@@747-pilot Toyota reliability is waaay overhyped. They have issues like every other car. A few years ago people were crashing and dying because Toyota was using defective accelerator pedals. So let's get our facts straight. "Reliable and durable as the sun that rises every morning" is a stretch. Is Toyota more reliable than Mercedes? Yes. There, I said it. Is Mercedes unreliable poorly-built German trash? Hard no. Only someone with absolutely zero knowledge about cars would be stupid enough to say that. As far as safety, Toyota doesn't even come close to matching Mercedes or any other European brand. European cars have a reputation for being over-engineered and that's true. They have a lot of gizmos that break and cost a lot to fix, but they also engineer the safest cars in the world. If you want safety, it has to be Mercedes or Volvo hands down. And Lexus figured out how to build luxury cars by copying Benz and BMW. Which is great for soccer moms and real estate agents. But for car enthusiasts, Lexus won't cut it. Bye.

I've owned an 06 E500 and currently have a 2013 S550. The 06 began to suffer from the brittle wiring issue and I got rid of it. On the S550 I've had to replace the front air ride for about $1600. These have been great cars. Big, fast, silent. My tip? always look for the last year of a model run. Most things have been perfected and you get a price break if the new model is out on the market.

I bought an '03 lexus ES with 150K for $3400, and dumped far more into it than what I paid; suspension work, timing belt, things that wear out with that mileage. 2 years later, with 230K, it still looks and drives like a new car, minus a tear in the driver seat bolster. It's actually worth more than what I paid for it. The average ask for this car in far worse condition than mine is $4. Can't find any of these in the same condition for sale; there's tons of them on the road, and when I see one, I ask the owner how many miles. Almost always over 250K.

On the E-class you're recomending a car with SBC which is known to go bad 100% of the times over a car that does not have it. If you want a reliable W211 the best option is the E320 gasoline option from 2007-2009. V6 230 hp 0 reliability issues, no SBC, buy it with coventional suspension (not airmatic) and it is a bulletproof car overall. You can go to the 320 cdi but keep in mind these engines will suffer oil leaks from the oil cooler (all of them, 100% of the engines, sooner or later). It is a 10 hour job and if your mechanic is the car wizard, of course you will pay more than the car is worth, but otherwise great engines and great cars.

Just bought a set of Michelins and a new battery. Going to get brakes all around and shooing for another trouble-free 50k.

Thank you for this Mercedes-Benz review! In 2018 I had the opportunity to purchase a 2004 E320 with 126,000 miles on her at a very low price. Before I bought it Mercedes-Benz covered the replacement of the SBC Braking System and the Gas Tank through a Mercedes-Benz extended warranty. In the 5+ years that I've had the car I've had to do some maintenance to it almost every year but the car still drives and handles much better than a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. The Japanese do make very reliable cars but in my experience Mercedes-Benz and BMW automobiles are much more fun and engaging to drive. Thank you for your reviews they are much appreciated!

Wow my 2002 E320 4Matic on has 155,000 and I bought it in 2016 with 140,000 is that young or something?? for a car almost 20 years old or is 150k alot for a 2010?? I get told by mechanics I have a really nice well built mercedes and to stay away from the new ones because they have alot of problems. I've put some money into it for petty issues to be expected after 17+ years of aging and they said its well worth it because the engine is beautiful I'm only the second owner.. The W210s were built sturdy I've hit a deer going 40 and it threw the deer like a bouncy call and left me with a minor scuff when had I hit that deer in my brothers newer benz going the same speed it would have take the bumper off because technically as hard as I ran into the deer it should have F**** my car up.. My girlfriend has a Hyundia and that would have destroyed her front end.. After that day I realized what a tank these frames are for older Mercedes I feel safe in my car plus im surrounded by air bags in a crash which for 2002 was ahead of its time on that feature.

with regards to the pre-facelift e-class they had big problems with the sbc pumps and they are the ones that should be avoided. the later facelift model had essentially none to minimal known problems. the suspension bushes wore out quicker than normal but that's about it. the diesel engines especially the early straight 6 and the later v6 diesels were bulletproof. very well equipped very comfortable and surprisingly good on fuel.

