@@andrewanderson68 unfortunately, when I did the laugavegur and fimm two weeks ago the weather was dreadful. Really challenging with hail, rain, snow and thick fog, especially on the highest point of the fimm. Unable to pitch our tent at some of the huts we were forced to complete both treks in just 4 days. Too much really, especially at my age (58). But still fabulous.

awesome video ! i just booked the Laugavegur trail & fimmvörðuháls trail today . ( i found availability for next week , very last minute ) were you able to get any water at the Baldvinsskáli hut ? electricity to charge ? another video i watched the person was able to get water and charge (for a fee ) everywhere else i read says no water to power . what was your experience ? ( and if you also stayed in the huts along the Laugavegur trail were you able to charge anything at any of the huts ? let me know . thanks

Thanks for watching. There was no running water or electricity at the hut as far as I remember, but I didn't need any as I brought a power bank and enough water with me. I didn't stay in any of the other huts on the Laugavegur but as far as I know none have electricity. Enjoy!

Hey Andrew, I hope you well. I watched all your Iceland videos, well done friend, some nice footage. Started watching bow TMB series, I want to ask can yiu camp on Col de Tricot? It will be my first day just after I will land so I dont want to do long day and not fancy for designated areas down in refugee, so though could pitch in col. Is there some flat spot? Thank you ( as I will go thru videos maybe will have more questions 😅)
@andrewanderson68
@andrewanderson68 3 ай бұрын
Hey Lucy, ask away! I'll try and remember what I can :D Col de Tricot - there's a small flat area on the col, right on the path, you could probably squeeze a pitch there. I remember most of the way up is quite steep, maybe a couple of places just past the suspension bridge overlooking the glacier. The refuge areas didn't seem too busy, but it was a covid year so that might be why. I'm some of the way through your Skye trip, thank you for the shout out!

Great videos, I think you could have combined all 4 parts into just one, but I enjoyed everything. I've hiked in the Ecrins a lot, only day hikes though. But I know the GR54 is one of toughest in France, alongside the GR20 in Corsica. The specificity of the Ecrins is that everything is incredibly steep with narrow paths. They just don't have the budget to maintain it that much, not like the Great Walks in New Zealand for example. My favorite areas are in the West, near Le Désert and all around the Meije. The South is a bit too dry and rocky for my liking, but it's still spectacular. If you're looking for more spectacular mountains in France, don't miss the Mercantour (a national parc as well), the Queyras (smaller but my favorite area, very authentic with minimal human impact), or the Vallée de la Clarée (another small area, just north of Briançon. I don't like the areas around Chamonix, it's just too touristy (it looks like most of the Dolomites). Vanoise has some nice secret spots, but too much is just scarred by the presence of so many ski resorts. And there are smaller mountain ranges that foreigners almost never visit : Belledonne, Chartreuse, Bauges, Vercors, or Devoluy, that are all worth it. The variety of landscapes is insane in the french alps. And you don't have to pay anything to visit.

Thanks Nicolas, lots of valuable info in your comment. France is a great place for hiking and I particularly like the attitude to wild camping, I'll definitely be back again. I'm glad to hear good things about Queyras as I'd like to do the GR58 someday!
@nicolasbertin8552
@nicolasbertin8552 7 ай бұрын
@@andrewanderson68 The Queyras doesn't disappoint. The best time of year to visit is Autumn, end of September till the end of October especially if you can catch the larches with their orange coat. It is tricky to predict when they turn orange though, and sometimes they do it so late, the first big snow has already fallen. But of course Summer is better if you wanna enjoy that refuge food.
