23 years.... 3 different teams.... played against Gretzky in his rookie season, played against Crosby in his one Stanley Cup Final appearance, passed Howe for most games played in the NHL... yet not a single individual trophy or ring to show for that career. However, His ONE record of 1779 NHL games will legitimately never be touched because... JUST TO TIE IT, a newly drafted player would have to first make their team's roster, then play ALL 82 games... for 21.7 STRAIGHT SEASONS (1779/82 rounded), and that assumes they miss ZERO games for sickness, or injury, or personal matters. They should name the "Iron man streak" the "Marleau streak", since Marleau also is top 5 for consecutive games played. How many players in the league right now have even played 20 seasons, let alone 22? His name will never be on the Stanley Cup, but his name SHOULD be remembered for his longevity at the highest level of pro hockey.

What impressed me most about Patrick is he was so maligned for being "unengaged" while young but stayed in the league and was valued as a mentor for young players to demonstrate professionalism late in his career. He mostly played for peanuts late as well.

Watched him his whole career. I do agree with the assessments of him being unengaged. I don't think its as simple as that though. To be as consistent, dedicated, and passionate as him you cant be reckless, so that does bring a different approach to situations. Because of the constant playoff disappointments he always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, having the camera on him when the luck turned so to speak. Looking back, I don't think he was captain material but I don't think they necessarily had a better option either. You cant just hand your "best" player the C, Thornton I paint along the same lines, amazing professionalism and leadership qualities but as far as being that guy to depend on in the key moments I just didn't get that feeling. He belongs in the hall. I think he should go in with Joe, retire both their numbers in San Jose, get a new GM, get some fresh blood on the ice and lets start a new era of Sharks hockey and finish what we started in 2016 to prove to the league it is deserved in teal town.

I was fortunate to meet Patrick in person at a Sharks training camp in the early 2000s. The session was over and he had just stepped off the ice when I asked for a photo. He not only agreed, but he also asked an assistant to take the photo. Then he checked to make sure I was cool with the results. It was so nice of him to do that despite being obviously tired and ready to change and go home. But that’s how the man is: classy and kind.

Marleau adopted Jo Pawvelski, the little, black stray kitty who found her way onto the SAP Center ice in Game 3 of their series with Nashville in 2016, along with another feline friend. He may or may not make the Hockey HOF, but giving Jo and her friend a home puts him in mine.

Mentioned by Sharks President Jonathan Becher at the retirement ceremony this morning, which I attended: Marleau has been on the ice with 37% of all players who've ever played in the NHL, and skated alongside 71% (as I recall) of every player who has ever donned a Sharks jersey. He was not dressed for less than 40 games in his 21 years as a Shark, and has the 5th longest ironman streak (910 games) in NHL history after Yandle, Kessel, Doug Jarvis, and Garry Unger; he was nearing 41 when his streak ended.

Absolutely no. That makes zero friggen sense. Marleau was an average to good/ very good player for a very long time. Nothing he ever did as a player was Hall of Fame caliber. He was incredibly durable and was a compiler.. No Cups. No major awards. He was never considered to be among the best guys of his era in the league, or even at his position. He's around 340th in ppg average, so he wasn't a great scorer. He wasn't known for great defense or even two way play. Great guy. An amazingly durable career, but he doesn't belong in the Hall. If he does get in, he'll get in over several other much more deserving players that have been kept out.

I think the argument that "He didn't win a championship so he's not a Hall of Famer" or that it may hurt his chances is really stupid. Hockey is a team sport it's not one guy doing everything, even the great one didn't win a single Stanley Cup after he got traded to LA. Individual succeses are not always team succceses and the Hall is made up of individuals not teams.

Agree. Given there are now 32 teams in the league, the "not winning" the Cup shouldn't keep someone out. However, I think if there's a borderline player, but was a major factor in a team winning a cup, then that may put that person in. For example. Kessel. Right now, I don't think he's HoF worthy. But, the Pens don't win those two Cups in without him. And arguably he should have won the Conn Smyth the one year. So, when his career is over, depending on how the next few seasons go...if he's borderline, I think those two Cups (and the fact that he was a major part in winning those) may make him HoF worthy in my eyes.

Patrick Marleau was my first ever favorite player when I became a hockey fan. I legitimately cried when I read his piece in the Hockey Tribune and it makes me sad to see him go. I hope the Sharks bring him in in a coaching role because Mr San Jose definitely still has something he can give to the sport. He may not be a player anymore, and I know he will get into the HoF, I just hope he doesn't leave the sport forever

Coming from a leafs fans, from what I've seen he was a major influence on the development of the younger stars. Although Marleau didn't win a cup, he brought so much to the game of hockey that we can't simply measure. He's not one of those players out there for individual achievements or to get paid, he is a team first guy. Anyone who has played with him is lucky.

