewers review the offerings completely out of context of why it was made in the first place, and many of the reviews are really just a: "Compared to Sony" camera comparison listing. I remember the debacle that was the Canon 6D2… One year on, some of those same "camera listings reviewers" who called it a laughable joke, are now referring to it as, the best ff vlogging camera.

@MrHelivids
@MrHelivids 6 жыл бұрын
.. "the misses ... that ... Canon would understand" I'm not sure for whom in the market the camera is actually for to evaluate the misses. It appears not to be the camera for sports and event photography, and it's not leading in resolution for landscapes compared to what is already offered by the competition. What market is then left by today's technology expectations? In what terms is it a justifiable upgrade, what is possible with this camera that would be new? The only aspect I like is the innovation with the adapters being OEM and functionality of slot in filters, functionality and reliability would beat a third party approach. Perhaps designing the new system with a set of lenses did blow out the time frame for the release, it feels the camera by feature set is a few years late.

Excellent and fast lenses for fullframe , mirrorless or not, are often big and heavy. Remember sigma art? I’m surprised, you criticize canon for making big L lenses. Do you think that’s fair?
@JohnDrummondPhoto
@JohnDrummondPhoto 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a criticism, but a fair observation. A lot of people think "mirrorless" equals light; and for less than full-frame systems, that's true. But anyone looking for high quality super-fast lenses in any full-frame system should expect they will be huge AF.

burak uestuen @Johnny4eyes is correct. Canon's lenses are excellent, but up until now mirrorless has been touted as being a light weight alternative to DSLR systems. Not saying this is a bad thing. Technology is a constant evolution and we are beginning to reach the end of the DSLR era.

I can agree with just about every hit and miss, I am thinking canon may have included just enough features to be good, all the while knowing that reviews would come out and then they can add only the features everyone is asking for, most of the reviews have all asked for the same things, IBIS, uncropped 4k, dual card slots, a joystick, & higher frame rates in continuous AF and in video for slow motion. maybe they'll listen, doubtful but we can hope and all we can do is ask

Great overview but a few obvious mistake. First, the lenses are not S line lenses, they are R lenses. Secondly it is unfair to complain about the size of the lenses. The 24-105 is similar size to the Sony equivalent. The f1.2 is a f1.2! Can’t see how they can make it smaller without compromising on quality.
@luminouslandscape
@luminouslandscape 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. They are RF lenses. Totally agree about the quality. It has just been a big talking point for a long time that mirrorless means light weight and portable, but we are now starting to close the gap between DSLRs and mirrorless cameras.
@ketsangtai
@ketsangtai 6 жыл бұрын
When people talk about mirrorless being smaller and I think most people are referring to camera bodies. The size of the lenses really depends on the sensor size they need to cover, aperture and the quality. I think Sony has already demonstrated that with their big GM lenses. Having said that, wide angle lenses can be made smaller due to shorter flange distance.

I still am not sold on any mirrorless, I guess I just dont need it, for instance I have a aperture stop bottom on my dslr that stops down the lens, although one mirrorless I am eyeballing is the panasonic G9, its got IBIS, 10-20 fps, great dials and controls, 180FPS in 1080, and 4K uncropped, and it takes the leica 100-400mm and makes itan effective 800mm without a teleconverter, and with out the weight and thousands of dollars that a canon 600-800mm lens would cost, I was shooting loons on a APS-c sensor with a 400mm lens that I rented and I wanted more reach, I might be ditching canon for panasonic, the canon full frame does not get me more telephoto reach, I dont get 180fps , or uncropped 4k, or IBIS, or dual card slots, so remind me why I should go canon FFM? I guess it all depends on what you need and what you want, no doubt the EOS R is a great camera, and the lenses and adapter really are incredible, but its not for me... yet....

You know. For all the good and bad that people say about every camera from every manufacturer the average guy who overspend on these things rarely get the full potential from it. Just like MS Word. Every one that has a computer has MS Office and barely gets it's full potential yet complains about one little thing here and there. I bought a gently used EOS 5D Mk II. I'm a weekend warrior. I shoot photos within 75 miles of my home. It's an old ams dated camera. It's way more camera than I need. I have an Nikon FM2n fully manual film camera and its more camera than I need. I'll bet one out of 1000 owners of any given mirrorless or old DSLR uses it for how it was really made.

For my needs I’m happy we Nikon users are getting smaller F1.8’s and zooms that are of good quality, possible very good in terms of image quality. I agree with you on the point of pride Noct, its a marking point, but that’s not a lens most will even entertain due to price. I personally own the 58 1.4G and love it for its size weight and character at 1.4. I’m sure Canon and Nikon Users are happy with the fact that they they will integrate a mirrorless system into their work flow without going to another system. I own the D850 with ten Nikon lines, for me the Z camera provides a nice option while I can transition slowly to mirrorless. Canon users probably feel the same. Its a good time to be a photographer.

