A note on recording Tommy's guitar: All the sound you hear from Tommy's guitar in this video comes from the pickup system in his Maton, recorded via the Direct Input on the AER Compact 60 (discussed at 54:35 - link in description). You may have noticed the microphone in front of the soundhole but it may not come as a surprise to learn that that's not particularly effective when there's a cover over the soundhole. Tommy covers the soundhole so he can get the most out of the microphone pickup by cranking it up (explained at 58:30).

Saw Tommy in a Pub, well known for it's music, in an Irish town called Boyle. It's not the biggest town in the world but that night every guitar player in a 40 mile radius was in the first 10 rows. The guy is an awesome player, but so humble. The highlight was when some wag shouted "can you do anything Irish", and Tommy pauses a moment then says "I can blow up yer car mate!". After a short stunned silence everyone fell about the place laughing. You have to have a personality to get away with that!

When my son was 6 years old I took him to see Tommy, when he made an appearance in Blackpool, UK. We sat right at the front and Tommy regularly smiled at my son during the concert. Towards the end of the evening he addressed my son directly and dedicated a song to him, as by now it was very late in the evening but my son was still full of life and enjoying the gig. He said something along the lines of "this is for the little lad at the front, so he can remember the time when Tommy Emmanuel played two songs at once." Tommy then played Dixie/Yankee Doodle Dandy, both melodies simultaneously!!! What a guy and what a superb artist.

Never heard of him, never liked acoustic as it was “inferior” to my shred......never heard his stuff. We went to an awful run down venue, take your own cans of beer, and out he came. I laughed for 2 hours, not at his jokes (which were funny), but because I was completely mind blown, I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing, and laughing was my body’s way of saying “holy mother of Jesus Jeffrey’s Jones” ........ I bought the tab book after the gig, still got it. I then proceeded to play electric for another 20 years, and now, I have grown up. I am now totally focussed on Tommy, and will dedicate the next 20 years to this amazing music. I always listened to Tommy since that day, and always rated him as the best guitar player. I had the distinct honour of being Phil’s live sound engineer for a few years before his untimely death and can say that there’s no one in the ‘professional’ muso world more down to earth, honest, and pleasurable than the Emmanuel family to work for. Vale Phil ‘the wiz’, and monster respect tommy. Love your work brother.

I first saw Tommy and his brother Phil play together as '' The Emmanuel Brothers '' in a very old 18th century pub in Sydney Australia called the Governors Pleasure back in 1978 and it was a great venue to go to on a Friday and Saturday night and was blown away by them, and was a fan from that day on and I'm still his biggest fan as we all are and love him heaps ! Sadly the Pub is no longer there but I have great memories to remember of those days with my friends and just '' loving the music '' Thanks so much Tommy !

I first hear Tommy play in 1975 in Sydney. He was checking guitars out in a shop. By the time he finished the shop was full of guitarists with their jaws on the ground. He was one of the best then.

Superb interview. You get the sense that he's likely uncomfortable when he doesn't have a guitar in his hands. The fact that he played almost throughout the entire interview, shows how much this is a part of his soul. Absolutely brilliant.

I used to have a cassette tape many years ago called “Goldrush:Live at Last”. This was Tommy and Phil’s band in Australia in the 70’s and they were incredible. As he says about Phil in this interview, they were a cohesive unit and at times were one musician. Tremendous. RIP Phil Emmanuel

Finally, Lee! You get the best guitarist in the world on! Sit back and watch in Awe!.. He really is that good! Guitarists out there, if you ever get a chance... go see him live in concert! He's inspirational! (although he might bruise your ego and make you want to play drums, trumpet, clarinet or any other musical instrument!) First time I saw him in the 90s I went home, took a long hard look at my strat!.... He plays a mean Telecaster too! :-( nooo! Txs TE, Lee and Andersons!

10 seconds into Tommys playing and tears rolled down my face from sheer emotion not jealously. He is beyond amazing with the guitar. I love a lot of guitar players but Tommy really is as one with his instrument. The best Captain meets ever and ive enjoyed a few..

Tommy signed my Little Martin and sang happy birthday on my 70th birthday. A Meet and Greet I will never forget ! He has a sincerity and made me feel like this mattered . There was another person there who was a Tommy follower for his shows. I had trouble playing the strings Tommy touched like a teenager !!

I am study as a chemist, but a year ago I accidently picked up a guitar and started learning by myself. Now I can play a few simple fingerstyle tunes like Windy and Warm or House of Rising sun. I don t want to be a scientist or something like this. But I enjoy playing guitar well, playing with passion(with stupid face). And Iknow that the path of a musician is very hard and the worst thing i can imagine for now is that I will get bored by guitar. Tommy is one of the reasons that keeps my faith and inspiration. I would love Tommy to live forever!!

Tommy Emmanuel is one of the best persons in the music industry! Hearing him play or hearing what he says or does always warms my heart! I wish from the bottom of my heart that we have more people like him. He is not just an incredible guitar player but also an incredible person! I love everything about this person and wish Tommy Emmanuel the best! May he be joyful and healthy for many many more years! He is just the best! Words cannot express that.... Tommy if you notice that: I adore you and your work with all my heart, your music and joyfullness touches me deeply and it worms my heart! Tommy's joy just overflows when he plays. It simply cannot be contained and is totally infectious. He is probably the only player that makes me want to sell my electric guitar gear and take up the acoustic. Watching him play always leaves me smiling in awe. Thanks for the great interview.

I think I must have seen Tommy around twenty or so times (starting back in the 80s). In that time, I have had a chance to chat with him at least ten of those times. He used to invite his audience to meet him after shows, and sign stuff for them, or sell his CDs, or just shoot the breeze. He genuinely is the nicest full-time working musician I have ever met - and would chat to you for hours if he had the time. I had the chance to meet his brother Phil (who - as per the video - passed away last year) with Tommy once also, and the same could be said of him. Just your old school amazingly nice kinda family. Cheers Lee for having Tommy on the show - I'm betting you got as much out of it as we did.

Tommy mentions how his dreams "slowly unfolded" - but he's one of those rare birds whose dreams were built upon stunning talent. I finally saw him last year in Charleston, SC (with David Grisman). What I love about this interview is that Lee lets Tommy talk - and Tommy has no useless filler, but start to finish something of value to share of his incredible beginnings, story and encouragement to other musicians. And to think what sacrifices and chance his dad took to get his kids a music career - I mean, that took a lot of courage. And I'm sure a lot of people thought he was crazy. Lastly, when one thinks about how few (primarily) mostly instrumentalist players strike massive success - I mean, you can just about count them on one hand. But an ACOUSTIC guitarist, mostly known for his virtuosity, and yet filling auditoriums all over the world - I mean, how rare and wonderful is THAT???!!!