MB extended the warranty of the SBC till 2030. Have there been failures? Absolutely. Have there been braking failures in other autos? Absolutely. The fact of the matter lies with the notion that MB crated a system that wasn't measurable for wear and therefore had to implement a questionable means of using an activation counter limit. In almost all cases one can use a simple diag tool to fetch the current SBC activation count to get an idea of approximate state of the SBC. The v6 diesels have not shown the track record that the inline ones have: the om647 in Sprinters (same as the om648 less a cylinder) have racked up tons of miles- they are workhorses; the v6 engines are swamped with emissions crap. "Bulletproof" is NOT a word that should be used to describe the v6 diesels: if utilized an maintained correctly they are good engines but they're not in the same league as the inline ones.

I owned my W203 for over 3 years and it was really good and reliable car. Its got OM611 220cdi 105kw almost no money spent on engine only maintenance like glow plugs oil ang belt. Only thing that keeps breaking is the motors directing air vents. Its easy fix but takes a bit longer to dismantle the dasboard. Otherwise its really cheap to maintain almot bullet proof. Bigest downside is rust which can be prevented if you choose healthy one to start with. The interior looks dated and maybe cheap but does not creak as much as newer cars.

As a frequent Benz driver/owner/and person who works on my own cars... I own(ed) a 2006 E350 Sedan (W211), so the M272, post-balance shaft issue. Was a great car, cost virtually nothing in repairs (all maintenance.) Ate a brake light switch, got rid of it over fears for the SBC system. Never had an issue, but with 180k on the clock, I was worried about getting enough "presses" that I'd need to figure it out. Quiet and smooth as the day I bought her when I shipped it in 2015. Own a CLK now for the family/summer toy, essentially the same car, sans the SBC and roof. Bulletproof. Wife drives a 2009 ML350. Again, post balance shaft/timing issues on the M272. Only non-maintenance issues were a pair of noisy wheel bearings, the front differential was getting noisy, and the tail light corrosion issue. Swapped the diff (not hard, just annoying), pressed in a pair of wheel bearings, and bought OE taillights. All for less than two months of a car payment. She'll need some suspension work in the near future, but 180k, no major issues. Keep saying "this is our last year", but pandemics, supply chain issues, etc have kept her in service. Doesn't owe me a penny, and runs like it's brand new. No reason to dump it yet. Currently run a 2015 W212 E-350 Wagon. Air suspension issues in the rear (thanks Arnott for making replacement parts), collision sensor issues, trim peeling inside. 75k. Lives in a garage in NY. Doesn't get driven all that much. The major mechanicals (M276/722.9 Trans) are great, but the overall quality of the vehicle has declined. This will most likely be my last Benz; and I've owned many more than the ones listed above. Shame.. Interior design on the new cars feels cheap, screens replacing well designed, durable dashboards. Too much junk plastic, lazy interior designs. Bought the last year W212 on purpose (literally, a few weeks more production on the cars), glad I did. Wife wants a new(er) GLS to replace the ML. I'm 50/50 if I wanna wade in that pool anymore. Maybe I'll be back to Volvo after this car is gone.

To add my two cents, I own a 01 s500. It’s had its fair share of problems but it’s genuinely the best car I’ve ever owned. It’s got amazing speed, comfort, and it’s decently sporty. Can keep up with modern cars, sports or otherwise in both function and speed. But like this wonderful video mentioned, you’ll 100% have issues you never thought would happen due to the electrical components. When I first got my car, shortly after it went into limp mode. I took it to Mercedes and a few other shops who all tried to charge me 6k for a new transmission. Luckily I kept looking around because my now go to shop looked at it for a day and said the transmission just needed to be recoded. Paid 1k and the car drove like new. If you ever get an s class from these years, expect the pse pump(soft close) to go out, at least 1 airbag suspension to go out(1k a corner), ABS light will probably turn on, etc. They just get problems with age. Luckily there is an amazing forum that will always answer you within the day about any problems or questions you have and can probably tell you exactly what you need to do to fix it. If you have the means to, I’d highly recommend an s class from this gen.