Since your main criteria for evaluating a mirrorless camera is innovation instead of , of I don't know, how good a camera it is, I feel sad. Missed inovations: AF to F/11 (A really big deal) Full functionality of APS-C EF-S lenses !!!! Meaning an reasonable upgrade path to from APS-C to FF!!! Yeah that big road block for people wanting to move up is G O N E gone! And what is with the weight thing?!?!? Yeah a few people want a lighter camera. That is what 4/3 is for. Meanwhile other reviewers praise that fact that the R feels like a camera! Canon lenses are already well stabilized. So, yeah IBIS would be a nice bell or whistle (not both) but it is a minor consideration. Canon focused on the important features of a camera for their existing base. And they did a great job. On the whole the misses you focused on are all minor issues and some, like the touch screen issues, sounded just plain made up.

I talked right away about gloves problem, it's obvious. Why Olympus still has best design with dual dials. And when E-M1 was released 2013, I gave Olympus few times feedback after releasing Pro lenses to add feature when using AF to translate focus ring to bindable Fn ring. When going manual focus, you lose that feature but still... And please, we don't live 2001 when memory cards failed now and then, we live 2010+ and cards don't fail that you can't recover them. You might lose the shot that was being written at that second failure happened, but no other problems... Dual slot ain't important, it ain't critical. It is just one failure itself more... Just get cards, so then swap them and backup then on site getting them away from you. You more likely break camera than get unrecoverable card. RAID is not a backup, dual card slot is RAID! Does the shutter clear itself like Olympus SWF? No? Bad design... Nothing innovative there. Terrible actually because you will damage shutter that Canon can't shoot without well... That is their answer to lack of working sensor cleaning in industry a la Olympus. The screen hinge is terrible... How long it takes people get that Fuji got it perfect in X-T2 and X-T3? All required angles, fast, easy and functional.... And selfies are always done without seeing screen, you look a lens and not screen. That is the point.... And if you do vlogging, get the tripod, at camera 3-5m from you and now you have best perspective but you can't see screen... A miss in screen design. Now you pull smartphone out of pocket and connect to camera and you have remote screen and control at you palm with you at meters away from camera (Olympus allows 50-70m based line of sight). Vloggers, learn to use gear right, don't demands stupid side turning screens that are slow, fragile, block connections, can't see or touch from distance etc.... License the Fuji X-T2 design... It is best. Then tilting and then all other...

Great video, really like it! Obviously Canon missed a few things with its first mirrorless camera. But in this video, he forgot to compare the price with other competitors. Sony A9 £3,699, Nikon Z7 £3,399 vs Canon EOS R £2,349‎. It's a huge difference, don't expect the same features for this price like other competitors (like IBIS, better face tracking AF, better frame / sec etc). It's the around the same price like 5D Mark 4 (£2,449.99) maybe because of it's "old" sensor. So personally if I had Nikon gear with let's say D850, I wouldn't buy Nikon Z7 for £3,399. But if I would like to upgrade my Canon body, or buy a second body EOS R is a good option instead of 5D Mark 4... I think for this price range, it will be a reasonable option to get into the FF mirrorless world.

gerybubus - LOL! Your comparison doesn't make sense. You have no idea how fast the Sony A9 is, do you? Sony A9 is 20 fps whilst EOS R is only 3 fps. You should compare the EOS R to Sony's A7III. It's only £1,999 yet packed featurewise. Actually, Canon EOS R is not even really competing with the A7III, despite being £300 more.

But EVERYTHING came out that way. You know as well as I do that Canon consults with their customers to find out what is important to them. And that they are completely anal about what they consider their quality. Which is why the 5D3 outsold the D800 despite being more expensive. Being more usable have a value. You didn't say anything about the ergonomics, probably because that would be the main selling point for the professionals. This is a camera that can be comfortably used all day, all week. You are oblivious to the fact that there might be a heat budget as well as a parts budget. And you didn't say anything about other cameras becoming more or less uncomfortably hot when doing 4K video. ALL features in a camera have heat consequences. You complain about the cropped 4K, I don't think you mentioned that 4K works well with EF-S lenses (I've seen this demonstrated). And you didn't mention the 4K codec and data rates. Because of the high data rates the files might be more suitable for post processing than their competitors files. And if my memory serves me right, the 4K stream is a stream of images. So 4K can be used as a 30 fps camera. Admittedly with a rolling shutter. The missing slot is simply that time as passed and I suspect that most photographers are shooting tethered. Which is why the camera connects with both WI-FI and USB to a computer. It is time to think about changing your workflow. And to me this comes over like a camera for protected environments despite having weather sealing. The video came out as if it was made by someone who consider being able to charge their iPhone as having technical insight. The camera was probably released a bit early because of the Nikons. It is a message to the Canon customers and I suspect that the customers like what they see.

Really?There was a lot of thought to make a camera that costs that much in 2018 with ONE card slot?Really?That's something a 10 year old could figure out.In fact,My $700 Sony from 2013-14 had two slots.That's total crap,because it's not as if this was something they had to actually develop from scratch,and yes,they should have a joystick,even thought that stupid cheap strap should be tossed in a trashcan.When we pay that much for a camera,we can at least give it nice accessories.I would get the EOS R if it costs $800 or so,not more.

