The Cardboard Bernini examines the work and life of artist James Grashow as he builds a giant cardboard fountain inspired by the work of the famous baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Grashow got the inspiration for this project when he saw some of his sculptures disintegrating in the rain. Although it was deeply painful and shocking for him to see his work like that, it was also surprisingly beautiful. He felt that he was seeing the full arc of his artistic enterprise before him - including its end.
So, Grashow challenged himself to embrace the "backend" of his process, and decided to build a giant cardboard fountain-a Grashow "Bernini". From its conception, he intended this work to be put outside to disintegrate. Work on the fountain began in 2007 and was completed in 2010. This film documents this process from the start to finish.

This film is an intimate glimpse of an artist at work on what he considers his "final epic". We follow Grashow as he asks what is the point of art and creation? What is the connection between creation and destruction? And, ultimately, what is the point of our lives in the face of our mortality?
Grashow’s "corrugated fountain" premiered indoors on June 11, 2010 at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Virginia, to great acclaim. After shows in New York City and Pittsburgh, he finally installed the fountain outdoors at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT on April 1, 2012. It was there for a total of six weeks, after which time Grashow took his degraded cardboard masterpiece to the dumpster: "Ashes to ashes, mush to mush".

Incredible work is the result of unimaginable creativity, hard work and persistence...a lot of sacrifices.. as an artist myself, opposing Jimmy's words, I really don't care about rejection and humiliation, I consider it as a part of constructive criticism. The most important point here is you portray what is in you and what your heart desires...

Amazing, such a fabulous man and wow his art is something else, so inspiring.... I was shocked and laughing at the end and thinking how 😮?? 4 years work, but then I thought well I have nothing to show for all my work, my entire working life I have nothing tangible to show for it so I actually was inspired at the concept of letting go and just doing. Wow, mind blown!!

A tortured soul, yes but a genius, absolutely! It is a shame he has no idea how unbelievable great he is. What a man, I give great tribute to him and his art. I know it will never be forgotten and people will talk of him long after GE is gone! To a great man!!!!

Absolutely beautiful art...I can not understand why his work was not preserved somewhere, the work pieces itselves would have been of service to younger artists. All the work he put into his pieces where worth saving for others, Sacred Art Indeed... ~~~Peace~~~

OK I understand it’s hard to watch but I understand still if it was nearby me I wouldn’t want to begin at night and just steal one of the heads. I want to see is stealing I would’ve thought of it as rescuing but once I saw the pictures of it in the dumpster I understand
