You don't buy an excursion for gas mileage for sure. True the 5.4 is gutless, but with 300k, a life almost entirely spent on and off oil leases for the last 10 years in 4 different states...that 5.4 2V has given me ZERO trouble, still on the original trans, and 15 avg on the highway. Meanwhile, my buddies that opted for the 7.3 in theirs (and city life) have spent a chunk of change having their trans rebuilt, turbos, etc. If you pull, then yeah, totally agree the 7.3 is the only way to go. But if you are hauling a lot of weight onboard and don't have the need to drive like a dumba$$, the 5.4 2V runs pretty much forever (and fires right up in 10 degrees lol). To each his own but mine has definitely made me far more money than it will ever cost me...

The Gen2 Prius does have one costly quirk: there’s a bladder in the gas tank (designed to reduce emissions) that can collapse over time and limit how much gas you can get in the tank. I can only get about 6 gallons at once in my 2008 Prius (when I should get 11+). The only fix is a complete replacement of the gas tank, which is an $800 part and lots more in labor. So if you are looking to buy a Gen2, find a way to verify it holds a full tank.

Oil changes don't make a noticeable difference in performance, but you'll notice when you have to spring for a new engine prematurely because the bearings are shot and the valves are all fouled to oblivion. It's a lot more critical to change the oil in the TDIs, that's what makes them run forever. Diesel doesn't burn as clean as gas, so deposits build up faster.

My 2016 Corolla S is easy on the wallet. I compute gas mileage at the station with a calculator, and I get 35 in the city and 40 on the road. The computer measuring the fuel economy is optimistic in the city and self-deprecating on the highway. 0-60mph is 10 seconds, which is manageable in all but the most relentless traffic. Interestingly, it seems to be an intelligent drivetrain. When I drive spiritedly for a while, it is more responsive but the mileage drops 1 mpg or 2; when I go back to gramps mode it slowly creeps back up to optimal mileage.

There was huge amounts of money to be made for aftermarket dealers by selling new transmissions for those engines with certain reinforced components cause the failure rate of the stock transmissions were so high. Granted we still can't produce as cheaply as the Saudis, but if they want to play games and turn off their taps, we can now take care of ourselves, it won't be a repeat of the 1970's oil shocks. As the speedometer would move right, the fuel gauge would move left at the same rate. Luckily at the time of ownership, fuel was cheap, around the 1999-2000 year. Really didn't care (at the time) about the mileage. It was an absolutely amazing car. Comfortable and loved the looks of it. Honorable mention for gas guzzler, Lexus IS300. Here's a car that is the size of a Toyota Corolla but its rated at 16 city/22 highway, and "requires" premium fuel. Its a fun car to drive, great handling, RWD, the 2JZ inline six makes decent power and sounds AMAZING, but damn its hard on gas for being a tiny car. I used to have a similar SC300, same 2JZ engine/5 speed manual, that did 18 in town, 23 highway. Mainly though its the cost of premium fuel that ate me out of house and home(.50 to $1 a gallon more), I drove that car pretty hard so I never chanced it with regular.

But I used it for a pizza and Courier car put 100,000 miles on it in one year never had a single mechanical engine problem. strangely it did go through rear wheel bearings for some strange reason but they were cheap so it wasn't a big deal. He's absolutely right on the second gen Priuses they are pretty much tanks, gasoline engines are very reliable much more so than the third generation Prius . one mistake that he made is that the batteries are actually nickel metal hydride in the Prius and actually they still are except in certain trim levels. They still use the same internal modules as they did for the second gen Prius also , so there is a good supply available if you want to repair a battery pack rather than replace it. I've got 338,000 on my 2008 Prius still gives me 45 to 47 average over a tank of fuel.

There are some aftermarket options as well green bean is a pretty well-known one. They come with a lifetime warranty. Batteries tend to last 10 to 15 years. So you kind of got to decide if you plan on keeping the car for a long time it might be better to just buy a brand new battery and have it last. If you're thinking about selling the car in a year or two maybe you're better off repairing or doing something a little less expensive. My 2008 Prius now has 410,000 miles on it. @@ItsMe-ic7on They might have been 10,000 when the car came out. But they are using the same modules inside those batteries since 2004. And in multiple cars. In the Prius there are 28 individual modules stacked together. In the Camry Hybrid it's 32 modules but they're the same module. The current generation Prius also uses them however they have moved to lithium modules I believe now but they're the same form factor and look identical. Age plays a big role and that's the biggest issue now with older Priuses. Even if it doesn't have a lot of miles on it battery eventually does fail. The second gen cars 2004 to 2009 are pretty bulletproof on the engine and transmission. They do have a few weaknesses. 2010 to 2015 you want to try to avoid. They are pretty good till about 200,000 miles. Then they tend to burn oil and blow head gaskets. 2016 and up is the current generation and they seem to be pretty reliable. The 2nd gen Prius is very reliable from every standpoint except the battery. At my dealership we weekly replace the hybrid battery on one generally from 04-07. The 3rd gen is garbage cosmetically but we get much less of those in for battery issues with high miles.

I love my 2000 Insight with a 5 speed manual, the wizard probably would too! 62mpg over the last 250mi, and only $1,500!

I have a 2017 Ford Fiesta SE Hatch with the 5 speed manual, had it since 10 miles, at about 74k now and its been great. 35-37 on flat highways (closer to 34 avg, Colorado) and still about 30 in the city, typically average about 32 overall. Great little car, fun, and been super reliable (1 evap issues, fixed under warranty though, car would take a few cranks to start after filling with gas but never left me stranded!) and from what I have seen the Fiesta ST's can get good mileage too depending on your driving

In the USA there are a number of companies that can sell you reconditioned or remanufacture Prius battery packs and they can change them on your driveway within an hour or so or even you can do it yourself and they a lot cheaper than going to the main dealer and did I mention they come with long term warranties

I remember around 1991 renting a Geo Metro in Miami for a Key West adventure. The little things do get fantastically great mileage. The only downside I remember was having to shut the A/C off when getting onto the highway so that the car could accelerate quick enough.

Avoid the Metro with the automatic - they are slow!