Finally they offer the 6Dii they should have offered but still only 1 card - why? To keep selling the 5div and the ancient sensor with 2 cards and to milk that sensor to death and even beyond -like milking a zombie. DO they have the engineering and patent chops to improve - I think not, nice glass, old sensors -way behind at this point for what should be a dynamic range monster BY NOW. But who even knows if Nikon will survive at all, and did Sony make a mistake by not having a larger diameter?
@andreasboger8261
@andreasboger8261 6 жыл бұрын
John jon, on your question: I think not. It is still bigger (46 mm) than the current Nikon F-mount diameter (44 mm). As both, Nikon and Canon, claim, the advantage of the bigger mount diameter is to be able to build insanely fast glass, such as f/0.9. I think that nowadays it is not necessary to use such lenses: To get more background separation it is more effective to increase the focal length than the aperture. For low light shooting, today and even more in the future, there is high ISO. So why bother with big and heavy glass? Only for Canon it makes sense: to counteract their weak sensors.

Your review seems to be simply a spec comparison. That is silly from a practical standpoint and leads to silly complaints. As an obvious example your complaint about your camera strap being in the way of using the camera in portrait mode. Duh, most straps have a bottom connector which allows you to hang the camera toward your back. The 4K spec is not an issue. Use a 16-35 lens like the Canon 4L. It works extremely well in 4K if you would want to vlog with a camera this heavy. I am brand agnostic. As an academic, I really dislike reviews that focus on form over substance. You don't even discuss picture fidelity. This is the central case of what cameras are for. You can do better than this. The whole idea of hit and miss is overly subjective. Describe the camera and how it works. Jeez.

if the camera had dual cards I would have gotten the camera, even though is a bit slow for me. Since it does not, and at the same time it requires a new set of lenses, that means I m no longer tied to canon. I have ordered the A7iii instead with a lens, at the same money canon asks for this. Canon has made its business decisions, I have made mine, it is not personal :) . Great points here.

Canon seems not to be able to catchup in sensor tech. They still can’t read out 4k video in full frame mode. It’s obviously not a problem for smaller sensors, e.g. all the smartphones, but less trivial on bigger sensors. I think it’s a heat problem, which only sony seems to manage.
@Davitor1

Andreas Boger most of Sony users who really use their cameras are still experiencing heating problems. The camera just shuts down.
@andreasboger8261
@andreasboger8261 6 жыл бұрын
Sure, the first two generations of Alpha cameras were prone to that, not the third, including the A9. There are not many genuine imaging-sensor manufacturers out there. Canon, one of them, decided from early on to build their own sensors. I think just the very first Canon DSLR had a non Canon sensor from Kodak. And for the first about ten years they were pretty competitive, particularly in manufacturing costs, because they were the first to embrace the CMOS technology. Long before all the others, which were building CCDs. Since the rest of the industry transitioned to CMOS sensors, the relative deficits of Canon sensors became more and more apparent, and they all seem to originate in the electrical efficiency. Hence the lack in dynamic range, signal to noise ratio and (probably) read out speed (alongside reasonable heat dissipation). Is there any other sensor manufacturer besides Sony, who can do 4k video on big sensors, bigger than APS-C? Nikon sensors are manufactured by Sony, by the way.
@Davitor1
@Davitor1 6 жыл бұрын
Andreas Boger yes I know and from what I have heard it may be a cost issue for Canon. Canon can also just give up and purchase this sensor from Sony which means they could not compete with it. Even Apple the biggest of tech companies had to compromise with their display, so no big deal. But personally I’m not a big fan of HDR which is what all this tech is leading to. For me enhancement of shadows are the soul of a photography.
@andreasboger8261
@andreasboger8261 6 жыл бұрын
David Ramos I see your point. Firstly, “HDR” is a matter of taste and secondly, a sensor with high DR doesn’t necessarily lead to HDR pictures, it depends on the post processing. In fact, HDR pictures appeared even before the sensors reached such high dynamic range. Photoshop made it possible to combine several exposures and to flatten the gamma curve to crunch a big DR into a smaller one. I’m also not a fan of such aggressive tone mapping, as one can observe nowadays everywhere: “bring up the shadows, bring down the highlights”, Lightroom makes it easy for everyone. But it may be a temporary fashion. On the other hand, a sensor with a high DR gives you the opportunity to use higher sensitivity, i.e. ISO values. As the sensitivity goes up, the effective DR goes down. Therefore it is good to start with a higher DR at base sensitivity. That’s the image capture side. On the image reproduction side there is also progress, as the displays are getting more and more DR, i.e. contrast ration. Therefore there is less and less need for “HDR pictures” with compressed DR. Only the printing of stills is pretty limited to a relatively low DR. But ho prints nowadays? I think, those people don’t like HDR effects either.
