Obviously not too many drivers paid attention to this video, I see rear enders almost on a daily basis.. But great video I watched it for the original cars and old scenes, HQs, XAs etc.. I love it!

This film was basically filmed around Mona Vale Rd St Ives near the old Police Motor Cycle Training College. Also shots around the Chatswood and Willoughby areas. Great to hear the late Peter Gywnne as the announcer he had a fine career in Australia as an actor and announcer.

Even though cars today have much more advanced braking systems than these did, these are a good foundation for being safe on the road. Good luck keeping 5 car lengths between you and the car in front on the highway though.

Love these videos - all those wonderful old cars. Especially what appears to be a VG Valiant 2-door Mexicana passing the film convoy right at the end of the clip.

In 2020 I use the Time Lapse Formula : 2 seconds in dry weather and about 5 seconds in the wet. Pure common sense!

That film is called "Drinking, Driving, Surviving". I've seen it available on the NFSA website.

Ah Yes! I've seen that one in school too! From what I remember, the chalk marker was attached to a Valiant. I think that might have been from the series made about 1978.

A great video from the early 70's. The cars are now collectors items. I take note the cars locked their breaks and were stopping on the tyres only, very inefficiency breaking. Its good to look back and in 2012 nothing much has changed with tail gating drivers. The three second rule in the dry allow 4 seconds in the wet, yes current again in 2012.

5:20 to 6:03 is Wakehurst Parkway southbound coming up hill towards Frenchs Forest Rd. HV power transmission towers still there.

I try to keep a safe distance ahead of me in the expressway, but when I do that other cars keep on cutting in front of me. What am I supposed to do, slow down every time that happens to keep the distance?

All of the music in this series was composed by Rory O' Donoghue. He did lots of soundtracks for the Commonwealth Film Unit. Sometimes with his partner Grahame Bond - both of Aunty Jack fame.

The intersection at 6.52 looks like Elizabeth Drive at Mount Pritchard. Some earlier scenes may be Seaforth and Manly. You should post some screen captures to Flickr.

A bit difficult to know at what point the brakes would lock up, though. Hence today's electronic anti-lock brakes & emergency braking assist. Of course, only the former was used (VERY rarely) for mass production back then. IIRC the only car that had anti-lock brakes (mechanical, not electronic) back then was the Jensen FF. Jensen was a small manufacturer from the West Midlands, UK.

If you have people coming over for a holiday from America for instance, they might bring their own car with them, they might not be familiar with our road rules compared to their own. Mind you the same thing applies if you go over there for a holiday and take your own car.

Please give this to the RTA, get them to pomote this, driver today do not do this, i drive a GTS Sports car, i am not a hoon, but drivers today just dont get it.

Actually, Drivers (who drove a lot ) knew how to brake safely.It was called cadence braking and involved stepping on the brake firmly then releasing ,doing that until the car pulled up to a stop. Pretty effective on dirt too.

Locking the tyres up with bias ply tyres is very easy. Bias ply tyres are sensitive to not only how much load is being placed on them, but how quickly they are loaded. This is why older cars that would be equipped from the factory with bias ply tyres have squishy suspension, so that drivers who make jerky, sudden inputs had a safety buffer between them and the tyres to keep them from slipping. Also racing drivers knew very well that locked tyres not only increased tyre wear and temperatures, but that it was worse to use the friction of a slipping tyre against the road than a tyre that wasn't under rotating. I agree that it is criminal that limit braking was not an expected skill to have. The primary purpose for ABS now is to let you maintain your ability to steer in panic stop situations. Radial construction tyres are much less prone to losing traction when shocked by a sudden load, as they can flex more, and flex faster than bias ply tyres could. The point of this demonstration anyways is a panic stop, and many people cannot have the fine motor control of the brake pedal necessary to avoid locking the tyres in a panic stop.

@@bubbleman2002They could be driving on the rims on ice for all I care. The conditions do not matter as long as they remain consistent. The tests these people set up and tried to gain conclusive scientific data from, was using a flawed method to generate that data, which makes the data as useless as any other anecdote out there. ABS has always been about preventing the wheels from locking up. One of the extra benefits of not locking up is having the ability to steer the car, but that's not it's primary purpose.
