Mark Messier was born in Edmonton, he is a son of Edmonton. Once an Oiler, always an Oiler. Five Stanley Cups as an Oiler. Let’s Go Oilers!
@veritasinvicta8128

As an Islander fan I remember the Oilers with Messier and agree he's an Oiler first and foremost. Ranger fans only have that one cup in 80 years and that's why his Ranger time is so popular.

@@veritasinvicta8128 Aww, poor Islanders fan. Mad because nobody of consequence wants to go play for your team? How many top free agents have they missed out on in the last 10 years? How many are they going to miss out on in the next 10 years? lol

He's an Oiler, but he's also just as much a Ranger if not more so. He won more cups in Edmonton, and yes he was born there, but in New York he was WORSHIPED. In Edmonton, Gretzky always reigned supreme and still does to this day. Yes, they love Messier, but in New York Messier was THE MAN! Even when Gretzky came later to NY, Messier was still Numero Uno!
@amazinmets8439

@@veritasinvicta8128 The biggest and most important Cup in Messier's career came in New York, not Edmonton. His most famous moment came in New York (The Guarantee). Messier also won the Hart Trophy his very first season in New York as league MVP. He was THE MAN in New York, but never in Edmonton. That's why he's more a Ranger than an Oiler despite all his accomplishments there.
@Mebeingcool

Brian Leetch Mark Messier will always be an Edmontonian, born and raised in Edmonton. He is a native son of Edmonton. Wayne Gretzky is our adopted son. Mark Messier was drafted by the Oilers, he won a Conn Smythe Trophy as an Oiler, he won a Hart and Lester B. Pearson award as an Oiler. He captained our Oilers to a Stanley Cup in 1990 without Gretzky. He is an Edmontonian, and an Oiler.

It's interesting that you described Messier's career as solid. I personally think he has had one of the top 3 hockey careers of all time. He has been the winningest player since he came into the league, had a lot of individual success, and is considered a legend in the game. Only a handful of players are in the best career conversation, and that includes Mess, Gretz, Lemieux, Sid, Howe, and Orr
@jordza2k11

I could see Marleau beating all time games (44 behind Howe regular season, 78 behind Messier overall) as if Pittsburgh get into the playoffs itself and those games count the target is so much closer for him, all he has to do is play one more year. Besides him theres maybe Kessel but thats it as the games played record is almost untouchable nowadays with the younger-leaning NHL game of speed and finesse

Despite any controversy, despite the bumps in the road, absolutely my favourite player of that era. I followed him from the Oilers and all their cop runs, through New York to Vancouver and back to New York. And that’s saying a lot, given Gretzky, but Messier was always my guy. Tough as nails, scored a lot of points, a real Iron Man. Absolute legend. His career, as I would put it, is more than pretty good. Thanks for this look back, definitely a nostalgia trip for me. I was an Oilers fan in the 80s, even got to see them play at Maple leaf Gardens in Toronto Mid-80s and that was incredible to see all those guys on the ice at once. I remember going down to the ramp where the players left the ice, and being right there when all the Oilers went past, and it is burned into my memory how awesome it was that they were all right there. Messier, Gretzky, Coffey, Anderson, Kurri, Fuhr...

I was born June 13th 1979. I am a Edmonton oilers fan and a sabres fan since I am from Buffalo. My older brother was looked at in 1979 while playing high School and junior hockey. Fast forward two years. I was two years old and he almost went into the NHL draft. Buffalo and Toronto maple leafs were looking at him. Because we have family in Toronto and at that time story goes we had family working for the maple leafs. 1984 I start playing hockey and my older brother was my skating coach and he would sit behind the bench at my games when he wasn't playing or practicing with his team. Probably for at least ten year's he regretted not going into the draft. It was even hard for him to talk about. He's a defenseman and I am a left winger. Greatest coach I ever had. We still watch the greatest sport of all time.
@revgregory

One of the best things being a Sabres fan ever got me was tickets to a hockey game from a sales rep that I purchased a lot of material from at a job I worked at the time. The company had season box seats at the Garden and he got four of them for me for a Sabres/Rangers game in 2004. It was the next to the last game of the year and the last home game for the Rangers, Messier wanted to retire at the Garden and would not be playing the last game of the season in Washington...so being a Sabres fan is why I saw Messier's last game. Bonus: the Sabres won! We had a great time with some good natured trash talking with the Rangers fans also, very friendly people overall, a great experience. Extra bonus: wings and beer at the Blarney afterward.

Mark Messier and Pavel Bure were the Canucks’ top two stars in the only season they played together for Vancouver (97-98) before Bure held out and got traded to Florida, and Messier had arm issues. Mike Keenan was right to get rid of the Trevor Linden clique, composed of Linden, Gino Odjick, Kirk McLean, Dave Babych, Jyrki Lumme and Martin Gelinas.

Messier meant more to the Rangers than the Oilers. He's loved more in NY.

@@amazinmets8439 Yes, an iconic figure, but Manhattan isn't Canada and among rangers fans he's loved, the only thing is that he was second fiddle in Edmonton, he was the Rangers leader.

So I'm not going to argue the point. I have no problem with Leetch btw, I love the Potvin comparisons and both maybe top 5 defensemen in history.

The most overrated player in History who benefitted from the talent around him. As for dirtiest player? Legendary butt-end at the face-off dot. Yzerman carried The Dead Things on his own until the 90s when the Russians arrived and sacrificed offensive stats for Cups. The ocean if difference is in plain sight, but we keep pretending Mr. Potato Chip is a Hockey God. Let's not forget his time in Vancouver either. The Messier Myth.

Messier led Edmonton to a cup after Gretzky, he also led NYR to a cup before Gretzky. I can see a cupless career for Gretzky without Messier. Another reason my #1 all-timer is Hasek.

@immetal1 I'm aware of team dynamics, but this is long before the roster made millions a piece, and there were no Salary Caps. That Edmonton Team doesn't exist. The Rangers out-spent everyone not named Detroit. Messier is a product of his teams, not his own ability. He carried nothing but his own ego.

@immetal1 Vancouver would say he stole a Dead Man's number, got their beloved Captain Traded, Coach Fired, and then came after them for more money. All hallmarks of being the Greatest Leader ever, right? It's the false narrative that a dorty player on stacked teams is somehow a legend - who hasn't had a hockey job since retiring. Beliveau and Yzerman set standards for Leadership and class, yet Messier is idolized like he is the reason for his teams' successes. He's good at selling chips and cable subscriptions, though.

For me, the worst of Messier was his cheap shot on Linden in Game 6. That's not how winners play. Trevor scored twice in Game 7 and played like a winner. I'll leave it at that.

Canuck fans will never get over this, until they perhaps win a Cup. But moving on... Messier, I think, was the real Michael Jordan of hockey. His style of play, getting involved in all aspects of the game, imposing his will on the ice, on his team, and on his opponents, it was more of a Jordan-esque style of play. Does this make him the GOAT of hockey over Gretzky? Well, that depends on how you measure greatness. Gretzky's real greatness was in making his whole team better, not doing everything better than everyone. And in spite of his selfless nature, he outscores everyone, and wins over the respect of the whole league, right down to his opponents. Messier's greatness in imposing his will on the whole game, but in doing so he comes across as selfish, particularly when he didn't win. And when he did that in Vancouver, well, it is like Michael Jordan going to the Indiana Pacers, and sinking them to the league basement. That cast a huge strike against him, a strike Gretzky never had.

Messier imposed his will like Jordan? I didn’t realize elbowing guys in the face with intent to injure was a staple in Jordan’s play
