This boy is being a little too modest... I did FOH for Biffy (at Ruby Tuesdays in Irvine 1997) a handful of times...when they were 15 years old...and they blew everyone else away. They were monstrously talented even then. But talent aside, my band did the UK toilet tour the same time as Biffy, and I can absolutely assure everyone that they were the hardest working band out there. They toured hard, and constantly. Their perseverance and commitment to their fans is simply second to none. If you're a musician/songwriter, you cannot have anything but admiration for these guys, regardless if you like rock or not. The work ethic and commitment is everything in music, and they have that and the talent in spades.

All this talk about 3 piece but no one is mentioning their 4th touring member, Mike vennart. Currently of empire state bastard and formerly of oceansize. The man’s a legend.

A nice interview. James is such a great person. He even chatted with me behind a venue after a concert about music and also my artwork inspired by Biffy Clyro song Re-arrange, like if I would be an artist friend. Thanks for being so modest and kind, James. I will never forget that.

Biffy are one of those bands that I’ve been aware of for years, and I have friends who are big fans and yet I don’t think I’ve ever listened to any of their music for no particular reason. I’m going to put that straight once I’ve finished the rest of the interview

You're seriously missing out. I was the same a few years ago and had them pigeonholed as some sort of stadium rock type band so wasn't that interested. I am now a massive fan and happy to admit that I was clueless until I started working through their back catalogue 🤣

Remember me and my pals following Biffy around playing various pubs and clubs in Glasgow when they were unsigned and doing their EP with Stow College. Bumped into them at gigs a few times too. Always really sound guys to chat to. Great to see how far they've come and how unchanged they are. Still remember how good they were in Sleazy's and Tuts back in the day. Mon the Biff!

These are my favourite shows. Would love to see more british artists on here. When you see your hero's on stage, you dont consider they're also gear nuts as well. You just enjoy the music. But its nice to hear what they have to say along with what gear they're into.

I missed this! Got a tip of this video on Philip McKnight's latest live stream. I love Biffy Clyro! I got into them in 2014, and in March this year I really got into them again, so much that I haven't listened to anything else since then. And now it's June. Well, I did listen three or four albums by other artists this week, but that's a drop in the ocean. It's as if I had so much Biffy to rediscover.

Funny how you go full circle with gear. My first "propper" bass rig was a Washburn Axxess XS-4 into a Trace 7215 SM in the early 90's. Now having gone through almost everything (Ampeg, Warwick and Orange bass amps and Fender, Warwick, Spector, Musicman, Gibson bassses) at the end of my playing days I dug out that old Washburn and picked up a Trace Elliot GP12SMX...

I've always maintained that if Biffy were from LA instead of Kilmarnock they'd be global megastars. And they'd probably be arseholes too. Thankfully, they're neither of those things. EDIT - some of the comments to this video are mindboggling.

I can't stomach musicians who try and pretend as if FX pedals play for you or something- as if it's cheating somehow- how stupid. Some of the best bands/musicians in the world used tons of FX- Hendrix, Tool, King Crimson, you name it- they used FX. FX are tools- that's it, and without someone who knows what they're doing with them- they sound horrible, and ppl don't react well to them. So, this idea that some song is only popular due to an effect used- is b.s. It's popular because ppl like the song, the effect used is only a small part of that. Don't believe me? Use the same effect and write us a hit then- what are you waiting for? All you need is the pedal- right?