Our first season with Sharks seasons tickets was 1997 so I had the pleasure of watching those Coach Darryl Sutter teams with Patrick Marleau, Owen Nolan, Brad Stuart, Mike Ricchi etc. It's definitely the end of a Era with Marleau's retirement, see you around town Patrick!

One of my best Marleau memories was back in the Spring of '97 when he was a 17 year old on the Seattle Thunderbirds he put up 12 points in 6 games against my hometown team, the Prince George Cougars, in the WHL Western Finals, The Cougars had both 17 year old Eric Brewer and 19 year old Zdeno Chara on the backend. Seattle won the series but that was when I knew that Marleau was going to be special. I was only 15 years old at the time. I never imagined that six weeks shy of my 41st birthday Patrick Marleau would official retire and Zdeno Chara is still playing!!

Being that good for that long is very special and worthy of the hall of fame, even if you never necessarily “dominate”. He was reliably a top 6 forward for over 20 years, that’s unheard of even for the ‘greats’.

HOF for sure. I know there are a lot of HOF candidates who didn't get in, but I think other people maybe even more deserving than Marleau being robbed doesn't justify him not making it. Absolutely a HOF player for me. I think you can be worthy of it for many different reasons, and whenever there is "most x in history"(and its not something stupid, like most penalty minutes in an 8-2 game before the midseason kind of shit) I think that is a big reason to say yes.

In Marleau's 2nd best season per all-star voting at LW, in 2011, he just barely edged out Patrick Sharp (and actually scored at a lower per game clip than Sharp). So his second best season, powered by Joe Thornton, was Patrick Sharp level. No slight on Patrick Sharp, he was a good player, but that's not HHOF level.

If Marleau gets into the HHOF, all you will hear about it in the future is how he's one of the worst one in there, and how it's undeserved, and "why isn't this other [mediocre] guy in, he's no worse than Marleau". I actually think it will be unnecessarily detrimental to his reputation. No one remembers Dino Ciccarelli, for instance, in a more favorable light because he got into the HHOF. Only thing I hear about Dino nowadays is either "indecent exposure" or "weak HHOFer", not anything about his actual hockey greatness.

BTW, I was reflecting over the weekend on the first time I saw Patrick on the ice (other than a handful of video highlights): at one of the Sharks open rookie camp scrimmages in September 1997, a few days after he'd turned 18. It was immediately obvious that he had an extra gear that no other Sharks prospect had ever shown. He didn't use it all that often during the scrimmage, but when he did, the other prospects might as well have been pylons. I think he had at least three or four breakaways or odd-man rushes. I was taking notes on the players (for myself and others on a mailing list not affiliated with the team), and I think I wrote that if he was willing to use that blazing speed more consistently, he could be an amazing player. His speed reminded me a bit of Marcel Dionne, but Dionne was more about incredible bursts of acceleration than sustained speed: Patty had both. Of course, there are so many other factors required to last for more than a cup of coffee in the NHL: great hands, excellent hockey sense, a willingness to put in the time and effort to reach and continue to perform at a high level, durability, etc. And I've seen a lot of rookies who initially demonstrated a great scoring touch...until NHL goalies figured them out. (For example, in only his sixth NHL game, Alexei Yegorov scored a hat trick for the Sharks, but those were the only goals in his 11-game NHL career.) Patrick showed he had all of the factors above, plus leadership, mentoring skills, and so much more.

To exclude him based on stats such as you mention you would make an argument to remove such players as Kariya, Hawerchuk, Housley, Gartner and Neely. Guys who were consistently good over long periods or derailed by injury but who never won the trophys either. I would however argue that the HOF should create a tiered system to elevate the true greats Gretzky etc above the very goods such as Marleau. It should also be more inclusive of players from outside the NHL as it seems to favour predominantly nhlers.

Marleau is a HOFer. Depending on who's on the ballot when he's eligible, may not be first ballot, but with the games played record, 1,111 points with one franchise, iron-man streak, top 50 in points, top 25 in goals, 2nd all-time in GWG, and was a decent defensive forward, he'll get in. He's also 16th all-time in playoff goals scored, and the Olympic golds should sway voters in that direction. The lack of individual hardware hurts, but the consistency of performance and reliability paired with his legacy with the Sharks golden age should outweigh all of that

500 goals tends to get a player in the Hall. Tkachuk is the guy with the most goals (538) who is eligible but not in. Marleau having 566 makes it a more solid case than say, Joe Mullen (who I do realize probably got in being the first American to top 500).

