The Cape Wrath Trail 2021 | Part 1: Midge Tea

In August 2021, we disembarked from the Camusnagaul Ferry and set off on what has been described as the Toughest Hike in Britain. Join me and another Andrew as we meet the midges and moody Scottish weather and find ourselves in the beautiful Knoydart wilderness.

Great film. Reminds ne of the trail last May. You made me chuckle when you camped by the large rock face between sourlies and Barrisdale. That is the mother ship for tics. I met a hiker camping there absolutely coveted in tiks. I've gotta ask...why go midgey season? It's horrific😂 Happy hiking and thks for sharing

Thanks! Covid put an end to our original plans in the Alps, so Cape Wrath was a last minute change of plans. Would definitely recommend doing it in May instead but it's more entertaining to watch us do it in midge season!

Hi Andrew, what’s your thoughts on the best approach to footwear on the CWT?

Hi Robert, I went with Altra trail runners, but this won't work for everybody. I had wet feet as soon as I walked through ankle-high wet grass - usually within the first five minutes every morning! Though my sealskinz waterproof socks helped a lot. On the flipside, I find them comfortable, they dried off quickly and I didn't get a single blister. The other Andrew brought waterproof shoes which kept his feet dry for longer but took forever to dry out after a river crossing. Most people I met were wearing sturdy leather boots which I find really uncomfortable. A couple brought flip flops for river crossings - seems like a lot of faff but worked for them. I could probably write a whole essay on this topic! Hope this helps. Cheers -Andrew