Wizard, very good episode. you missed one very bad era for Mercedes, from 2006-2007 and some 08's, of any class 350 engines, there's a list of engine serial numbers available that have balance shaft problems; the shaft gear is made of the wrong material and it wears causing the chain to jump and destroy the engine. The warning sign is a CEL that won't clear and is related to timing. The fix is to pull the engine and change the shaft; about a $5k repair. Keep up the good work.

The E has some minor issues I have to work out but in general the powertrain is rock solid. The ML, despite being an 06, has been very reliable, really only needing little wear and tear things replaced. At 164k miles, we’re very pleased with how that car has lasted. And lastly our GLS, which is so new we can’t really judge the reliability too much, but from what I’ve read they’re very good, new enough to where most of the little things have been worked out.

If you’re looking at the E class, look out for the SBC. The control module has a pre-set number of brake pedal depresses and then the system has to be replaced. In the US they’re under a 25 year warranty, but elsewhere around the world we’re not so lucky. I’ve not had to deal with the one on mine, but do some googling! Apparently when you hit the 300,000 depresses you get a warning on the display and complete brake failure!

@chiefwiggum1976 Жыл бұрын
@@williambrandt9254 it’s Sensotronic brake control. Essentially it’s a smart brake assist. It’s controls the ABS and does clever stuff to work out how much braking force each wheel needs, but you can also put it in “hold” mode which will keep the brakes applied if you’re stationary and “stop” mode which will apply the brakes if you take your foot off the accelerator at less than 30mph. It’s a very clever system, but has a number of faults, which has been a pain in MB’s side

I lived in Germany when I was in the Air Force and bought a new C-230 Sport back in 2004. I picked it up from the factory in Stuttgart. I kept it for around 7 years and had almost no issues at all. The cam shaft adjustment solenoids leak around the o-rings and the plug that connects to the transmission leaks. The solenoids were about $45 bucks each and are held on by 3 bolts. The transmission plug was around $10 bucks and only had one little screw. I always changed my own oil with Mobile 1 and did a drain and fill on the transmission fluid. I had no other issues with it the whole time. I put quite a few miles on it too. We traded it for a for a new C-250 Coupe in 2012 and we still have that car. I also get the base versions without all the upgrades so there is less electronic stuff to break. They are solid cars if you take care of them. I wouldn't trust the new ones as much though.

I almost bought a 60,000-mile 2012 BMW 750i the other day up until the mechanic from the shop literally ran up to me and said to avoid buying that car at all costs. I left the dealer and went to the forums to find out the N63 engine is on a soft recall with the turbochargers and the valve stem seals and BMW refuses to inform their owners. Glad I followed the mechanic's advice. Time to buy an S550!

R129s (SL gen 19-2002) while yes are notorious for hydraulics going wrong really are better than a lot of people think. I have a 95 SL320 and the hydraulics leaked before I bought it and I bought it knowing that I would just have to spend the two minutes manually raising/lowering the top and it’s incredibly simple and no worry with hydraulics needing fixing. The main issue is that Mercedes in their “genius” made the on a few years (up to 1995 or 1996) wiring harness biodegradable. But once that’s replaced (as I’ve done) you won’t really have any problems assuming you’re taking good care of it (and previous owners didn’t just leave it out in the sun neglected for years or whatnot)

The Mercedes that have the 550 (388hp) M273 engine have a lot of issues until June/July of 2008, after those dates they fixed the issues that you mentioned with timing chains and so on and are pretty bulletproof. I have a 2008 December CLS 550 with 260k miles on it - engine runs smooth, doesn't consume oil and is out of any serious issues. The engine has 80 more horsepower than the previous 500 (306hp) M113 engine, and consumes a bit less fuel, which is because of the newer technology of the motor.

TLDR: Get a Benz with an M273 or M272 that was built after the balance shaft sprocket/idle gear fix was implemented. FWIW some late 2007 models actually had the updated M273 installed. Mercedes put out a bulletin listing the last effected engine numbers for both the M273 and M272. Checking the engine number is the only true way to know if your engine has the issue. p.s. As a post-fix M273 owner, I fully agree with your recommendations. Fantastic engine and an absolute joy to work on.