I decided to cruise by the Shark Tank and see if I could find someone with an extra ticket (they were free for season ticket/ticket pack holders but you had to have a ticket to get in) and got lucky so I was able to be there live for his announcement. Congratulations on an amazing career, Patty! I casually watched games beforehand but got really into hockey during the 2010 playoffs and have so many great memories of watching the teams lead by him, Jumbo, and Pavelski. One of my favorite memories was in the 2013 playoffs where he scored the overtime winner in game 4 to complete the sweep over the Canucks. While Jumbo will always be my favorite player, Mr. Shark is a close second. Enjoy your time with your family and I hope to see you eventually back in the Sharks organization. I will make sure to be there when your jersey goes up in the rafters (which was heavily implied at the press conference...Becher said he had to see next season's schedule before he'd say when the jersey would be retired).

As a Kings fan I'm very familiar with Marleau's exploits as he was a thorn in our sides for years. He was a very worthy adversary and I think he should be a HOF'er. Not in his first year but probably later on. If he'd been more dominant in the playoffs, maybe driving to a Cup then it'd be a no-brainer.

Watching Patrick as a Junior playing for the Seattle T-Birds was always a treat. We had great teams (Kamloops Blazers) in those years and Marleau was always a force to be reckoned with. I feel he had a great NHL career and a real ambassador for the game.

Joe Thornton will definitely get into the Hall. If Marleau does, they will be the 2nd pair of players drafted 1-2 and both go into the Hall. The first was Lafleur/Dionne. I’m sure everyone agrees that Ovechkin/Malkin will be next.

The fact that he played more NHL games than anyone else should be enough to get him into the Hall of Fame. He made it to the NHL at an age that keeps most players in juniors, college or their home country until they're "ready". He stayed in the NHL long past the time most players retire. And from the beginning of his NHL career through to the end, he was an effective player. If having a Stanley Cup ring is the deciding factor as to whether or not a player gets into the HOF, as opposed to the player's entire career, then when is Gilbert Dionne getting inducted?

Then Keith Yandle next. For consecutive games played. Yandle was beyond brutal this year (and the year before with Florida) but Flyers still just kept playing him out of pity to break the "iron man" (lol) streak. Panthers even healthy scratched Yandle last year's playoffs where his "iron man" (lol) streak wouldn't count. When you do it like that, it gets embarrassing. There has to be some actual validity to the whole thing.

It is an interesting HOF debate - if his career was 200 games shorter, I would honestly say no. He's a classic "compiler" - an often good, rarely great player who adds up a lot of stats over a massive number of games played. But because of the fact that he has that games record and was at least a very good player, I would say he is HOF worthy

However a two-time gold medal winner, NHL captain for a decent stretch, few ppg seasons, etc. I think all of those things coupled together will keep him in the conversation. I'm on the fence. Good player, long career, does he make the 5 or 10 rule? Was he one of the 10 best players in the league in at least 5 seasons? No. Was he one of the top-5 forwards in the league in at least 10 seasons? No. Lots of time getting top minutes but not top 10 scoring much, still should get in some day. Other guys are more deserving right now. Todd Gill played a long time at the highest level (NHL), Luke Richardson, so....

I think that he should make it. For me playing that long in the NHL is "fame worthy" in it's self. Add in his points and his goals on top of the international medals and I think you have a HOF player for sure. He defiantly wasn't the best player at anything given point. But I do think a Jack of all master of none kind of player who played almost 1800 games while still being an All-star and top end player in the league (at points in his career) should go in. It is also not like he did nothing while he played 1800 games either. His shooting percentage is 13.1% the same as Iginla (and a lot of other HOF players). With 289 players in the hall at the moment it really is more a question of when does he get into the hall of fame not if his totals are hall of fame worthy Imo.

I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the captaincy being stripped from him. I think he belongs in the Hall but he is just another on a long list of names of great players that simply were not winners.

Forget the number of games played, 566 total goal should be enough to get him the Hall. Totally deserved. And If Lindros got in, I really don’t see how anybody could make a valid argument that Marleau shouldn’t be in.

Eric Lindros basically defined a whole era of hockey. And I'm not even a big Lindros fan, but it's still true. GMs literally started panicking and drafting guys like Mike Rupp and Scott Parker in the 1st round because of Lindros. And on top of that he was an absolute elite player through his peak who delivered by winning the Hart Trophy and dragging his team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Comparing Lindros and Marleau is weird. When Marleau made the SCFs he scored as many points in those playoffs as Joel Ward on a team powered by Burns, Couture, Pavelski and Thornton. Marleau's 2nd best season per all-star voting on LW in 2011 is on par with Patrick Sharp. We're talking night and day here regarding impact, with Lindros and Marleau. Completely different stratospheres of players.

I don’t like him, but I think he should be in the HOF. More so than numbers because of longevity I think what hurts him is was he ever the best player on his team? Between Nolan, Thornton, Pavelski and Burns it’s hard to say he was
